Today I will explain how we make the bonsai soil mix to replant a Ficus and at the other extreme I will explain the component of the substrate mix for a Portulacaria afra - Little jade.
The ficus is native to jungle areas, so it needs a wetter soil, especially when it is grown as an indoor bonsai, because the air in the apartment is very dry.
On the other hand, a little jade bonsai originates from savannah areas, so it does not need a bonsai soil mix that is so retentive of water and can withstand better on the dry side.

Hi, I've noticed there is quite a big difference in particle size in your substrates, maybe a little too much, I mean you have some really reeaaally fine particles and dust in there and that's not good at all, there's gonna be spots in the pot where there is gonna be mud made from all that dust and tiny particles. You should really sift it out.

Only the volcanic rock needs that. All the rest of the soils are passed through the sieve. Inevitably, small particles will form from their friction with each other, handling, transport, etc. But it isn t a big problem because I mainly use them for small pots and/or tropicals. This means that I repot quite often and the soil doesn't has time to decompose that much. The substrates are quite high quality and they mix well toghether. If I was to use only one piece of soil and that was bad on the size, that would be a problem. Also think about bonsai nurseries and how they slam everything toghether there. This is very meticulous work by comparison.😁
