This is the first in a two-part series of inspirational talks on the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita as interpreted by Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda in God Talks With Arjuna, the great Guru’s divinely inspired translation of and extensive commentary on this beloved scripture.
The speaker of this talk titled “Understanding the Nature of the Soul” is Swami Smaranananda Giri, a long-time sannyasi and current vice-president of Yogoda Satsanga Society of India, the organization founded by Paramahansaji in 1917 to disseminate his Kriya Yoga teachings in India and neighbouring countries.
Paramahansa Yogananda (author of the spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi) interpreted the Bhagavad Gita with divine insight, exploring its psychological, spiritual, and metaphysical depths. He revealed the innermost essence of this majestic scripture while presenting an enlightening and deeply encouraging guide to who we are, why we were created, and our place and purpose in the vast cosmic scheme of things.
Through ignorance, the mind of the ordinary man chooses to be sensitive and to imagine itself hurt through the senses, Yoganandaji says. In this talk, Swami Smaranananda will dwell on the great Guru’s guidance for a devotee to lay great stress upon a mental "rising above" cold and heat, pain and temporary pleasures, and to try to adopt a transcendental, indifferent attitude in his response to the inroads of all sensations. Using anecdotes, he will explain the import of Yoganandaji’s words, “When a man adopts a nonexcitable state toward sorrows, a nonattached state toward temporary happiness, a stoicism toward irritants that rouse fear and anger and pain, his mind attains an unruffled state of poise.”
This talk will be live-streamed during the upcoming Sadhana Sangam at the Yogoda Satsanga Sakha Ashram in Noida, and will be part of a series of discourses by Swami Smaranananda on the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita, as interpreted by Paramahansa Yogananda.
