Caucus: The discussion Forum of Hindu College was pleased to host Prof Joel Mokyr for a session on understanding the cultural foundation of economic prosperity.
Professor Joel Mokyr is a distinguished economic historian and academic, holding the positions of Professor of Economics and History and the Robert H. Strotz Professor of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University since 1994. He also serves as the Sackler Professorial Fellow at the Eitan Berglas School of Economics, Tel Aviv University, a role he has held since 2001. Prof Mokyr earned his PhD from Yale University, where his groundbreaking dissertation, “Industrial Growth and Stagnation in the Low Countries, 1800-1850,” established him as a leading scholar. Renowned for his expertise on the economic history of technological change and industrial development, Prof Mokyr has been honoured with numerous awards, including the Searle Foundation Grant, the BFS Grant, and the prestigious Jonathan Hughes Prize for Excellence in the Teaching of Economic History (2019), conferred by the Economic History Association. His influential publications include “Why Britain? A New View of the Industrial Revolution” and “Two Paths to Prosperity: Culture and Institutions in Europe and China,” significantly shaping our understanding of the interplay between culture, institutions, and economic development.
