The different perspectives are great. Good to hear different views

I set mine up with an EWC 3 zone board. Two regular zones downstairs. 3rd zone in the attic. No bypass from supply to return, but I used a motorized bypass damper on the 3rd zone. The result is that it will prioritize a call for the 1st two zones and it will only dump in the attic when those zones close and pressure in the supply plenum starts to build up. Instead of using a bypass, I used the EWC 50% rule to control blower speed. So if one zone is calling, the blower is on low speed. If two zones are calling it stages up to Y2 which energizes the speed relay and switches the blower to medium speed. For fresh air I used a Honeywell control that has control of the blower and the damper for fresh air return. I also incorporated this to both bathroom fart fans but I limited their time with a bypass relay. So the fart fans run the first 2-3 minutes of each call and the fresh air damper stays open however long the Honeywell decides. I also have a switch to energize the bypass damper in the attic so that I can manually open it and let it dump in the attic if I want it to. I actually use attic for hobbies. And then I can turn the bypass damper back on and the pressure in the supply plenum controls it again. Mine is an air handler in the attic. No gas. Open cell foam. West Tn. I love it. We did not insulate the ventilated crawl space at all. It was one of those things we were gonna do it someday but never happened and I don’t think we need it.

I’ve always heard it can burn up shingles. Is that true?
