Understanding Chord Extensions (9th, 11th, 13th)

In this new video lesson I explain the 9th, 11th and 13th chords.
The goal here is understanding the extended chords and how to use them.
Triads and 7th chords are constructed by thirds. You have 1 3 5 in the triads and 1 3 5 7 in the 7th chords.
The 9th, 11th and 13th are the following 3rds over the 7ths.
They are nothing but the 2nd, 4th and 6th degree we don’t use when we construct triads and 7th chords.
To keep things as simple as possible, I focus in the video lesson on 3 types of chords only: dominant 7th, major7 and min7.
Specifically, I show when to use (and when not to use) 9th, 11th and 13th on each of them.
This includes the dominant 9th and 13th chords, the issue the of using the 11th on the dominant 7th chord (and how to solve this using a 9th sus4 chord). Then how to extend a maj7 chord to get a maj9 and maj13. Lastly, the min7 chord extended to min9 and min11 and the issues with the major and minor 13ths on the min7 chord.

Thanks for your interest. They're called 7th, 9th, 11th and 13th because they're harmonised by 3rds from 1 3 5 of the triads. :)

@@gtandtheacoustic0555 There's not really much to add here, the 9th is the second the 11th the perfect fourth and the 13th the major 6th. Just take a look at a piano roll stack up thirds and count. What is the difference between the minor and major scale? I understand how you got the chords from the scale with each degree but how is the minor different from the major?

This is fairly advanced theory so you might want to take a little extra time and slow down a bit to let folks absorb what you're presenting. Great info, though. Just slow down. What's the rush?
