The first time I read the poem, it reminded me of the theory of positive disintegration. It's the idea that a person's psyche can hit a crisis and collapse, but then it rebuilds itself with the advantage of having all the personal experience leading up to and including that collapse. The result is a personality more harmonious, strong, creative, and more prone to self-guidance. Even the collapse can be exhilarating--"[hitting] a World, at every plunge". Hence the "positive" in "positive disintegration".

This is a poem about the transformation from one plane of existence to another. This is a precursor to her eventual, inevitable end.

great analysis, love this video. does anyone care to agree or disagree with my reading that this poem could be about the increasing apostasies that the Enlightenment generated? here we could see the funeral as representative of traditional religious ontologies which are undermined by empiricism, reason, etc ("sense was breaking through"). The crisis of epistemes and meaning that are entailed by this radical shift in the structures of intersubjective social life causes the narrator to become painstakingly aware of their solipsim and isolation. The final lines of the poem - "Finished knowing - then - " could be a reflection of the decay of reverential authority which is sustained by faith. In this way, I don't stricly read the poem as depressing; sure, the narrator's crisis is alarming, and perhaps this transformation is not one they wish to undergo yet recognise they must, yet I feel a sense of hope at the end of the poem that the next mode of "knowing" will be a richly meaningful one for the narrator. Would love to hear any other thoughts on this masterful poem.

"Sense" could be understand as one of the meanings of anc. Greek word 'Logos', which is Christ (1st chapter of St.John Evangelia).

Can you answer this question: the tense of the speaker of this poem is very unusual. What is the paradox that exists within the subject matter and the speakers voice?

I think you're over analyzing. I believe this poem is exactly what it says. Somehow this woman is dead but hasn't accepted it yet. As she experiences her funeral she finally understands and accepts it.
