Does the flow metering pin make the shock damping more progressive? Im more it is compressed, the harder is it to compress it further.

Oleo name is interesting. Air and oil pressures working both against and in tandem with each other. Is oleo an acronym ?
@JxJAVIATION3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I like the way you put it: Working against and in Tandem! Oleo is not an Acronym. It just means something related to OIL!

@@JxJAVIATION thanks for.reply. Reminds me of the term oleo used for margarine in days gone by. It was basically oil, so makes sense.

I have a question: Why the shock absorber has to be fully extended when the gears are retracted ?
@JxJAVIATION Жыл бұрын
When the gears retract, the landing gear bay in the fuselage is designed such that the gear can retract smoothly and safely only when it is fully extended. A space saving measure on the fuselage!
@ductruong168 Жыл бұрын
@@JxJAVIATION I see. Thanks 😄

That is not a “shock absorber”it’s strut assembly. Looks like an NLG type but some Airbus and many Boeing employ an oleo type with integrated air spring or steel coil spring assist. Regardless, a shock absorber is a damping device only, controlling rebound and compression loads on telescopic or rotating assemblies. This is a strut assembly with an integrated damping piston that controls fluid flow between chambers and has a N2 charged bladder on the compression load side to maintain performance over broader temperature range. The primary purpose of strut assembly is supporting load, stabilizing wheel assembly and maintaining constant tyre pressure on runway for directional control on taxi and best braking performance. The resultant isolation or damping inside fuselage is just an added benefit limiting the load on airframe assembly and requiring less damping efforts inside fuselage.

over all its a nice video but at 4:05 when speed reduces the oleo compresses and not the other way arround, the more speed the more lift less weight is laying on the struts therefore it decompresses when speed reduces the wings generate less lift the plane becomes heavier on its truts therefore it compresses

why do we need hydraulics? Why can't the air just compress/decompress on its own?
@JxJAVIATION2 жыл бұрын
The compression is more controlled and regulated using Hydraulics!
@davedixon2068Ай бұрын
The air takes the first load compressing fairly quickly, the oil moves rapidly through holes inside between the two cylinders. After the leg reaches full compression for the load of the aircraft it starts to extend, this extension is slowed by some of the holes between the two cylinders being restricted this reduces any tendency to "bounce" and the leg extends until the weight and pressures in the leg balance out. Sorry if this is a bit complex but an oleo pneumatic shock absorber is a relatively complex thing. Basically the air takes up the initial load, the oil takes some load and damps out bounce and the air then allows the taxi loads to be easily absorbed without the u/c being too "stiff". The posters explanation was good but a bit too basic hence your question. I hope this helps.
