Understanding Jiggers: What You Need to Know...
Jiggers are tiny parasitic fleas that infiltrate the skin of warm-blooded hosts to lay eggs, typically targeting the feet or hands. Initially, they manifest as small black dots on the skin. As the female jigger engorges with blood and eggs, a painful and itchy bump develops under the skin, causing significant discomfort and hindering mobility.
Remaining partially exposed from the host's body, the female deposits her eggs before perishing. Interestingly, only female jiggers engage in skin burrowing. If left untreated, jiggers can lead to severe secondary infections or necessitate amputation. Afflicted individuals often resort to crude methods such as safety pins or thorns to extract them, posing further health risks due to unsanitary practices.
