inversion table has been an absolute life changer for me: i suffer from lower back pains (and neck) and it really helps with both. does it completely rid me of the pain? no, but it makes a big difference and because of that simply improves my mood. the key is to do it regularly (ideally daily) and you don't need to do it for very long. And on a related note, are you exercising and stretching regularly? that makes a huge difference as well. edit: and if you have the option of buying 'gravity boots' (these wrap fully around your ankle kind of like snow skiing boots) i would highly recommend that. they are way more comfortable than the stock ankle locks because they apply your body weight more evenly around your ankles/legs which makes for a more pleasant inversion.

I studied and used these black in the '80s. WHat I found most helpful and rarely hear discussed, is the oscillation function. Slowly raising and lowering your arms so that the device oscillates up and down. They claimed back then that this helped pump fluid into discs.

@@Eastbaypisces If you adjust the back table portion, along with the right height, you should have the abilty to go up and down, with just the use of your arms. If you adjust it correctly as described, with just the movement of your arms either above your head or to your sides, the machine will go up or down just with the arm movement. That movement of the machine table just swinging up and down, up and down will create a pumping motion. Thats what he is describing. I do the same thing and its excellent.

I injured my back about twelve years ago, and one of these really helped me. I would go back to the sixty-degree inverted position for about two minutes and then go to neutral for five minutes. I'd do that twice a day. After about three weeks, I was back to normal.

@@CSneedInc Obviously, every injury is different. I think I had a disc that was displaced but not ruptured. Not every displaced disc is going to respond the same way. @@CSneedInc If you can afford a zero gravity recliner, you might consider that as well. I've bought two from Relax the Back over the years. I'll never be able to afford another one, but the two I had worked well. I'm still using one. If you can't buy a real one, the ones made as lawn chairs work well enough. You can get a good one of those for under $100 most of the time. My first chiropractor recommended one as an alternative to the standard recliner.

I learned to do self-traction at home with PT techniques laying on a bed or the floor. Then I realized I can hang from my cheap chin-up bar in the doorway (arm straps help a lot). I will even lift a 15-lb handled-shotbag sometimes to get a pop or two. Relief is temporary as my weight settles again, and sometimes it settles WRONG, causing moderate pain. Then I start again the next day. SO I learned one can go overboard and loosen the spine so much it NEVER settles (lands) in a safe place. So don't overdo it! Focus on maybe wiggling a bit to open up some side-to-side space.

One thing we must realize is that when you have that disc problem, more than likely you also have swollen disc. Relieving by pulling will not release the problem since the space can not accommodate the swollen disc. Probably it is also better to have some drugs to release the inflamation too to make the disc back tonits originak volume. I use "Sodium Diclofenac" Or "Potassium Dicklofenac". Anyway, I think, once you have that problem normally it will stay very long with you, unless you also do exercise to strengthen the back muscle. Cheers from Indonesia.

My experience is virtually identical. I've gotten three, maybe four rounds of injections. Tried two nerve burning procedures. Nothing relieves my pain until I got an inversion table. I will say diclofenac sodium pills helped with some kinds of pain as does a TENS machine. But inversions is the best.

I bought my inversion table a month ago and impressed with how it has helped me! A pinched nerve gave me wicked 2 & 1/2 day body pain and headache from a compressed spine. I use to get the body pain and headache often when I was busy working (sitting) and didn’t use the inversion table for a couple days. However, using it three times in the morning for just 2 minutes the headache and pain disappeared in 2 hours. I’ll use it now on a regular schedule to prevent the pain and headache from returning.

@Angry it's a gift I have 3 bulging discs: one with stenosis and one with generation. I did the Teeter XC5 at the Relax Your Back store 4x but it made my knees and ankles hurt. There were days I did 3-5 minutes. There were days my alignment wasn't perfect which is important. I didn't realize if you had knee sprains you weren't supposed to use the table. They only asked me about glaucoma, blood pressure, and other things. I am hoping once my sprains heal, I can use the table at a lower angle as you suggested and my knees and ankles will not hurt as much.

I have had an inversion table for decades. It's very good for prevention of episodic back pain but won't cure an acute episode when it might trigger a back spasm. Problem is if you are pain free, it's easy to drop out of using it entirely. I should probably schedule myself to do it more regularly, say every Sunday evening and Wednesday evening. Sure beats needing surgery!

Love my Teeter. Best investment ever. To me it's a "muscle stretch and relief machine" that lets your bones then align on their own. To each his own but I don't use the angle belt as I find my greatest relief is inverting completely eventually during my session and then slightly moving around my neck and head while they're hanging with my shoulders and arms and back muscles gravity/pressure off. (feels great for neck muscles) I also use the handles to further traction my back while in the half back up position by pushing on them slightly. Worth every penny, wouldn't be without one.

I had the original for 20 yrs and got this one yesterday (from HSN for $100 less than on the Teeter website) and put it together. Teeters is the only one that is FDA approved to treat about 10 medical conditions and is a Class 1 medical device. I didn't need another one, the original was fine and since I'm not used to the new one I actually prefer the old one. You don't need to invert for more than 5 min a day. The disks in ur back only get so "full" and will receive the max amount of nourishment they get from decompression in 5 min. You can use it more if you want but you don't really get more benefit for ur discs. HSN has it on sale regularly but always at the end of the year and this was the first time the top model was on sale for $400 no S&H

I haven't used mine in a few years, but I've got it on standby. I had a laminectomy on my lumbar spine (L4-L5) in 2008 and since then I used it regularly until a few years ago. I've been to chiropractors and physical therapists over the years and I realized that exercise is the major difference between hurting and not hurting. Sometimes I'll get inflammation and I'll either adjust myself or lay on something frozen and it's better. Admittedly though, my Hang-Ups is the older design with the canvas over frame without the contours and accessories. Still helps though, once you're relaxed enough to let yourself decompress. I did get stuck for about 20 mins once; got on it facing the back of it. Couldn't reach down and pull the release up, so I fashioned a cable pull out of old wires! Nothing more humbling than being stuck in your own machine with nobody to hear you yelling for help! lol

I found one of the first models at a garage sale and paid $20 - it provided immediate relief from my lower back pain and eventually provided total relief. I now use it once or twice a year as a "tune up". I highly recommend a diagnosis from a chiro and then ask if "decompression therapy" will help . DON'T wait until you are in massive pain to deal with the problem - the sooner you apply corrective solutions , the sooner you will be pain free.

I have a teeter hangup's inversion table, teeter hangups are the best on the market and work very good for upside down situps, and it just feels good to hang upside down however I have had a lower back injury and I would not recommend it if you have lower back pain, stretching hanging upside down could aggravate a pain episode it did for me, I'm cautious when I hang upside down. I won't do it if I'm challenged with back pain/discomfort. However, just recently I was challenged with pain, if I bent forward to a degree similar to that of a Budest bow (I'm not Budest) I experienced pain in my lower back. I was truly amazed at how well the Roman sit-up bench worked. When I "carefully" did backbends it alleviated my lower back issue altogether. I think what happens is it strengthens the other muscles surrounding the affected area and really helped. The last two weeks I've been very careful not to aggravate my back using the over-the-counter meds which I think kind of helped, however, I'm feeling so much better immediately after I did the backbends on the Roman Sit up bench!

I support the device. I had a micro lamenectomy in the mid 80s. I used gravity boots and abdominal exercises before and after the surgery while hanging. I was lucky and have to admit I would not enjoy having an episode while upside down. Be careful. On the other hand at 66 I still enjoy above average strength, no pain as long as am aware of what and how I am doing something.

I think I know what you mean. Before I got my inverter, I saw a chiropractor and it killed me to invert on my back so I told him I wanted to use the table face down. Quick question. I am in law enforcement which requires me to carry a heavy duty belt. Which I feel is the problem to my lower back pain/ now hip pain. I currently do not have a bulged disc however, I was wondering if I could benefit from an inversion table.

Yes it has made a world of difference for my lower back and hip pain. It stretches the back and allows the fluid to move more freely through the lower back, it's wonderful. If it's your neck, you don't really need a table, you can just stand one your hands, even if the rest of your body is on a bed. For the lumbar vertebrae, hanging off a chin up bar will do the same for the rest. It's mostly the thoracic vertebrae that may inversion.

I was on the inversion table for not more than 20 seconds. My head started pounding and I thought I was going to pass out. When I was brought up my nose strted to pour blood. I was so diappointed because my back hurts so much. But I will never get on that ever again. I literally felt like I was drowning.

I have an Elite Fitness table that also has a vibrating pad that I can locate in the lower back area. I'm typically running daily at 60 deg for 10 min. It does tend to get a little painful on the left leg where I have had a rod installed following an accident. I'm wondering if "Gravity Boots" could be used? I do have trouble with high top boots due to the rod in the left ankle. I do experience a decrease of lower back pain. I have been diagnosed with a herniated disk and some stenosis. At age 87 I guess I shouldn't be too surprised after 88 parachute jumps a helicopter crash, motorcycle competition + a 7G split S in a T-38

My father got strapped to one of those traction machines before inversion tables became popular. They just left him there and he had fused disks break open. Then they gave him opioids to deal with the pain that caused. For the good medical advances can do, there sure is a lot of ignorance at the mid to lower tiers of it.

I had severe sciatica. I worked with 2 chiropractors and a massage therapist. Never tried the teeter equipment. But I was placed on the traction machine. The doctor forgot I was on it. I was there was about an hour. So painful, I remember crying. He also tried to twist my body with a sudden movement. He told me what he was going to do. He did it and I screamed. Later on when I suggested he try it again, he refused. Today I am fine. My back healed. I did have a recurrence of sciatica once. This was about 15 years ago. Everything is fine now. I've always wanted to try the teeter equipment just to see...but I am afraid of undoing something.

While inversion tables are valuable tools for low back pain, they are NOT decompressive. Non surgical spinal decompression tables are the only machines that actually produce negative fluid pressure within the spinal discs. Every study done shows inversion tables do not produce negative pressure within the discs. Sometimes negative pressures (vacuum) are not needed to obtain the relief needed consequently, gravity inversion tables can be very helpful. However, you are misleading people when saying these inversion tables are decompressive. They are strictly traction and that sometimes is enough. If proprioception needs to be circumvented, non surgical spinal decompression tables are the answer. At least until something better comes along.
