I go through some of Benoit Debie's cinematography techniques to help you understand his unique style.
Just to be clear: Benoit Debie changes his style to suit the movies he shoots. The goal of this video and article is to drum up enthusiasm and a yearning to learn more.
Think of it as a tribute, nothing more is intended.

I became fascinated with Spring breakers the moment my friend put me on to it. And what struck me the most was the visuals, especially the use of colors. His style is like a mixture of modern Film Noir and Cyberpunk, it's so unique and refreshing to see. Anyway, great video.

This video is superb. I just finished watching Spring Breakers and I believe his decisions behind the camera, especially with composition and lighting carried the film. I wasn't a big fan of the film itself but I had no problem watching it from beginning to end because I was so mesmerized his work. While watching the film, I couldn't help but think of Gaspar Noe's "Love". I wasn't surprise to find out after a quick research that he was the DP of that film and other Gaspar Noe films. Brilliant work. A true inspiration for aspiring cinematographers such as myself.

In this same vein, Michael Zyskind, who has dop'd most of Michael Winterbottoms' films and was camera operator on 24 hour party people at a very young age. Winterbottom likes to shoot with very limited crews of less than ten people and shoot almost exclusively natural light, so it is a similar philosophy. He also shoots many genres, so it's interesting to see that documentary style approach applied to other types of films. Other interesting dop's would be Slawomir Idziak (who did the three colours trilogy) and Robbie Ryan (who has done Andrea Arnold's films).

Hi- great video! may I ask why couldn't digital cameras like the Alexa XT (or Red Epic Dragon) achieve vibrant colors ... Couldn't we increase the saturation in post? And how much is the film latitude (measured in stops) compared to digital cinema cameras? Thanks in advance :)
@wolfcrow
@wolfcrow 8 жыл бұрын
It's not just one color, but the combination of colors that produces a certain effect.

Well its also the cover of one of Benoit's most notorious works in film, Irreversible (infamously the movie with a 9 minute uncut rape scene). So not really that click bait-y (in fact I clicked on this vid bc I recognized it was Irreversible). If he did want to draw in the clicks, he could've chosen a number of other frames like...2:41. ;)
