I am trying to wrap my head around the concept of why I should have multiple VG if I can use one VG and extend whatever lv. Also if you extend a a filesystem with lvm using different drives, how does it choose which drive to use first when writing data ? What's the performance penalty exactly (slow hdd + nvme ssd ????). Can I resize the filesystem with lvm if I am using XFS? Btrfs? I need more information 😂 raid on lvm ?? Madm or lvm, advantages, disadvantages😬😁

I noticed that Arch Linux allows the boot partition to be in an LVM (you just need to add GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="lvm" to /etc/default/grub) but I think other distros like Ubuntu and Fedora do not. This doesn't make any sense because you should be able to modify the GRUB config file in any distro. Maybe it's because the installation routine in Ubuntu and Fedora don't let you modify the GRUB config file and so you will not be able to boot for the very first time after the install.
@hermanfelderhof53053 жыл бұрын
I'm glad somebody noticed that, I did too. Ubuntu has not needed any special treatment for GRUB since at least before 2014, you can just install Ubuntu in one single LVM and everything just works. That is what the GRUB module called lvm.mod is for. But the documentation has not been updated, as far as I know it still says you need a separate /boot (outside of the LVM), and most people are slow to change their old ways.

Thank you so much for the video. I was scouting many articles to understand, and here I come for 11 minutes, BooM I just got the concept. I have a few questions while I use the LVM on my linux: 1) How can I create drives like in explorer (e.g. in Windows we have C:/ , S:/, etc.)? Are these PVs or Logical volumes? 2) Is there a way to reverse the procedure, in case we mess up? That's all. Thanks for the very informative video. Looking forward to your answers.

If you want to add an entire disk, say /dev/sdb, to a VG, you don't need to create an empty partition on it and assign it a type of 8e. You can just do 'pvcreate /dev/sdb' and it will be turned into a PV which can then be used to extend your VG. Am I correct? (I think I am because I have done this in virtualbox.)
@chirasha-nz-zim8 жыл бұрын
I also did that and it worked and i am still wondering why its necessary why we have to create a partition inside /dev/sdb .... but the only reason that came to my mind is ,partitioning is necessary if you dont want to add the whole disk into the same VG
@Rhatcert8 жыл бұрын
It is true, you can add the hard disk directly as a pv, using pvcreate, the disadvantage is that if on a SAN (or in any other way) the disk becomes visible for another server or operating system, that server would not see that it is used by LVM. So you have the risk that the ignorant admin on that server would just overwrite everything and start doing whatever he wants to do on that disk. For that reason, even if it's not required to create a partition on the disk, it is recommended to do so.

HI Sander, here its question me about wipe data on adding a new PV to existente VG, if I choose YES, what this means? this will erase my data in that PV? Its must need I perform backup before this operations? my regards
@chirasha-nz-zim7 жыл бұрын
Hie @ dotz864, adding a new PV to an existing VG wont affect your data unless that PV was being used somewhere and had data in it,wiping your PV if it was never used jus means that you are re-initializing your PV and preparing it for use

what if you already have 2 partitions sda1 and sda2, and you only have one hard disk (sda)? How can you create an additional swap partition, a primary partition, and a new LV, VG, or PV (or extend the LV)?
@claudettenahjela25695 жыл бұрын
You wld need to add a new disk. Sda is reserved for system partitions. Whn you add a new disk, then you can start partitioning sdb.
