I've been keeping old electronic devices from the early 90's and 2000's example snes console, ps2 slim and crt tvs will these devices have problems with aluminum electrolytic capacitors if stored for a long time?
@ElectronicsNotes Жыл бұрын
Often they last quite well. Older electrolytic like those in valve or the radios need to be handled with care. More modern ones tend to be relatively reliable, but be aware they do degrade with time.

@@ElectronicsNotes Are electrolytic capacitors from the early 90's considered modern or not? what is the frequency of use of them in electronic devices to avoid damage due to disuse?

The original Xbox had a capacitor that was known to leak. I wouldnt take any chances. I plan on recapping my consoles and CRT TVs my CRT pictures are all fucked up and I suspect the caps are bad.

Difficult to give exact figures because different manufacturers, manufacturing processes age at different rates. I think I would proceed with caution and see how you go. They'll probably be OK.

from personal experience and some research with mostly 20 year old game consoles electrolytic go bad wither they are used or not, wither it goes bad faster used frequently or not idk. Electrolytic can go bad as soon as 7ish years but theirs's also reports of electrolytic lasting 30 or more years with no obvious signs of degrading. How long they last depends heavily on the specific brand and model of the electrolytic capacitor. if you are trying to replace capacitors i recommend doing some personal research in a specific electrolytic capacitor before buying them. i am not super knowledgeable in electrolytic, hints why i clicked on this video, so don't take everything i said to be absolute fact. i hope you found or will find the information you are looking for on this subject. I am here to learn so if you learned any useful information since your message feel free to tell or correct me on my information given.

there a risk of this aluminum electrolytic capacitor of electronic device long term storage opening and leaking acid and corroding the PCB board?
@ElectronicsNotes2 ай бұрын
Yes, this is quite true, but not all of them go this way. I think when looking at old electronic equipment, many components need to be treated with respect, and certainly electrolytic capacitors can leak.

To whom it may concern We are developing an online programme for the South African Department of Higher Education and would like to include your video in the unit on Electronics. Please also indicate if all your videos will have the same permissions. In order to assist learners who do not have regular access, all the media will be loaded onto a learning management system for download to a device. I would, therefore, like to request permission to download your video from KZbin to include on the LMS. We will provide full attribution to the video with whatever details you require. I look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks,

I sent you a message via LinkedIn as I did not want to reveal details here. I sent it a week or so ago. If you can let me know via this medium, then we can sort things out. Message will be from Ian Poole. I hope this helps.

Thanks fort he comment. We tried to cover the main types in use, but there are a number of types that we did not cover otherwise the video would be too long. May be in another video we'll take a look at them. Thanks for the comment though.

Normally electrolytic capacitors have a very wide tolerance, often +100 % and - 50%. The main thing to watch is the working voltage. This should be the same of higher than that in the original design.

I'm Pretty Sure There"s are 6U8 yF capacitors to be fond in both 100 volt & 2oo Volt and i think i have some 4oo Volts Myself Lyingn around from butchering SwitchMode PWR suplys ((some of them probably was PC SuppLys witch is almost always the noisy switch mode type..... Remember that the voltage only states for the most part how thick and high-voltage withstanding the thin plastic film in between the metal plates witch makes the conection you solder your contacts to.. So As Long As The Cap Voltage Is NOT Lower Then What You Had, Your Safe.... And If IT's Not In a Timing critical part of the circuit, power supply for eksampel it could never hurt,,, Capacitors are a world better today then what they was 75n years ago........

Manufacturers of aluminum electrolytic capacitors recommend energizing these components before 2 years of storage. Why is this recommendation? Is this recommendation only for new, unused aluminum electrolytic capacitors? Does this recommendation not apply to used aluminum electrolytic capacitors manufactured in the early 1990s?
@ElectronicsNotes14 күн бұрын
It’s all to do with the oxide layer in the capacitor. If the cap remains uncharged for a period of time it may go. Charging it and ensuring the current is limited will help reform this layer.

Electrolytic capacitors mounted on electronic circuits of devices manufactured after 1990 can remain unused for as long as possible without this disuse causing failures and depolarization in the electrolytic capacitors?
@ElectronicsNotes3 жыл бұрын
It is not possible to say because the time will vary according to conditions, manufacturer, capacitor value and other things. 30 years is a long time, so I would be very careful when using it.
