It wasn't about just crossing the street like we know it today, it was about crossing the tracks. Most main streets had trolley cars or trains, and people frequently got injured or killed from them. I posted about a similar tunnel crossing in Lorain built for kids going to school.

There are several tunnels that run under the Truman Sports complex. In the 70s we used to explore they are behind Raytown Road where the old Handball courts used to be. And the other one is further up Raytown Road before you would reach Eastern Road by the area where the old Exercise trail used to be. There is a creek that runs behind it and we used to fish the creek and then started exploring the Tunnels. One runs all the way under to the other side of I-70 if I remember correctly. They are stand up tunnels so you can walk through them. And one used to branch off into smaller tunnels and you used to be able to come up where the old Warning track was in Royals stadium but that was before the Remodel. No clue what it's like now.
@thomasharrison69663 жыл бұрын
The NEWS report said that the tunnel was originally made to get to school safely. When the school closed the tunnel became obsolete. Nothing sinister, it just became part of city history. Suggestion...clean it up, put in lighting, cameras, and add it to the walking history tour.

Underground tunnel discovered? Yeah, put chain-link fences over them and they become invisible! Hahahahaha....This story is as special as some of the people commenting. I grew up in Los Angeles and they had pedestrian tunnels all over the city to keep people safe from traffic. They were all eventually fenced-in too because of bad people that did bad things out of public view. I don't know if it's true or not, but somebody once said that there were hidden suction tubes, made to look like air vents, that pulled kids directly to Epstein Island

they should expand the walkways. towns and cities should have raised or tunnel walkways to keep pedestrians and maybe even cyclists safe from car/vehicle/bus/truck traffic trucks should use truck routes that are seperate from roads for cars passenger rail should have its own tracks seperate from freight rail they should take tunnels like these and install moving walkways like youtube shows other countries seem to have everywhere that the us doesnt seem to have at all. there should be bikes scooters and wheel chair stations every so often in the tunnels. and restrooms/rest stations/rest stops periodically. also tunnels like these should be in every town and city as maintenance/access tunnels to be able to replace water mains and power lines and infrastructure out of sight without having to tear up streets.
