Great tutorial. I downloaded the manual for this and it is quite involved so really nice to have someone relatable explain in simple terms the ins and outs of this console (pun intended)

Yes. Cool! Thank you do more. This was great! I have been using Studio Manager on my Mac. It is great for saving my effects settings and managing hundreds of song and many seasons.

Sorry to bother to contact you. If you feel if you can help me, that’s great. If not, that’s fine. Thanks in advance for your help I have a question hope you can help me on Dm2000 setup. I hooked up microphone on channel1 and music on RCA stereo (or unbalanced) input jack in the back, I heard both sounds thru headphone and bridge meter showed both signals, but when I hooked up speakers to xlr output jack, I couldn’t hear the music on speakers, . I switched the music sound input to channel 9 and 10 (or any other xlr input channels), I heard both music and microphone FINE on the speakers and headphone, bridge meters. Do you have any thoughts on this no sound issue? It seems stereo sound was disable somewhere in setup or the stereo input not route to stereo main out. Thanks

Thank you for this video, I was wondering were you able to still have 16 channels/tracks when you set the clock settings to double speed instead of double channel? I'm upgrading my card from the MY-AT to the new Dante card and there isn't a source anywhere that could confirm that it wouldn't S/MUX if I set the DAW's sample rate to 96kHz. Would love to know if you've experimented with that setting or if you've tried it and it works, Thank you

Hey! Sorry for the late response. Unfortunately any MY card will S/MUX due to bandwidth limits past 88.2k. If you already have a MY-AT card, you could look into an ADAT to Dante Converter unit for your other 8 channels in/out, but you'd likely be looking at atleast $800 for a ferrofish, or similar. Hope this helps, and if you have any questions I'll be more timely for any follow ups :)

@@kierangainer thanks for the reply and no worries! I ended up looking towards the DM2000 since it can handle 96kHz natively

The preamps on the DM1000 are very good. Back in the day, they were dissed upon twenty years later, they sound pretty good compared to modern boards. It’s difficult to use for sure. But the small footprint and the power it packs are hard to beat. I’m trying to get deeper into the midi routing; I’d like to connect, in serial to the DM1000’s midi thru, several outboard processors and have Logic X trigger Control Changes and program changes to them by changing scenes on the DM1000. I’m not totally sure how I’m going to do this but if you have any recommendations, I’d appreciate your perspectives. Thanks and great video. Oh, one more thing, you mentioned the CL series. Have you compared the Sonics and if so what are your findings?

Hey, im glad you enjoyed the video. Compared to consoles like the x32, PreSonus studio lives, and even the m32's I actually find myself preferring the DM's pres, even if they can generate a bit of noise at higher gain. Hmm, the midi thing is interesting, I've never tried to control outboard gear with the DM so I'm afraid I probably wont be of much help. The only thing I could think of is to use different virtual midi channels for passthrough and scene change triggering, then having logic send the appropriate notes out. Nothing I can think of would allow you to have the console itself send out midi based on scene change, though I haven't really gotten into it enough to say anything definitively. I can't say that I've done any scientific or even apples to apples tests between the CL's and my DM, most of the time I use them in very different environments however once you get past the MUCH nicer premium effects on the CL's the pres, standard eq, and dynamics are fairly comparable between the two. That being said the TIO and RIO stage boxes I've used have 3 step gain staging which I've found make them less noisy than the DM can be in some scenarios, that is if you can find the "sweet spot" at the beginning of a stage. When coming back to the DM after using the CL I always find myself missing non-sonic things though, mostly touch screen and digital scribble strips lol. By the way, here's the link to the user manual if you haven't got a copy. Pages 245 onward talk about midi including scene triggering and more, you might find it helpful: jp.yamaha.com/files/download/other_assets/6/334226/dm1000v2_en_om_f0.pdf

@@kierangainer Thanks brother! The noise floor is elevated for sure just due to the age of the tech, I guess. Well, that and price point but I know a lot of guys on gearslutz used a DM2000 and praised it. So, I picked up an MLA-8 mic pre box (eight channels of my praise from the DM2000) for crazy cheap and wow! I mean wow! Those preamp sound really really good. I’ve got vintage gear in my studio including a Neve 1064 mic pre-and EQ unit. I know what good stuff sounds like. I think I paid around $35 per channel. You can’t build it yourself that cheap. Anyway, if you get one of those and slap it on the DM 1000, you’ll find yourself liking the sonic options between it and the DM 1000 pres. The MLA-8 definitely has a sweet spot depending on impedance matching of what mics it’s driving but that’s par the course for any mic pre, I guess. Thanks for the page on the manual. I cracked it open yesterday... the saga continues. I’ll report back what I find re midi control of external devices using the midi outport on the DM1000.

I've seen those MLA-8s floating around on reverb from time to time, it always amused me that Yamaha claimed the DM1k/2k's to have identical pre's when you can definitely hear a difference. Right now I have an old 8 channel PreSonus Digimax LT that is starting to go, I might consider picking up one of the MLA's, either that or just go all-in on a solid one or two input pre/channel strip and just stick to the onboard DM pre's. Decisions, decisions. Yeah. yet me know what you find out about the midi, I'll be curious to find out what you come up with.

@@kierangainer yeah those MLA8 prices you just can’t beat. A solid 1 to 2 channel peace is going to be quite some coin. And I agree with you; there is definitely a step up in quality between the 1K and 2ks. I picked up an old Mackie 1604. Running the Yamaha MLA-8s through that create quite a sound! Another cheap, secret weapon! I was able to get logic to send Maddie time clock to the Yamaha. I was also able to get the Yamaha to throughput that signal to some external memory devices. I’m very pleased with these results. The fewer cables, the better!

Is this only for studio recording??

Nope! Totally appilcable to both studio and live applications. I personally only use the console in-place, and have switched to a presonus desk for live work.
