Actually the lighter thing is something I’ve been doing for years working as security at a hospital that deals mainly with psychiatric patients. I don’t even smoke, but always carry a lighter. Getting a patient a cigarette that’s been basically forced to be at a hospital against their will has prevented me from going hands on so many times. At one point I even kept a pack of cigarettes in my backpack just to have one for those occasions.

I am retired as a corrections officer and the grandchildren found me another job as a medical transport officer .if you ever wanted to know who went into surgery with state prison inmates that was my job till I retired again . My choice of weapons was something lightweight the Smith and Wesson 642 .

Probably the most useful EDC video I've seen. Implemented several of these things not because Fred looks like he could "get rowdy" and make someone into a pretzel (he does), but because it makes sense how he put it. One thing that I thought about when he said "take a core sample" about bouncing a flashlight bezel off someone's dome, was, you could also put that you are taking a biopsy of their head... violently.

I have a SAK for utility purposes, and sometimes some foldable or my CRKT Bear Claw for the "other stuff" for the same reasons, and with no clips showing if possible.

Nobody sane is carrying an offensive, non-utility fixed-blade knife purely for self-defense. unless they are either paranoid or delusional. A polymer or metal handle knife will do the same thing when coated with liquid. Add some paracord, add some stippling, add some ridges. Anything to add surface area and create friction and grip. Material doesn’t matter

I appreciate how straight to the point this is and think it's good advice. I agree with carrying all of these items daily and do so myself, with the suggestion of one more item to have on your person - a pen. A twist action metal frame pen to be precise. 1)because you'd be surprised how often you or someone you're around needs a pen to write with and 2) a metal frame pen can also be used as a weapon in a pinch.

Fred done a Great job detailing the items on the table. He detailed the functions of flashlight, and each knife in depth to why he'd use a specific style of knife in certain situations that might occur. I have a great understanding on what knife to use and which style of knife to stay away from for my own safety in use when defending myself. Great knowledge on the lip groove of the flashlight.

Thanks for the advice on the knives and presenting the tactical advantage of a flashlight to defuse a situation. So many people that have never experienced real violence are always looking for a fight, but they just don't know.

I would not say that civilians walking around armed with pistols and knives are necessarily looking for trouble, but experience has taught me that this particular kind of trouble finds such people at a much greater rate than your average person who will often simply choose to just walk away before it becomes a situation. We're not talking about random muggings or getting jumped on the street here. I know there was lip service to diffusing the situation and using your words, but don't these scenarios sound much more like two douchebags sticking their chests out in a bar, or one guy deciding, "No. I will not excuse you."? THAT you can almost always avoid without being armed. But my experience has been that the people who are armed with "ways to diffuse the situation" often are just about as responsible for the situation getting to the point where it has to be diffused in the first place. In all that time I have never encountered a confrontational situation, let alone one that required me to pull my weapon or raise my fists. Just because we carry weapons does not mean that we are looking to use them, and also does not mean we are more likely than anyone else to cause or wind up in situations where we are forced to use them. @@je2848 Let's see ... I never wrote that people carrying weapons are looking to use them, so no points there. I would point out that, by definition, you are more likely to end up in situations where you are "forced" to use them simply by virtue of having them to begin with. The point I actually address is situations escalating or continuing for no real reason other than the fact that armed participants are more likely to be emboldened to refuse to spit the bit and allow things to die down. It's no different than a larger person digging in more often when facing a much smaller person. It's just parlaying a perceived power advantage. In transforms the interaction. I base that on anecdotal evidence from several friends who have been in law enforcement for decades, personal experience and how human nature has expressed itself going back thousands of years. Good video. Agree on center line fixed blade. I HIGHLY recommend OC Spray. 29 year retired LEO and used OC to good effect much, much more than handgun or knife (which was never-defense wise). As a civilian now it can keep you out of serious legal trouble.

Just be aware of how to use it and the wind conditions if you do have to pull it. If you don't know what you're doing or the wind blows wrong it could wind up disabling you instead.

I'm no secret knife ninja, and even the knife ninjas that i have met always tell you one thing about knife fights: run! So i have mostly ditched blades in favor of multitools that i actually can use all the time, and pepperspray. Can be a less lethal before you go to your gun, or give you enough time to run or fix your gun. Knife fights just simply aren't fun, because there are barely any winners, just everybody looses.

All the EDC updates I've seen and it still blows my mind that mace/oc spray is hardly in anyone's system. It's the perfect in-between for someone hostile that hasn't presented themselves to be a deadly threat. For example, there's no way I'd ever use lethal force on an homeless elderly individual that has decided to start spitting and chucking rocks at random people passing by them on the street due to a mental episode. Mace/oc spray is a great option to visually impair and disable those kinds of individuals until officers arrive on scene. I'm sure it'd be great against an aggressive dog as well. So many options that lowers the chance of having to pull a gun, use it, and deal with the headache afterwards.

OC spray does not work well. People just eat it, especially if they are drunk or on drugs. The spray will effect you as well. The stuff is a mess. None of my partners carry it at work. OC spray is better than nothing I suppose, but I would not recommend it. -source state trooper.

@@TaylorS89 I can see officers being less lilely to use it because the chances of them going hands on and getting oc spray all over their person(making their job more difficult) is a lot higher than your average citizen/sheep dog. For the average citizen I'd say it's extremely benificial because your average citizen isn't necessarily looking to go hands on and detain the subject. Average citizen is just looking to disable, stay away at a safe distance, and call the proper authorities who are payed and trained to handle those kinds of hostile situations.

I like what you said. Voice of experience. I have a Benchmade Contego that I carry, along with a fixed blade. I like around a 4-inch blade because I have learned most of my scuffles have ended up with close contact and anything longer just gets in the way. I will keep an eye on my Contego in the future.

Seriously, thank you for this video. I was able to show my wife and kids and they had a clearer understanding of what they should have and why. better to be prepared and not need it than the other. Again, thank you, this video is by far one of the smartest and clearest explanation of EDC that I have ever seen. One question, I have is that other than the gun wouldnt seeing a clip maybe be a deterrent ? I ask as a person who is wondering what you see as someone who is much more seasoned as I am. One thing I wished he would have covered, asking someone for a light, a cigarette, directions, or anything is one of the oldest “tricks” criminals use to roll people. They ask you for a light, taking down your guard, and you may take your eyes off of them for a moment and that’s when they attack you. I always answer no to any of these questions, or I’m not from this area or whatever gets them to move along. Idk, just one more thing to consider.

I don't think there is anything wrong with open carrying a general knife- like a Benchmade bugout, not a kbar or something huge. Most people won't notice and in my opinion most who do are the type to also carry and understand how useful it is. I've never once seen someone else with one and thought 'danger'... More like, 'prepared'. Not sure why this video suggests something different. Then again I've never much cared if someone misjudges me based on appearance (like my tats or whatever). That's on them, not me.

I like this. My whole purpose is to never have to fire my firearm at someone. If they see it and run away I'm content with that outcome. Sometimes it seems some people out there are too trigger ready and want something to happen and have a reason to fire it. I honestly do not want to deal with the post traumatic stress afterwards of potentially ending someone elses life.

Pocket knives, specifically folders are so common place these days. I don't really give it any thought when I see anyone with clips showing outside their pocket, especially since both my light and knife have pocket clips.

Not even use, but just brandishing it is an offense unless you can prove your life was in danger. That goes for knives too. You don't want to be considering this stuff in the middle of a situation so study up on your state's rules well in advance!

Two things I would say on points you developed. One of the most valuable statements you made in this video I was about making sure that you have a light that was not mounted on your firearm. There are many uses for a light that don’t have anything to do with pointing a gun at something, and once that gun is out of your waistband the situation has changed drastically. So you definitely want to have a primary light and then let the light on your gun be a secondary light. By the same token I think everybody should carry a secondary knife. For me that secondary knife is a slip joint… In my case a Swiss Army knife that I use for daily things like boxes or maybe peeling an apple. There are a lot of reasons why you might need to use a knife and a little folder is a lot less scary to the sheeple than a fixed blade. So I recommend any type of fixed knife should stay concealed as well, especially since they’re not legal in some jurisdictions.

having grown up in an relatively violent region, i appreciate the de-escalation point, it is the best approach. I would personally disagree with the knives being useful tools because when you are trying to get out of a situation having a tool that requires going in and causing serious damage as a method of disengaging is not wise IMO (in the heat of the moment, the person attacking you will likely ignore any cuts unless they are serious which i prefer to avoid... most of my confrontations have been with people who were drunk or temporarily, for the lack of a better word, insane out of anger/under influence and I have been fortunate enough to have diffused the situations without the use of any tool and I always had blunt tools which cause more shock than damage). This is just based on my personal experience and logic, it has been years since someone tried to harm me and is region dependent. This is a very descriptive video.. no glorification or underplaying. I live in the US for now and in an area where I have fortunately never been confronted with violence and just use my blades as pry tools or for opening boxes lol. Never carry one out of the house...

Great advice! But I will just say to anyone, whatever you carry or decide to carry train with and know how to use what you carry. A small caliber weapon may or may not put an individual down. But correct shot placement will. This goes for knives as well. Correct placement will buckle anyone if you know what you're doing and it is used correctly no matter who are how big an aggressor may be. Consistent training and practice is the real key. Practice practice practice!!

I live in Pennsylvania, and I have found that carrying a lighter also helps when your locks (car, house, etc.) are stuck, taking the key and heating it with your lighter is very effective. I'd an attacker were to try to choke you, use the lighter and utilize it on his/hee elbow.

Great video thank you for sharing your experienced view. Ive fought a few knives in the street over the many years. (No more).. one Had my index finger palm side fileted by a spyderco serrated blade, ugly fight. Stopping and stomping him still meant pain, blood, and weeks for healing. Cut many nerves and they don't heal.. My training was you hafta accept your going to get cut if you must fight against a knife and you better have a plan! I carry both fixed and folder. One for boxes and one for bad people. Keep them videos coming!

I've had a good amount of people mistake my flashlight for a knife just cuz of the clip and the form factor when it sits in my pocket, so that part is definitely understandable. But I think having a pocket knife is pretty commonplace these days so most people wont take too much note of it.

In my opinion pens & paper are a waste of space & everybody send to copy this from one another. Got a cell phone? You can take more notes on that phone than you can with that pen. You can also duplicate your notes & send them to others far easier. You can even record your notes if you want, with video or audio or type them up. So the phone is far superior than wasting your space with a pen & paper.

@@ClickClack_Bam Cellphones are great......until battery dies. What happens when you are in area with no cell service? Hard to leave a note on dead cellphone at a location saying which direction you went in with time and date for others to use and track you if you lost in mountains of Colorado etc. I spent 8 plus years in Marines in the Infantry and we always carried a pen and paper. We weren't allowed to carry Cellphones not issued to us. I'm not knocking what you are saying. I have been trained and programmed to always carry pen. Easy to write down license plate or details of person on back of my hand etc. And it's also a quick weapon in a pinch. Ask Jason Bourne.

Both solid additions, but I think the entire point here was EDC gear to be used in a defensive situation. And @Breakneck, there's times when your cell phone can't do what you need it to, even on a full battery with full service. If you need to leave a note for someone(because you hit a stranger's car, or you're tagging a casualty in a medical-response situation, or you're re-delivering a misplaced Amazon box, etc), your cell phone is not particularly useful. Pen and paper is absolutely valuable EDC gear.

No people are stupid and get mad over everything these days and when people get mad they do stupid things. A road rage incident would be a great time for pepper spray if you have to for some reason. Or any time really. Not everyone is a deadly threat the just need to be doused in the face for good time with some good ole OC spray.

I currently carry 2 different flashlights (one on either hip-ish), two 3.25" folders (both Kershaw and on either hip-ish) (as far as thinking about them, I just always thought I'd have more room to deploy. In NJ I only carry my knife when I’m hiking on a trail… since the stipulation is only to have a knife for legal usage… I’m just glad Supreme Court made their recent ruling for ccw. Other than that my edc is pepper spray and a sure fire flashlight to stay within local laws.

I love the philosophy of wanting to hide your everyday blade. I really don't meet people who carry a pocket knife that don't own/ want to own guns. They may not always go hand in hand but I like the idea of concealing your own blade.

I've always preferred fixed blades to folders, cause I'm nervouse of something breaking on impact and it folding over on my fingers like you pointed out, and I just think they're more reliable. Pretty easy to avoid a blade closing on your fingers if you exercise proper knife handling. Also, don’t stab stuff with your pocket knife, it’s a cutting tool, not a stabbing tool.

Although I do carry a sidearm and spare ammo, that's not the whole reason I carry EDC items. I carry EDC items just for convenience, things I like to have on me at all times just in case. Things like OTC medication , a small flashlight, a multitool and pocket knife, a couple pens and a notebook and some other things. I always wear a multi pocket vest ( even in summer ) and over the years I have weeded out the things I didn't use, and kept and added things I do use. My vest doesn't really look like I'm carrying much, but it can carry quite a bit. Nice video, I enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing it. JT

I'm a fan of Toor knives for the design, materials and history. But a a good, rugged fixed blade near the front, center line (none of this scout carry stuff!) is a great backup. I love both my Toor Serpent and ESSE Izula 2 for that purpose, especially when in less knife accepting areas

I have had several issues with Benchmade autos. From springs breaking to other minor things. Microtech on the other hand I am a fan of. Their OTF Combat Troodons and the Socom Elite autos, from experience have never let me down. For self defense I lean towards fixed blade anyway.

The point is ,,, anything you use against another is considered a weapon and is an assault, intentional or not, even to touch another without their consent is an assault. As the man mentioned, avoid all confrontation even if it means running away. Running away doesn't mean you're a coward, it means you have enough common sense to know a situation can go from a spark to a volcano. Knowing your strength also means knowing you have the ability to cause injury and death. Knowing your strength also means knowing your ability to use your head and control your emotions. If possible, it is always better to run, it might save you from legal fees and jail time. Think about it. If you want a real fighting knife get a full tang double edged dagger, 6 inch to 9 inch in blade length with a quillion (finger guard). Locks and springs break, butterflies are troublesome. Single edged knifes require more maneuvering. Always comply with your local, state and fed laws. In knife fighting the object is to impale a critical organ (heart / lung), sever a major artery as in the neck or render the airway useless. Just slashing away causes mass bleeding. When using a dagger you can cut/slash without having to rotate the knife blade to cut the objective. A dagger penetrates better because the double edge blade has less resistance. Having two blades increases the ability to inflict more damage internally. Two blades are better than one. Remember this, the early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese. Couple things - where's the pepper spray? I have two in my rig, one on the dash velcro with the jogger hand strap in case me or my old lady need to get out in a shitty area and we also use for jogging early am or at night. Two - the knife clipped onto the pocket. That seems like the easiest place to draw my knife and where it's most practical. Sometimes wear it inside the waistband but rubs the waist raw. And having to pull up one or two layers of clothing then grabbing for a pretty small object while I'm trying to keep fixed on something bad seems more difficult. But after watching this, definitely giving second thought to a fixed blade/holster. 3, send the Benchmade's in for a free cleaning/spring adjustment. Just got mine back and it's great. 4, love the amazon bit.

Fixed blades are definitely overlooked so often and I’m not sure why. I understand folders are just more convenient but I think the benefits of a fixed blade far outweigh the convenience of a folder or otf etc.

someone recently explained to me another use for a bic lighter and its what he called "fist packing" basically if you hold something in your hand, when you punch something the thing in your hand will keep your hand from collapsing and it makes your punch land with way way way more force and bics are perfect size for a lot of fists

Maybe try *sniff* cleaning and oiling *sniff* your folders and they *sniff* might function a lot better but yes a fixed *sniff* blade is always a better option so I have to agree on that.

Merry Christmas mate.! Benchmade will fix all that folders & OTF if you send it in to them. The knives just need new washers, bearings or springs etc. Most of those knives have a lifetime warranty. It's worth the effort if you've had those great knives for some time now. I carry a folder (Honey Badger) & a fixed blade (Esse Izula) & an Everlight TAClight. I carry roughly the same equipment for EDC. My knife is handmade high carbon steel (0-1 tool steel) that I wear around my neck. A lower end 1500 lumen flashlight with the ridges you described. My handgun is a S&W 686 with a 4-inch barrel in a shoulder holster. All my stuff is carried specifically to work around my disabilities. (Thanks Uncle Sam). And if I ever have to go to court over it, I'll look like a "Gandpa Fudd"). I dress like late middle-aged men in my area, and it makes it easy to conceal what I have. Sometimes going "grey man" is your best friend.
