If you feel you you just haven't yet 'got it' with perspective, then this video is for you. Perspective videos with schematic diagrams often fail to connect with real life. This video explains in plain language what perspective is, and then shows, using real life images, how it basically works.

I’ve been looking for content EXACTLY like this. I was inspired by this specific style of drawing and Parisian architecture. Finding this channel was a godsent.

This changed everything for me!!! I am learning how to draw in all 3 perspectives and while some things were making sense I noticed in my drawings when I look at real life pictures it was always off and I think that's because I didn't understand eye level properly thus my perspective lines and vanishing point placement were off. Thank you so much I feel i made a huge breakthrough with my progress!

wow. You hit the spot for me at 12:29 "because the eye level gives us a horizontal line, ALTHOUGH THERE MIGHT ACTUALLY NOT BE A LINE THERE"....lol. For the life of me, I thought the line SHOULD AND MUST BE THERE!!! Oh, well; every day one learns something that makes you go "ooooh, i GET IT NOW". Thank you. Thank you. I've been an idiot all this time about that darn horizontal eye level line that may or may not be there. You illustrated the point perfectly for me. Thank you!!!

So great to hear Lou. No, you haven’t been an idiot, you’ve watched videos which were often just carbon copies of other videos none of which explained the issues artists faced but gave the impression they’d told us everything we needed to know. If you find my videos helpful, please tell your friends about them. 😀

While you spoke, I pulled out a Rubik's cube, and rotated it as if I were walking around a building. I tried to pay attention to where the figurative wall would meet the figurative sidewalk. I found that that activity really helped to me to practise your teachings. Also while you spoke, I imagined how these lines would look bisecting perfect circles; circles relative to the surface of the page. This helped me to see how steep those angles are. For example, 2 lines near the top of the tower should be parallel to the eye line, when we stand high enough. On the ground, we could use a circle to see how much they are angled. A line might go from 10 'o clock to 4 'o clock. Thanks.

I really appreciate these videos explaining perspective. Years ago, I had a huge Aha! moment when I could see the perspective as I was walking down the street. I have been looking for really helpful perspective videos to recommend to my drawing classes and this series fits the bill. One thing I talk about is that if the roadway goes uphill, the vanishing point(s) appears above the eye level of the buildings, and if it goes downhill, the vanishing point(s) appear below the eye level of the buildings.

I love this! My one question is however what if your trying to draw from imagination or not from reference for a particular illustration?
@stephentraversart
@stephentraversart 3 ай бұрын
We can't draw from imagination if we haven't put accurate understanding into our minds first. If we can't draw accurately from references, I think we have little chance of doing it well from our imagination.

@@stephentraversart ok that makes sense thank you. Very interesting one thing I have never heard someone’s teaching perspective say is to draw from reference which is funny because often art teachers do suggest that for anything else. Great stuff Thank You!

Stephen, Thank you for putting up so many fascinating and informative videos. I REALLY enjoy your manner and approach. I must say, I am at the very early beginning stage of my drawing, so while I enjoy videos such as this (and I trust it will one day be applicable to me) I am still learning how to draw a “relatively” straight line, a circle, oval, square, etc.😂 I would like to get into a more “structured” course, one that builds on the basics that graduates to more intermediate-to-advanced work. I see that you have a course, but I fear it may be a bit too advanced for me. Also, while I am intrigued by architecture, I am more interested in the “urban” content the accompanies, or surrounds, architecture. Your thought are always appreciated.

Have you seen my drawing for beginners playlist? If not, that gives a range of simpler subjects and lessons. But just explore drawing for a while is my advice. Draw the things you love to look at and in a few months compare the latest with the earliest. Quite a lot of my videos are more streetscape rather than specimen architecture, so have a browse. But no need to rush to do a course, not even mine!😀

So, what if you hold your camera tilted? Would that change the eye level? What if it is also tilted forward?
@stephentraversart
@stephentraversart Жыл бұрын
Imagine holding a camera in front of your eyes tilting it up at a skyscraper. Eye level is the level of your eyes, and of the camera. It wouldn’t be in the photo at all, but well beneath it. Tilting the head or camera doesn’t change eye level. 😀
