I am a two month old ostomate. Is that the right terminology? Of ALL the videos and websites I've been to yours is BY FAR the most useful and best explained part of this whole process. What the heck each of these items are for AND how to use them. I've pained to find certain pieces of info and they've all been sitting here waiting for me to watch! Thank you for your care and support for us!! Can I admit it's kinda "arts and crafts fun" having all these things to "play" with? Lol. Seriously, thank you more than I can say here in text!!

Very informative. My issues has always been needing deep convexity. Jo Hoeflok you are missed. She pulled my through a difficult time 3 years ago with an ostomy. Amazing supportive compassionate woman. 2018 meant a permanent ostomy. Jo, you have given me the strength to accept and move forward. My first post op follow up with surgeon Dr B was ‘Jo taught me well’ which we both smiled. Happy retirement.

WISH WE KNEW ALL OF THIS BEFORE Thank you for the information. I've had a few issues with the supplies we were prescribed by our stoma therapist: - the actual site/stoma is very concave...we were told that when a patient is obese this sometimes happens during surgery. I would say it is about .5 inch below the level of the rest of the abdomen - I was using the paste/tube as glue 🤦🏽‍♀️ spreading it literally all over the barrier in hopes of preventing the numerous leaks 😢 - we were also prescribed the oval rings. I put them in a ziplock bag to keep them dry, then soak in hot water to make them pliable. But realized that they do not hold the shape i wanted. Now I understand that they have a memory and want to return to original shape - the paste does burn ❤️‍🔥 - I spray the skin surface with a skin barrier spray. Allow to dry and then apply the ring. But for some reason the ring does not stick. Hence, me using the paste as a glue to get et the ring to stick 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ We are new stomates and quite discouraged at times because the supplies are expensive and we keep getting leaks and have to throw away the soiled products 😭😭😭

we are new to it too and have had many wasted supplies. I AM NOT a nurse but I do change my husbands ostomy. Make sure that who are is clean. The ring is not stickig because that area has not dried. I have done the same. Have him hold a warm cloth on the stoma or gauze pads until you are ready to ut down the barrier. Don't stretch it out too far or it will snap (I have wasted two) Get it close enough to the stoma but not too close (Think of the barrier as caulking around a sink) Before putting te barrier on the skin (in addition to ALL of the above) Wipe around the stoma with alcohol pads or skin prep pads. Also make sure that the bag and wafer are the same size. If it does not snap on properly....it WILL leak. I know.... 9 months late with this info but it may help someone else. I am surprised that you were not referred to a ostomy clinic. Every hospital should have one.

Hello, I was wondering if the sheets would be used for covering up deep scars such as a belly button that did not heal up correctly after surgery leaving a very large dip that my barrier tape goes down into and seems to leak from that area about 60% of the time. I feel it's b/c it doesn't have a flat surface to stick to. Is this possibly something we could use to alleviate this problem?

I've had a Illestomy since 1991....The problem I find with most of these Accessories is that you have to take your Bag off to form the accessory around your Stoma plus you might need to use Paste....And that takes time...Trying to clean yourself up and shave the skin without SHITTING yourself....GOOD LUCK ......I've used the Hollister 8631 one piece bag for years...Once in awhile I use Paste and I apply the Paste to the Bag then put the Bag on...That way I can Clean around the Stoma and skin and Shave, even then it ERUPTS and you have to start over....I usually change the Bag in the Morning, that way I haven't eaten for hour's...I try to change it every 3 Days, if you go longer the Hair under the Bag grows and it hurts to get the old Bag off and you can get skin Irritation or ingrown hairs...This has worked well for me for 28 years....I use Paste once in awhile. No belts

my home health care nurse (not an ostomy nurse) told me to get rings that are kinda like concrete, they have some grit to them and paste that is really strong. I am using adapt paste and their rings or brava's but they are all so squishy soft that all the clear fluid, stomach acid and bile eats through everything. Help! I am still new, but want to cry with all the accidents hafe had so much.

Honey, go see your ostomy nurse PRONTO!!! She/he can get you on the right products for you. Every body is different. My body like Stomahesive and Hollister rings with my convex Hollister barrier. Your body will be different. Work with your ostomy nurse NOW and get your ostomy on the products that are best for you. Don't waste any time. Don't dilly dally around. The sooner you get this taken care of, the better for you and your stoma. We've all been where you are, so you're not the first one to have this problem. Get it taken care of RIGHT AWAY. Best wishes! My stoma (Rosebud) is 3 years old and she and I get along marvelously. No problems at all. You'll get there. Become friends with your ostomy nurse and use them as your best resource!!!! Go NOW!!!!!

* CAN I offer a piece of advice I just came across... I had overfill "accidents" at night a few times when I got home and yet not at the hospital whilst recuperating. I eat a lot and I drink all day so I figured maybe the excessive fluid output was due to that. I actually stayed in the hospital longer because the surgeon was concerned with my output above 1500cc. Coloplast, and I would assume most of them, have a high output bag. So I use their Click line of accessories and I remove the normal bag I wear in the daytime and attach the high output bag at night. I've had nights I woke up at 3am and the bag was probably half full, an amount that woulda burst the normal bag by pulling on the adhesive. In the morning I click off and go back to the normal sized daytime bag. I hope this will help those of you with high liquid output. Also in the daytime I use Par Sorb which turns the liquid into a gel. I figure it's better for my skin and the adhesion for my output to not be able by being so thin to get under the cracks of the adhesive barrier.

Cleome Jewell Google "Eakins Seals". They are the best. Eakins carries the 4 inch I know for sure. You might be able to get samples from the different makers like others suggest. But yeah....I just googled it and went from there. I order mine off eBay. The rings can be pricey unless your brand of insurance covers them. You can be creative with them also.
