CHORDS! Not only for playing your basic chords, but also for soloing very good to know how chords are built! *Chords are everywhere*

I think it would be very useful for beginners if you explain the order of the notes in the most common shapes. E A D shapes are 151351 and G C shapes are 135131. It´s easy to understand EAD like shapes that go to the right (on the fretboard) and GC go to the left. So, if you know the order of the notes in this basic shapes figuring out how to play diminished, augmented and 7th chords is really easy.

Could you maybe show the chords from autumn leaves a bit more in depth, because I'm a pretty new guitarist and I couldn't make them sound right by looking at your fingers?

There's 9 Diatonic ( 7 notes) scales. 9 x 7 = 63. Just keep it simple...that's 63 modes. FULLY EXTENDED CHORDS are the SAMETHING as MODES. It's basically going to give you every possible 7 notes INTERVALS within the 12 notes (chromatic scale) BASIC TRAIDS stacking is just EVERY OTHER NOTE..NO MATTER the SCALE....That's FORMULA . IT's SIMPLE and EASY it's easy to play EVERY OTHER NOTE on the PIANO... THIS is GUITAR LESSONS....You DONT Have to stack it EVERY OTHER NOTE....an example of that are the SUSPENED chords. It's not every note anymore is it...KEEP it SIMPLE. Example...the HUNGARIAN MAJOR = ION #2, #4, b7 1..........#2 3...........#4 5........6.......b7.......8 1,3, 5, or 1,3,5, b7 = Maj or Dominant 1, #2, 5 or 1, #2, 5, = min or min7 1, #2, #4 or 1, #2, #4, 6 or 1, #2, #4, b7 = dim, FULL dim or Half dim Here are the list of those scales..... IF YOU LEARN the REST of this..MUSIC THEORY will make more sense and EASIER to PLAY. If you ONLY KNOW the MAJOR SCALE...Will, that's like trying to figure shit out WITHOUT ENOUGH DATA or INFORMATIONS I dont know what else to tell you...EITHER LEARN THEM or DONT ALL 12 NOTES WORK....You can never play the wrong note. IT"S EASIER THAN YOU THINK. The scales works TOGETHER. They CREATE DIFFERENT SOUNDS. NOT RIGHT or WRONG...just DIFFERENT SOUNDS. MORE OPTIONS or UNLIMITED Possibilities...as from play the Major scale in 12 different PITCH. KEYS are JUST PITCH. The circle of 5th helps KEYBOARD pLAYERs or wind instruments plays the Major scale in different PITCH...THAT IS ALL. ITs BASIC. MOST SONGS are WRITTEN via MORE THAN JUST USING the MAJOR SCALE..EVEN MODERN DAY MUSIC i listed the scale in this order for REASONS.. SO you'll see how the notes are SHIFTING. They had to LABEL/TERM them something PUSHING DOWN from MAJOR to it's PARALLEL minor 1..........2..........3..4..........5..........6...........7..6 b2 b3 b5 b6 b7.....( Notice these 5 notes) b6 = Harmonic MAJOR b3 = Melodic b3, b6 = Harmonic Minor b2, b3 = Melodic minor b2 ( N6) b2, b3, b6 = Harmonic minor b2 ( N6) b3, b5 = Melodic minor b5 b3, b5, b6 = Harmonic minor b5 ( III mode of Hungarian MAJOR) b3 #4 = melodic min #4, Lydian b3 or IV mode of Harmonic MAJOR b3, #4, b6 = DOuble harmonic Minor b3, b6, b7 = NATURAL MINOR These notes are also the SECOND ARPEGGIO of the I, IV, V chords. COUNTING from A NATURAL Minor... PUSHING UP to it's PARALLEL MAJOR ( A MAJOR) Amin.......Dmin.......Emin A min.......Dmin......E7 = Harmonic minor A min D7 E7 = melodic minor A min B7 (II) EMaj7 = Lydian b3 ( E Harmonic MAJOR) It's EASY....RAISE the note BACK UP Maj7 Maj6. Maj7 #4, Maj6, Maj7....ect example... Lydian #2 = the vi mode of Harmonic minor You can make it maj7 or min/Maj7 You can also make it FULL diminished....1, #2, #4, 6 Just like the Locrian b4, bb7 ( VII mode of Harmonic minor) G#, C, E = AUGMENTED = 1, b4, b6 You can also make the angmented chord using the Phryigan dominant....1, 3, b6 you can also play Augmented using the Loc b4 ( VII of melodic min) The Phryigan b4 = III of HARMONIC MAJOR You can make it MAJOR. minor, Dominant. AUGMENTED It's easier than you think. Just go through them an learn them. SHIFT ONE NOTE at a TIME Aeo Maj7 loc maj6 ion #5 dor #4 phry Maj3 lyd #2 Mix #1.....converted to Loc b4, bb7 Ion b3 dor b2 phy b1.....converted to Ion #4, #5 lyd b7 mix b6 aeo b5 loc b4 ion b6 dor b5 phr b4 lyd b3 mix b2 aeo b1.......converted to ion #2, #4, #5 loc bb7 DORIAN with LEADING TONE (maj7) = Melodic minor. Mix with LEADING TONE = MAJOR Aeo with LEADING TONE = Harmonic minor aeo b5 with LEADING TONE = harmonic minor b5 dor b5 with LEADING TONE = melodic minor b5 Mix b6 with LEADING TONE = Hamonic MAJOR You can use the Harmonic or melodic minor b2 to help you cycle down to the 4th example Bb maj7 using the A harmonic minor b2 If you play it as a sort of Lydian = D min/F MAJOR As Ionian ish = G min / Bb MAJOR as Mix Bb7 = C min / Eb MAJOR You can even play Bb7 , C7 into F minor or Bb dim into B minor Or play C augmented into F minor/Maj7 ( F Harmonic minor) from A harmonic minor.. The Phrygian dominant is also a possible augmented chord ..yes??? if you play it as a diminished...it could be B lydian #2 to D harmonic minor You can even play A min B dim...C# dim into D minor ( D melodic minor) G7 , A7 into D minor The A7 or Mix b6 You can continue to PUSH UP Play A mix b6 with a LEADING TONE = A harmonic MAJOR Then raise the b6 into Maj6 into A MAJOR in other words from A minor to it's PARALLEL MAJOR A MAJOR = F# minor While using the A Melodic minor or A lydian b3 It's F# aeo b5 or F# dorian b5 aeo b5 or Dor b5 with LEADING TONE...yes?? You can get to A MAJOR from Aminor...like this too. or you could had easily played F diminised into F# minor via A harmonic minor or C Harmonic MAJOR A harmonic minor = F lydian #2 C Harmomic MAJ = F lydian b3 They're not the same scale...but simular If you played A Harmonic minor b5... It's F Hungerian MAJOR.....you can make it a diminished too...yes??? It's making F7... It'll over lap ....F7 , G7 into C minor ( C melodic minor) or while in A harmonic MAJOR it's D lydian b3....E mix b2....These two chords will over lap with A harmonic minor....D dor #4....E mix b2, b6 You can easily modulate back to A Harmonic minor The VII, II, IV, Vi chords of the Harmonic MAJOR or minor both are Possible FULL DIMINISHED In other words into MAJOR or Minor. The Harmonic min b5 or melodic minor b5 are also FULL DIMIHISHED If you play A lydian b3 it'll over lap It might be easier for you to see it...as D harmonic or melodic minor b5 while in A Minor....modulating to D Minor D dor #4 = possible diminished A is the IV of E to E Minor circling up to the 5th..... A lydian b3....B7 mix b2 into E minor or B7 into E MAJOR or C# minor.. You also could had play G# phrygian b4 ( G#7 into C# min) or G# augmented into C# minor....C into C# The chords/modes will INTERSECT more in different ways. IT"S EASIER TO MODULATE. It's not hard...you'll get used to playing, hearing and using them.

I've been playing guitar for years but haven't had much of a clue about music theory. I've gotten decent at making stuff that sounds good but I couldn't tell you why it does. I have always wanted to learn music theory, but it seemed almost too much to handle and don't really have time or money for a person teacher. This series has already changed my perspective. I love this series and I love the way you teach it, and I've already learned stuff I didn't know. Thank you and please keep making this series.

I started taking piano lessons at age 6 because my parents thought the guitar lessons, that I really wanted, would lead to rock n roll. I played several years of Sax in high school music class and after many years I am now retired. It has been a life goal to learn guitar and it is my first stringed instrument. A few months ago, I did what many people do, I bought a guitar and tried my level best to play like Angus Young. I had some small success but soon hit a wall. I stopped playing for a few months and I am back at it now, with renewed interest. I realized that I was lacking the theory and real understanding of what I was playing and why I was playing it. Your lessons in this series are excellent. The pace is good and it is enough information to really give me something to work on before moving on to the next. A pen and paper have now become essential pieces of equipment for me when practicing, as well as my guitar of course. Thanks, and I am looking forward to the next video in this series as I move ever closer to my ultimate goal of world domination through rock n roll !

On a piano you can play any major chord by placing your fingers on the 1st, 3rd & 5th notes of the major scale. But on guitar you also have to consider what notes your open strings are, so you sometimes have to fret the same note twice if the 1st, 3rd or 5th note of the scale is already on an open string. That's interesting. And it makes chords a bit more complicated on guitar.

I quit guitar somewhere around gr 8/13 yrs old or was it 14 which was 8 years ago. I never was good because I never practiced at all. I had a passion back then but it died down over the years (started when I was in 5th or 6th grade) but after watching a couple of your videos and even finding this gem of a playlist(music theory)/series, I've really gotten into guitar again. It's fun now. It felt like a chore/passion back then but really, playing instruments is fun. You practice, you learn, you struggle, you accomplish. Thanks for helping me move a bit more forward in this life- no, thank you for guiding all these people including your students and igniting and re-igniting their passions and interests. I guess I never gave guitar any time since I was always out playing with friends, haha. Well... I wish you all the best in the youtube career. I along with many others (roughly 736k) with be supporting you. Thanks, Paul. Also, I dig the cleanliness and simplicity of your vids, that's what you're going for I assume and It's really a nice direction. Also, nice camera, I also like the fact that you shoot some of your videos in a beautiful location, nice microphone, and nice garden lol, oh, and nice guitar too, I googled that thing a day ago and saw it's price($5k-$7.4k), that's mad expensive LOL.

Not only have a few of your music theory episodes made me a much better guitar player (still very novice) but these videos have helped me teach myself basics on piano too! I can't believe how much everything translates. Very excited to see what your paid for course is like when you finish with your first round of students!!

"We're only playing three unique notes." And it all suddenly makes sense! Easily the best music theory from the lens of a guitar video I've come across, A+.

Really enjoying this series Paul. I started learning guitar at about 15 years old but learnt from terrible tabs not knowing what I was doing. It’s great to be able to go back to the very basics and you have a great way of explaining things so clearly!

Notes for myself: 1:50 = Every major chord is made up of 1st 3rd & 5th note always. One or more may be douled. 4:20 - Same, 1st 3rd and 5th but lower 3rd note by 1 semitone.

Paul, this is amazing!!!! You are such a good teacher. After 3 1/2 years of struggling to understand the laws, constructions and relationships between notes, I finally starting to understand through your tutorials. I'm not a professional, and I can play songs, but I wanted to start learning the music theory. Sometimes I struggle with concepts due to their simplicity while my mind is actually looking for complexity. Ironic, right? Music learning is full of knowledge gaps that an amateur like me find sometimes discouraging. Glad that I'm older, stubborn and disciplined so I don't give up. Thanks Paul!
