A wonderfully clear and elegant metaphor. Keeping in mind that the metaphor is not the Thing - whatever It is. The impact for this body-mind was a little tsunami of delight and joy in seeing the lights being shared and in witnessing understanding embracing itself. Beautiful!

My experiences confirm Rupert's words, and in my opinion, in deep sleep, the connection of our presence with our senses and mind is interrupted or disturbed, that's why after waking up, we have no information about that state in our memory.

True. The 'deep sleep' is the actual/real deal.. It is always in the background.. Nisargadatta and Bhagavan Ramana had mentioned this a few times - albeit rather sparingly, lest they are misunderstood. Another living Jnani (who seems to be in this 'deep sleep' but articulates it beautifully and succinctly in his native language - Telugu) is Athyasrami Subrahamanyam - who lives in a small town in Andhra Pradesh in South of India. He has been explaining these things for more than 30 years - that deep sleep is the original/primordial awareness and it is NOT a separate state and is only referred to as a separate state - relative to other states which come and go.

I believe Turyatita is actually a Trika (Kashmir Shaivism) concept. When the introversive attainment (nimilana) stabilizes, then the Turyatita ensues as the extroversive attainment (unmilana). As explained in Tantraloka. I'm not sure if it's found in vedanta.

Turiya and Turiyatita are terms from Hindu philosophy that refer to different states of consciousness: 1. Turiya: Turiya is often described as the fourth state of consciousness, beyond waking (Jagrat), dreaming (Swapna), and deep sleep (Sushupti). It is a state of pure consciousness or awareness that underlies and transcends the other three states. In Turiya, one experiences a sense of oneness with the universe and a deep inner peace. 2. Turiyatita: Turiyatita is a term used in some Advaita Vedanta traditions to describe a state even beyond Turiya. It signifies the transcendence of the fourth state (Turiya) and is often associated with the ultimate realization of non-duality (Advaita), where the individual self (Atman) is understood to be identical with the ultimate reality (Brahman). In this state, there is no distinction between the individual self and the universal consciousness. Both Turiya and Turiyatita represent profound states of consciousness, with Turiyatita being the more advanced and elusive state in some philosophical interpretations. These concepts are central to the understanding of consciousness and self-realization in Hindu philosophy.

(meaningless intellectualized per requested) Trika is not a term typically associated with Vedanta; rather, it is closely related to a different philosophical and spiritual tradition known as Kashmir Shaivism, which is distinct from Vedanta. Kashmir Shaivism is a school of Shaiva philosophy that originated in the Kashmir region of India. It places a strong emphasis on the worship of Lord Shiva and has its own unique metaphysical and philosophical framework. One of the key concepts in Kashmir Shaivism is the Trika philosophy. Trika, in Kashmir Shaivism, refers to the triad or three-fold nature of reality. It encompasses the following fundamental principles: 1. **Para**: The highest reality, often equated with Shiva or the absolute transcendent consciousness. Para represents the ultimate, formless, and unmanifest aspect of reality. 2. **Parapara**: The intermediary realm that bridges the gap between the absolute (Para) and the relative (Apara). It represents the process of manifestation, where the formless Shiva begins to take on attributes and forms. 3. **Apara**: The realm of the relative and manifest reality. It includes the physical world, individual beings, and all that is perceivable and measurable. Trika philosophy explores the relationship between these three levels of reality and how one can transcend the limitations of the relative world (Apara) to realize the ultimate truth (Para). In contrast, Vedanta, which is primarily associated with the Upanishads and the philosophical teachings of figures like Adi Shankaracharya, focuses on the non-dualistic (Advaita) and dualistic (Dvaita) interpretations of reality, primarily centered around the concepts of Atman (individual soul) and Brahman (universal consciousness). While both Vedanta and Kashmir Shaivism are profound philosophical traditions of India, they have distinct metaphysical frameworks and philosophical perspectives.

I wonder, do you know color science? Is that why you chose the color analogy? Because it is very apropos in more than one manner. White is the presence of all colors of the spectrum, all colors combined make white. And therefore a white object reflects all color and light and heat. The opposite, black, is the absence of all color. A black object absorbs all color and light and heat. Thisbis why people wear white in the summer and black in the winter. And since white is all color, light, heat, we can say that in that sense, it is fitting to have it represent all, total consciousness.

How does suṣupti (the colour white) become turiya. So there are 2 states (colours) and the background of white, the third? Turiya is the 4th (non-state), but only 1? The white paper. Isnt deep sleep ignorant though? Awareness of no state??? 😮

The flowers paired very well with everything else what are you talking about lol. It was minimalist without being bleak, the beautiful contours and colors stood out because of the contrast, and ruperts message and cadence emphasized their stillness in a powerful, delightful way, and the flowers were literally beauty in nothing - a great visual metaphor for nonduality
