Yes, if you wanted all answers with a positive r value. If your rectangular coordinate is (4,3) and you wanted all answers with a -r value it would be (-5,216.87+360n). The calculator will give 36.87 degrees for arctan(3/4) and you add 180 to get an angle in quadrant 3 to allow you to use the required negative radius.
@profrobbob11 жыл бұрын
If asked to give a polar coordinate with r greater than 0 and theta between 0 and 360, yes...without the restriction of the angle (5,53.13+360(n)). The book will also ask for a coordinate with r less than 0 and so on. Now I did not give conditions for my first answer, but I go on to explain there are multiple answers...indeed infinite answers which is why I finish the video giving solutions representing all answers with r greater than 0.
@thebassofmontecristo10 жыл бұрын
I started with Polar Coordinates for the first time in my life today, and this video was my introduction to them. I thought they would be a pain to understand but I see that it's just a different way to understand the way a point gets placed on a coordinate plane. This is kind of a silly way to explain it but it's like saying "you can get to the store by walking down the street, turning right at the first corner and walking up for 10 seconds... but if we push this cannon back from here a few steps and put it at a certain angle it can shoot you circus-style to the store's front door also." LOL Same arrival point, different methods of arrival. Loved the "think of positive r as forward and negative r as backwards" bit. Thank you! Looking forward to discovering this new math realm.

HAHA, Circus cannon:D I am going to try to get to work tomorrow like that. Getting shot out of a circus cannon school alleviate the traffic issue as long as I have a soft landing. I do not do a tremendous amount of work in Polar Coordinates in PreCalc, but I am glad I can give you a nice introduction. As an example, they are very handy in audio engineering.

You're welcome and THANK YOU Carrie for all your awesome support! My wife and I are working very hard to groW my channel to it fullest potential and that's just the kind of support that will help with my channel growth. I teach full time as well and with all the additional work load and teaching 4 preps it's harder to find the extra time to add to my video playlist:( Where do you teach?
@carrielane68411 жыл бұрын
ProfRobBob I teach in a suburb of Atlanta. Wow, 4 preps! I understand the challenge to add to your playlist. I say the same thing 5 times a day (1 prep), and I am exhausted when I go home. The good part is, I acquire an ever-increasing understanding and memory of the material. I taught Algebra II for 6 years, and I think I could teach it in my sleep now. Keep up the good work!

I'm ultra curious as to why the 53 degrees is taken from 180 degrees. I am just learning trig and I am trying to form a good understanding of the quadrant-to-quadrant navigation process(es). I instinctively added 90 degrees to the reference angle of -53 (being +53) and went with 143.13. And thank you for all of your time and dedication.. your videos make such a huge difference in many of our lives from week to week.

I would love for you to watch my entire lesson, but check out this video starting around 8:26. Setting up the Unit Circle Part 1 and Reference Angle Here I define Reference Angle and you will understand why you must subtract 53 from 180. Is there a video where you explain when theta is negative? So at the end of this video you talked about "r" being negative and how it would look like on the graph right. So have you ever talked about theta being negative?
@frede19057 жыл бұрын
Mr FreshBest I am new to polar coordinates, but I've seen a video where the guy showed a negative angle bigger than negative pi/2. When you see a positive angle less than pi/2, then it's in between the positive x and the positive y. A negative angle bigger than negative pi/2 was in between the positive x and the negative y.
@frede19057 жыл бұрын
Mr FreshBest But when r is negative too, then the point will be on the opposite side, which means between negative x and positive y.

Hello Rob again. You miss the point completely. Your 53.13° is an APPROXIMATION of arctan (4/3). Therefore the two points in question are DISTINCT. The answer is WRONG. However, if the textbook or problem said "Find a polar point CLOSE TO (3, 4)", your answer that would be acceptable. But not to a bacterium :)
