In an organization, management round the clock ensures that they maximize the wealth of the stakeholders, while the operations of the organization are meant to maximize the intrinsic value of the common stock; that is the true value of the common stock.
The true value of the common stock can only be maximized by making sure that decisions are made to collect the present and future cash flow of an organization speedily. It involves making financial decisions; to decide on the right mix of capital that will maximize the intrinsic value.
The right mix of capital can only be decided by making a forecast of the future cash flow by discounting it with a weighted average cost of capital.
The weighted average cost of capital, therefore, is the rate of return that will meet the desires of the investors.
