Sudden Darkness was an unlucky speed and thrash metal band from the Rhine-Neckar area. The status of “Local Heroes” stuck with them because the LP “Fear Of Reality”, recorded in 1988 for GAMA Records, was not released except for 12 (!) test pressings. The group fell apart, but bassist Guido Holzmann and drummer Neudi continued with a new singer (Axel Schott) and guitarist (Roger Dequis). Instead of letting the career frustration degenerate into even harder music, the new line-up, now with a melodic singer, showed an unbridled creativity that not only resulted in a name change, but also in a new style that pretty much everyone (at the time). ) aspect of heavy metal. In 1993 the debut “New Built Ghetto Status” was released, first as a self-pressed CD, then by Massacre/Intercord, which received very good reviews and also had four-digit sales figures, but on the other hand posed problems for the press and some metal fans. To this day, there is no group that sounds like the Economist, and it is naturally difficult to describe their style. The band themselves called their music “Psycho Metal”, which can at least be said to have a certain proximity to Anacrusis, Damn The Machine, Voivod, but also Black Sabbath and various US metal acts. A second album (“Mind Movies”, 1995) remained unreleased and can be heard in its entirety for the first time on the double CD “ICEFLOWERED - THE COMPLETE WORKS (released by Golden Core in 2021). Today, after 25 to 30 more years of heavy metal history, both records are easier to understand and make the sense that many fans didn't or couldn't recognize back then. Some of Economist's musicians later appeared in notable acts such as Manilla Road, Roxxcalibur, Savage Grace, Century, Viron, Jameson Raid, Still Patient and Trance.
None other than Fenriz from Darkthrone praised Economist's work and called the style "90s Metal Extravaganza", even placing the band above the previous group Sudden Darkness.
The double LP is released in a gatefold and also has a printed four-page booklet. A week before delivery to the pressing plant, guitarist Roger Dequis discovered two sheets of slides containing an unused photo session for the second album “Mind Movies”. Some of these images can now be seen for the first time. Drummer Neudi tells the story of the band on two pages and goes into details about the songs that increase the listening pleasure. Among other things, you learn that all sound effects are handmade - from light bulbs smashed to the beat to the pipes of an industrial air conditioning system...
This double LP is the ultimate tribute to a band that deserved more attention then and now.
