Understanding Multiculturalism: What and Why?

Classrooms have learners that belong to diverse cultures. These are the learners who speak different languages, have different beliefs, values and behaviours. These learners learn various things in such an environment. Such Learners are open to accepting different perspectives and tend to dismiss stereotypes. They also respect differences. Through this video, teachers will be able to understand multi-culturalism in the context of diverse classrooms and learners belonging to diverse cultures.

Multiculturalism has failed in the west. We hate what we have become. Cultures do not mix, but live apart hating each other. It's not the rose tinted utopia that this video makes out. England use to be beautiful 25 years ago. Now it is a living nightmare.

multiculturalism can exist if it is regulated by certain boundaries and rules. Also, I feel like the multiculturalism shown in this video, when people from different groups mix and mingle, eventually leads to a new culture altogether. I think that much of the enmity that different groups have for each other at present, is predominantly caused by the older generation that actively perceives their children growing up to have different cultural values from themselves, and in response, they are trying to extricate themselves from other groups to curb this unification. As an Afrikaans person, this is certainly what's happening here in South Africa. Challenging and painful era the world is existing in. So many people trying to define who they are, and people telling each other how they are supposed to be. Sigh

@@NicoSmets I think you misunderstand. I do not advocate cultural and religious separation, but that's easy for me to say, because I'm not a specifically religious person. What I was saying, is that, from my experience, the reason why many people (ESPECIALLY religious people) are breaking away from the general society, is because their children (like me) often grow up to have different cultural (and more importantly, religious) values and views from them, and that I think this is why multiculturalism isn't working. I wasn't passing judgement on anyone, I was simply trying to convey why I think multiculturalism is failing.

@@NicoSmets And if you're referring to the part about rules being necessary, I wasn't trying to indicate that religions should in any way be persecuted. All I meant to convey is that I believe multiculturalism can exist in a peaceful and sustainable way, IF and only IF great care is taken to accommodate vastly different religious and cultural views logically and carefully into the law system, otherwise there is not the slightest chance that all the different groups will feel equally seen or respected. This includes meeting in the middle, compromise from both sides. In America for example, secularist culture receives much more support than religious culture, and this has in many cases lead to upheaval and unrest amongst religious groups, therefore I believe that better and clearer regulations and measures are necessary to ensure the contentment of all involved parties.

You have missed two of the main contributors to culture namely time and environment. When these factors are considered it becomes evident that culture is dynamic across time and that it changes constantly with changes in the environment. Although I recognise the advantages of diversity I do not accept that these advantages are as a result of multiculturalism. When people move to and live in a new location they are changed by the new environment just as the people who already live there are also changed. What emerges is single monoculture that is formed in an environment that is built in part on the diversity and history of the people who share it. Perpetrating the Myth of Multiculturalism is not beneficial to anyone. Not the pre-existent population, not the group of new immigrants nor any outside observers. While it is obvious that we must accept and respect the history of everyone in our society we need to focus on what we share and not make up reasons that we are different

What are you on about? So many westerners are closed minded, it is really a matter of which group you are talking about, and also whether or not they have been exposed to people who are different from themselves.

@@Peter-sp4dd What are you talking about. You have it all backwards. Western people are the most open minded people, anywhere, ever. Western people are also the true multiculturalists. They use paper, originating from China. Brits drink tea (hint: not originally from Britain). They used to ride horses from central Europe. They used gun powder from China. The list goes on. Go ahead, call it cultural appropriation, you probably want to. Western people however only like to assimilate what they like. There lies the difference. Western people are very open minded to things they deem valuable. So, in short, you are just name calling westerners, to make them comply to your wishes and agenda. Seems like you are the manipulator, you are the abuser. You aren't fooling me. Who are you to tell westerner what to think and what to feel. Take you religion to hell.

@@NicoSmets No need to bring my religion into this, I don't specifically belong to any faith. Btw, I'm white. Like I said, it depends on which group you're talking about. If you're referring to the general, secular public, then yes, but not if you're referring to very Christian or Jewish groups. They can be highly closed-minded and judgemental, and that's coming from someone raised in a Christian household that wasn't even that devout. It still affected me very negatively. My point wasn't to say that Westerners as a whole are closed-minded, or even all religious people, just to indicate that you had no justification to use your condescending tone, and that you were genaralising by implying that all other nations are innately less "nice" as you put it.
