Great video. I've been so frustrated with softness of certain photos when I preview them after I shoot only then to realize the RAW is as I saw it in the view finder. I'm betting my issue is the picture style settings. Thank you

THANK YOU! For this! All this time I have been trying to figure out why my photos are TOO SHARP - I think part is that LR tech does apply sharpening when importing is occuring RAW photos (even when it is turned off!), and my "standard" settings in camera were also set too high for my aesthitic (which comes out of shooting analog for years so I am more about that softer more natural and not technology sharpened images). Thank you again!!!!!!

Is it the sharpness settings only give more sharp? If i turn the sharpness settings to 0 is it the sharpness gone? or the sharpness of the video/picture is true from the camera spec and not from the settings

Im sorry but this video wasn't that much help, I expected for you to give a guide on how to set your camera to take sharp photos but that wasn't the case. As nice as the video is as a novice photographer I was looking for certain answers that weren't answered. This Video maybe should have "Understanding Canon Picture Styles In Editing" because you were editing pictures not showing htricks how how to set your camera to take a great picture. No disrespect just criticism but the video was still helpful to a degree just not what I needed.

This is perfect for my pro-bono work at graduations at Marquette University where I shoot Jpeg and simply give the memory card to my impromptu clients, Thanks to Amazon for finding memory cards 'That Work' on the cheap, I use an Expodisc for custom WB and for incident light readings, These sharpness settings were just what I needed to bring everything together, The link is to an image of the Joan of Arc Chapel, My favorite location shooting spot at the university. pixabay.com/en/architectural-marquette-university-2290483/

I'm using Canon 6d mark II + Sigma 35 mm combination, but struggle to get good quality video footage. The picture quality is very good, but when shooting video and exporting at maximum possible quality settings, the footage looks almost like it was taken with a phone.. Also, it's very hard to colour grade the footage, as it becomes quite muddy and unpleasant to the eye and the default colours don't look great either. I've watched a bunch of tutorials on color grading and majority of them are using Sony's slog3 algorithm for shooting. Am I expecting too much from my camera or I'm just doing it wrong?

That was clear as mud (to me). While I'm learning, can I treat sharpness like the old single component setting - for example - a sharpness of three (old setting), just put 3,3,3 in all the parameters? Really appreciate people like yourself sharing these things.

Help My subjects hair and background comes out super fine :( like it seems like there is a lot of noise on the screen but it disappears as I zoom in. And I can see literally everything even water drops, it looks like a lot of noise. My setting are (strength 1, fineness 2, and threshold 2.) I read online that keeping the threshold low will help and keeping the fitness high helps too. Is this true?

At first I thought these also impacted the raw file because it looked that way when viewing them in windows image viewer, but once opening it in lightroom, it was indeed raw. So my question is whats the point of having a 'neutral' picture style setting if shotting in raw is going to have that affect anyway? Unless a person wants to have a flat looking jpg to edit? Would seem kind of pointless if they can just shoot raw.

This was so helpful! I loved the quality of the 5D3, because of that AA-filter which made the video look smooth and flat, with no busy aliasing in grass or other sharp lines. Using Premiere Pro I could safely increase sharpness in post and end up with very decent looking HD video. I recently got the 5D-sr, and found it to have a LOT of aliasing in the video. It made me worried. But, you helped me discover that it was merely the video settings that were set to high sharpness and fineness. Not necessary with the sharp lenses I have. I'd rather have smooth and soft video which then can be beautifully sharpened in post. Thanks!

Thanks Bruce, my T3i and 70D also do not have the fine detail settings for sharpness. For those I just use a sharpness of 5. But all the other settings are the same. Cheers..

Hello Avy, if you shoot in RAW these settings are not applied to the raw file. The settings are only used for the preview on the back of the camera.
