This was my letterboxd review: As 2001 charted the evolution of humanity, poor things charts the evolution of woman. Mirroring the oppression and cognitive enslavement of women throughout history, Bella Baxter transforms from an uneducated exploited slave into an awakened, self-actualised, fully-autonomous woman. Lanthimos uses his typical satire of the absurdity of social norms and polite society in a way that exposes the absurdity of a social norm that had long-endured and was historically perpetuated, that women were inferior. Bella questions everything, including every polite social norm out there, but most importantly the norm or idea that she, and women, shouldn't be the master of her destiny. When she finally breaks free of her God creator, and her abusive ex-husband, marking the end of her intellectual awakening, she affirms the central idea that those who controlled her knew all along, that you can't control the world if you don't understand it.

Attention to accuracy: Bella is the new creation (baby's brain in adult body). Victoria was the pregnant woman and adult body
