This was so interesting. It is my first time here and I have wanted to discover the original and/or true meaning of words in the Scriptures since my salvation! This “nugget” sparks gratefulness to the Lord and desire to learn more. I’ve just not known how to go about it and it felt overwhelming. Thank you for your teaching 🤗 Those “in Christ” are truly blessed!

I am privileged to have watched this video. Your explanation has cleared the translation inconsistencies of "seed". Now I can theologically wrap my mind around the "seed of Abraham". And I had been wrestling with the last being our tutor, from different commentaries. But you have helped bring it out that Christ is the end point of the law - "into him".and because we are in Christ, and Christ is the seed of Abraham, so we are Abraham's seed as well. The main points of your teaching today are: Christ the seed of Abraham, and that we are Abraham's seed Because we are in Christ.and that the law ends, not simply"with" Christ, but rather "IN CHRIST". THANK YOU Dr. Burling. Patrick Nyeko, Pastor. (Uganda).

Thank you! I shall add a note in my Bible about the seed! I have something too. Not so much Greek nuggets but a couple of things, possible connections, I wondered about sharing please: Firstly Boaz, called Ruth “daughter”. I thought where have I heard that before? Jesus calls the woman daughter who touched his hem in faith to stop her bleeding. I realised that calling her daughter gave her permission to have touched him, and that she was faithfully thinking about the healing in his “wings”, same word as “corners” when considering his Tzitzit, on his prayer shawl. So she believed he was Messiah. This is covering with his mantle. And Ruth requests marriage with Boaz, by asking him to lay his robe over her. All the same picture. Tzitzit are fascinating. You could add in that you say marriage is a type of our future in Christ. Makes a beautiful whole. The other idea was to ask whether there is a connection between the mark of the beast being on the hand (which I understand can mean anywhere from forearm to fingers) and the forehead, as opposed to the Israelites being asked to bind the Torah to their heads and forearms, and so they wear phylacteries. So that is good, and the Mark will be a bad copy? I thought it interesting that the two locations on the body were the same?

Of the Christians I have heard compare the seal of God (Revelation 7:3 & 11; chapter 9 verse 4) and the mark of the beast (Revelation 13 & 14), most or all of the have failed to mention something that has occurred to me, namely, that while the mark of the beast is said to be received in the forehead or the hand (which I take to mean by what people do or what actions they approve - maybe even tacitly), the seal is said to be received in the forehead (not the hand). Could this difference between the seal and the mark be a reference to the fact that all false religious systems are about what people do while trusting the creator is about receiving his grace through faith alone?

Very informative video ! I do think that it should be pointed out that according to Galatians that faith alone saves no one. It is faith plus obedience ro the plan of salvation the results in our being saved. As Galations 3:27 states that " as many has been baptized unto Christ have put on Christ" It is believing into ( eis) Christ that results in our salvation. As Peter said in Acts ch 3 " God gives the Holy Spirit to those who obey him". Being baptized into ( eis) Christ involves water and Spirit baptism. These are two parts of one baptism essential for our salvation.

Hey Darryl, great video/study and great insight from the Greek text of Galatians 3. I sometimes wonder why so many people who study the Greek NT elevate the NASB and the ESV and put down the NIV which is being worked on by some of the top Greek and NT scholars, like Doug Moo (whom you quoted in the video) and Bill Mounce. Anyhow, the NIV does a great job of translating the Greek and preserving the insight you shared here from the Greek. NIV Galatians 3:16, The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ. And NIV Galatians 3:29, If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Many great edits and improvements like this were made in the last revision of the NIV thanks to the Greek scholars like Mounce, Moo and Daniel Wallace who worked on the text and tried to preserve some of these things that can only be seen in the Greek with some of the other English translations.

Thanks Ken for your thoughtful comments. The challenge is not so much whether any translation gets it right, but knowing which one does and when. This is why reading in the original is so helpful. Thanks for watching!

Matthew 5:17-19 : “Do not think that I have come to do away with the Law and the Prophets. I haven’t come to do away with them but to fulfill them (meaning of fulfill/make full : grant it the power to give people eternal life by covering our transgressions with his shed blood as long as we repent and do our best to sin no more, grace is not a license for sin or disobedience). For i say to you truly, till the heaven and earth pass away, neither the smallest letter nor even the smallest stroke of a pen will be erased from the Law until everything there becomes a reality. Therefore, whoever ignores one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do the same will be called the lowest in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever keeps these commands and teaches people to keep them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” Luke 16:17 : “It’s easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for the smallest stroke of a pen in the Law to drop out.” John 14:15,21 : “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them loves me. Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.” Matthew 19:16-19 : “And see, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good shall I do to have everlasting life?” And He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except One, Alahim (God). But if you wish to enter into life, keep the commands.” He said to Him, “Which?” And Yahusha said, “Don’t commit murder. Don’t commit adultery. Don’t steal. Don’t give false testimony. Honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as you love yourself.” (Quoting from the 10 Commandments and Torah) Matthew 7:21-23 : “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Master, Master,’ shall enter into the reign of the heavens, but he who is doing the desire of My Father in the heavens. Many shall say to Me in that day, ‘Master, Master, have we not prophesied in Your Name, and cast out demons in Your Name, and done many mighty works in Your Name?’ And then I shall declare to them, ‘I never knew you, depart from Me, you who work lawlessness!’ John 3:36 : “He who believes in the Son possesses everlasting life, but he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.” Matthew 13:41 : “The Son of Adam shall send out His angels, and they shall gather out of His reign all the stumbling-blocks, and those doing lawlessness.” Romans 2:13 : “For not the hearers of the Law are righteous in the sight of God, but the doers of the Law shall be declared right.” Hebrews 4:9-13 : “So you see that a sabbath rest is left open for God’s people. The one who entered God’s rest also rested from his works, just as God rested from his own. Therefore, let’s make every effort to enter that rest so that no one will fall by following the same example of disobedience, because God’s word is living, active, and sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates to the point that it separates the soul from the spirit and the joints from the marrow. It’s able to judge the heart’s thoughts and intentions. No creature is hidden from it, but rather everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of the One to whom we have to give an answer.” James 1:22-25 : “You must be doers of the Word and not only hearers who mislead themselves. Those who hear but don’t do the Word are like those who look at their faces in the mirror, for they look at themselves, walk away, and immediately forget what they were like. But they who study the perfect Law, that of freedom, and continue in it, not becoming hearers that forget but doers of work, they shall be blessed in their doing of the Law.” James 2:14-26 : “My brothers, what use is it for anyone to say he has belief but does not have works? This belief is unable to save him. And if a brother or sister is naked and in need of daily food, but one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” but you do not give them the bodily needs, what use is it? So also belief, if it does not have works, is in itself dead. But someone might say, “You have belief, and I have works.” Show me your belief without your works, and I shall show you my belief by my works. You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe - and shudder! But do you wish to know, O foolish man, that the belief without the works is dead? Was not Abraham our father declared right by works when he offered Isac his son on the slaughter-place? Do you see that the belief was working with his works, and by the works the belief was perfected? And the Scripture was filled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him for righteousness.” And He called him, “he who loves God.” You see, then, that a man is declared right by works, and not by belief alone. In the same way, was not Rahab the whore also declared right by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so also the belief is dead without the works.” 1 John 2:3-7 : And by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commands. The one who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever guards His Word, truly the love of God has been perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. The one who says he stays in Him ought himself also to walk, even as He walked. Beloved, I write no fresh command to you, but an old command which you have had from the beginning. The old command is the Word which you heard from the beginning.” 1 John 3:4 : “Everyone doing sin also breaks the Law, for sin is lawlessness.” 1 John 5:3 : “For this is the love for God, that we keep His commands, and His commands are not heavy.” 2 John 1:6 : “And this is the love, that we walk according to His commands. This is the command, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.” Revelation 12:17 : “And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to fight with the remnant of her seed, those guarding the commands of God and possessing the witness of Yahusha the Messiah.” Revelation 14:12 : “Here is the endurance of the saints, here are those guarding the commands of God and the belief of Yahusha.” Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 : “Let us hear the conclusion of the entire matter: Fear God and guard His commands, for this applies to all mankind! For God shall bring every work into right-judgement, including all that is hidden, whether good or whether evil.” 1 John 2:17 : “And the world passes away, and the lust of it, but the one doing the desire of God remains forever.” Revelation 22:12-14 “And see, I am coming speedily, and My reward is with Me, to give to each according to his work. I am the ‘Aleph’ and the ‘Taw’, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last. Blessed are those doing His commands, so that the authority shall be theirs unto the tree of life, and to enter through the gates into the city.” Romans 16:24-27 : “The favour of our Master Yahusha the Messiah be with you all. Amen. And to Him who is able to establish you according to my Good News and the preaching of Yahusha the Messiah, according to the revelation of the secret which was kept silent since times of old, but now has been made manifest, and by the prophetic Scriptures has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the everlasting God, for belief-obedience. To Alahim (God), wise alone, be the esteem, through Yahusha the Messiah forever. Amen.”

It is important to keep in mind when studying Pauls' letters that they all begin with,"..to the saints of..". These are already saved christians not evangelistic letters to win souls to Christ but furthers instructions in the faith to already saved christians. The last record we have of Paul leading people to Christ is in Acts ch.19 where it readily becomes apparent that unless a believer puts what they have come to believe in action through obedience God counts their disobedience as unbelief. Paul preached the same plan of salvation as Peter did in Acts 2:38. He taught " obedience unto righteousness" (Rom.6:16)

... I very much love & appreciate this wonderful revelatory scholarship ... yes, I've often thought of the Christian experience as 'panning for gold' ... you have to sluice out the sluggish to have the nuggets appear ... Translations do not have true intent, they are deliberately watered down to present a kind of 'gruel' of the Word, rather than a true healthy porridge ... we are as babe's when we are new in Christ ... we deserve the best porridge ... does the seed principle also extend into our future Life in Christ, in the Kingdom of Heaven & in the work to be accomplished in the Thousand Year period, as we take a hiatus from Hell on Earth & begin the process of spiritual terra-forming & our destiny & duties in the star's will be our 'forever Home' & Purpose ...& we will have Divine Purpose in Righteousness in the Universe, as evil is vanquished ... Forever & Ever ... Amen

Thank you so much for this wonderful video! If I might make one suggestion? My brain works quickly regarding languages so I usually increase the speed of videos. I listen quickly 😘 I guess one could say. However, I found it necessary to reduce the speed of this one to 75%, rather than my usual double speed. I understand you wish to get as much into the video as possible, but if it does not get into the brain with understanding, it is not as useful. I did learn to read Koinon, well somewhat "learned" but totally self taught so my reading is not always perfect. Nevertheless, I have gotten so much more from the original language and I appreciate your help. I will subscribe, thank you. The way I try to explain the difference between the Koinon and English is that they basically say the same thing BUT, it is like the difference in a chapter summary and a detailed reading. They say the same thing, but the deeper reading is so much more detailed! Well worth the effort to learn, if anyone wonders about that.

Disclaimer: I have no college degrees, I’ve never taken classes in Hebrew or Greek and I’ve never attended seminary classes. Most of what I know (or think I know) about Hebrew and Greek has been gleaned from my Strong’s Concordance. In the United States, many professed Christians subscribe to theological systems they think are based on “literal” interpretation of the Bible but that fail to take certain Bible passages literally. Do you think that may be because they think of the word, “literal” as being antithetical to “spiritual” and because they take the word, “spiritual”, to mean, “unreal”, “non-existent”, “ethereal”? Another way of thinking about the meaning of the word, “spiritual” (especially as used in the Bible), is that spiritual realities are more real than physical realities because spiritual realities are eternal while physical realities are temporary. After his resurrection, Jesus had a spiritual body but he was just as real as you are. If you are Christ’s, are you the seed of Abraham? (Galatians 3:29) If you are Christ’s, do the promises to Abraham and Israel (Jacob) and the prophecies about Israel pertain to you? Or are you the seed of Abraham only in some “spiritual” sense - meaning not really? While we are thinking about that, shall we also think about this? -- What about the Hebrews? If the only non-Hebrews who are children of Abraham are those who have the faith of Abraham, is it also true that the only Hebrews who are children of Abraham are those who have the faith of Abraham? Jesus didn’t come to Earth to destroy or replace the faith of the Hebrew patriarchs and prophets of antiquity. Instead, he taught that some of the rabbinic traditions had obscured the real meaning of the writings of Moses and other Hebrew prophets. APPENDIX Additional Bible passages that corroborate the statement in Galatians 3:29 - And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Romans 4:13 - For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. Galatians 3:9 - So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. 13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

Thanks for this video. What's often missed in this passage is the key phrase "the blessing of Abraham". Paul says that Christi died so that the "blessing of Abraham" might come upon the Gentiles. "The blessing of Abraham" is the inheritance of the land. Christ is the Seed that inherits the land and by being in Christ Christisns too will inherit the land. The only other place "the blessing of Abraham" is mentioned is in Genesis 28:4. Genesis 28:3-4 (LES2): 3 May my God bless you, and may he increase you, and may he multiply you, and you will become a gathering of nations, 4 and may he give you the blessing of Abraham your father, to you and to your offspring after you to inherit the land of your sojourning, which God has given to Abraham.” "The blessing of Abraham" is the land in which he sojourned.. we see this prophesied by David. Psalm 2:6-8 (LES2): “But I was appointed by him in Mount Zion, his holy place, 7 announcing the ordinance of the Lord. The Lord said to me, ‘You are my son; today I have fathered you. 8 Ask from me, and I will give to you the nations as your inheritance, and as your possession the ends of the earth. Christ's inheritance is the nation's and the ends of the land. By being in Christ Christians also inherit the land. Paul ends the chapter by saying if you are Abraham's seed, you are heirs according to the promise. The promise is the land.

Seed has been in the margins of the NASB since at least the 95 version for Gal 3:29... I know you are biased toward the Reformed wing (and are likely against the NPP being a Macarthurite) but you should be crediting James Dunn with what you found in Moo's commentary or perhaps someone earlier as Dunn positied this exact same exegesis/hermeneutic a full 20 years before (published dates) and perhaps much further back when you take into account Dunn's articles from the 80s on this topic...

Omni Theus Just curious - why do you say Dr. Burling is reformed or agrees with MacArthur? I've been listening to this channel for about two and a half years and I've never heard him indicate that he was reformed nor that he agrees with John MacArthur. I know lots of people who've attended the Master's Seminary who don't agree with MacArthur on many things. In fact many of the professors there differ greatly with MacArthur on key issues and are not reformed. Many many Christians actually think for ourselves, study the Bible, listen to teaching, and eventually come to our own conclusions on each issue after we have studied over many years. We don't just pick a teacher or a school or a tradition such as reformed and then follow whatever that tradition or teacher says. In fact, that's one of the benefits of being able to read the Bible for ourselves in our own language - and better yet in the original languages.

All saving faith is predicated on the success of Christ's saving work on behalf of those He came to redeem. True saving faith flows out of the finished work of the Lord Jesus. As all men sinned and fell in Adam so too all those who are saved were saved in Jesus Christ our federal head and representative. Adam was the federal head of fallen humanity and Jesus is the federal head of all his people. Too many bypass the federal headship of Christ in whom and by whom we are saved. The faith any true child of God possess is that which God dispenses into the souls of all who Christ came to seek and save. Faith is a fruit of the new birth without which no one can exercise true repentance and and obedient from the heart.

“The Law” being spoken of here in Galatians 3 by Paul is THE TALMUDIC LAWS…THE TRADITIONS OF MEN.. which were a BURDEN being imposed upon the new believers in YaHshua..by the Rabbinical Jews, to those who had just come out of “RABBINICAL JUDAISM”… to follow YaHshua.. THIS IS THE LAW THAT PAUL IS SPEAKING OF.. AND NOT THE TORAH LAW AND COMMANDMENTS.. WHICH EVEN PAUL SAYS WE MUST KEEP..
@MandMe91

The "traditions of men" didn't come with a curse attached. When Paul said "christ has redeemed US from the curse of the law" its the curse of transgressing Torah. BTW..you were never under any of the laws and you are not redeemed from the curse of anything.

One HUGE problem The law was only given to Israel and has not existed for nearly 2,000 years. No one alive today was born "under the law" and no one alive today is redeemed from its curse. Three questions: Were you ever part of the Old Covenant that Moses mediated? Were you born subject to the Mosaic law? Did Christ redeem you from the curse of the law? Correct answers: No No Impossible How was the law that hasn't existed for nearly 2,000 years your "tudor"? Answer: It wasn't. How did a law that you were never under "curse you"? Answer: It didn't How did Christ redeem you from a curse of a law you were never under? Answer: He didnt

That is why we need the Holy Spirit to teach us, then the "huge problem" disappear. Yes the law was given to Israel alone but why. Once again we have to go back to the beginning, the fall of Adam where he chose to believe satan's lies and reject God's word, got separated from God, spirit "died", fallen into satan's bondage, beginning of death etc. As descendants of Adam, everybody is born in this fallen state, born into bondage, born to live in satan's nature (the true meaning of sin). Then God decided to create a holy nation out of which he could send the Saviour. To get fallen people to stop living in satan's nature, God had to give them guidance, rules to live by that reflects God's nature since fallen man can't be like God, holy by themselves. The written law thus reflects God's nature, the written law also became a curse because fallen man can't naturally live in God's nature therefore it continuesly serve to convict them. What did Jesus do? Jesus in flesh was a *manifestation* of Yehovah *representing fallen Adam,* not God, to restore what Adam has lost. When Jesus died without sin (the opposite of Adam who sinned and brought death to the world), he defeated satan and the claim satan has on all of Adam's descendants, redeeming all those who believe on him from satan's bondage, allowing Him to resurrect our spirit which connect us with His Spirit again. This is why Jesus said he didn't come to abolish the law but to fulfill it, since God's Spirit can now reside in us, changing us back into His image and likeness, we can now live in God's nature automatically, no need for the written law anymore, no desire to sin, a new creation, restored to what God created us to be, one with Him. Now tell me again Jesus did nothing...

Thanks for your comments. Assuming everything you say is true, much of the New Testament is not relevant for Christians. Also, having argued we were not born under the law, what were we born under that Christ delivers us from and what relevance would you say Galatians 3 has for Christians? I look forward to your thoughtful response.

@@bma I'm not arguing that we were not born under the law...that is a fact. The law was imbedded in the old covenant. The bible is a story about old Covenant Israel under law and their redemption from that law and it's curse through a new covenant of grace. The New Covenant redemption was from old covenant transgressions. Says so in Heb 9:15. Christ was the final sacrifice in a sacrificial system that we had nothing to do with. You and I have never transgressed the law so, according to Rmns 5:13, the bad things we do are not imputed. Did Christ redeem you from the curse of the law?

@@bma Galatians 3 was written to scattered Israelites. Paul told them that they were kept under the law until Christ came. That's Israelites. Peter wrote to the diaspora (dispersed Israelites) and said that they were in Galatia

Great message and as you know, IT'S VITAL to bring the weak and misleading English translation back to the original language intentions INTO modern false biblical teachings such as zionism. But i want to say please slow down so that you can help mislead people to understand, you are preaching way to fast for them.

It appears that many can create interpretations from scripture to suit a political position. It’s absolutely disappointing.

Yes, faith and baptism are important for salvation. Nope, Paul did not believe the calvinist idea of Christ´s imputed righteousness to the believer, we will be not judged according to Christ´s works, but according to our works. According to Paul we must do certain things and avoid others to inherit God´s Kingdom, to receive final salvation just like Jesus teaches: One text that I love about Galatians is Galatians 6:8-10: "Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers". So according to Paul final salvation is not by faith alone, quite the contrary, we must not become weary in doing good so that we can reap eternal life which proves that Romans 2:6-7 and 10 are not hypothetical, they are true for all Christians, we must do good works to receive final salvation: Romans 2: 6 God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality, he will give eternal life. 8 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile". Yes, both Galatians 6:8-10 just like Romans 2:6-7.10 reject the idea that final salvation is by faith alone. Blessed be God different protestant New Testament scholars have noticed this and are following only what the Greek text says. May Jesus bless you more.
