The Rococo period is one of the most beautiful periods in history where people, whether rich or poor, enjoyed seeing and portraying the enjoyment of luxury in art. Luxury being beautiful nature, architecture, interiors, sculptures, clothing, pets, animals and situations. In paintings they portrayed a day to day life without war, stress, religion or politics. This "flare" was very much needed. Designers, artists, architects, musicians and all creators were appreciated, encouraged and employed. In this period nature itself was infused with character! Trees weren't just trees, they were fluffy cloud shaped pillows children can climb and play on. Fashion flourished and dresses were playful and gorgeous. The narratives were positive and inviting. The paintings reminded you to enjoy life and the beauty it holds. What a gem of a period!

And then France rose up and killed them all. The End. ;-) I love comparing Rococo with Neoclassical art. I make it dramatic for my students and they "get it." Gotta make connections when we can.

@@artedguru Actually Juan Pablo Salinas y Teruel also painted rococó-realist paintings of common people, like "Las lavanderas", "Mujeres en la campiña", "Vistiendo al torero", etc.

To be fair, rococo was a response to the aristocracy being imprisoned by the previous king. I mean, if I could never leave Versais (sp?) and it took the king's death to finally set me free, I'd go bugnuts with the happy paintings, too. But of course the peasants aren't going to see it that way.

To be fair, this is a 2:18 minute video to give students a quick overview in an art class and recognize the visual clues in Rococo art so they can pass their exam. (I speak about this in the description) Certainly, there is a lot more that can be said about all the major movements in art...

@@artedguru yes, as a primer for what one should know about this particular point in art history this is perfect. It’s an at a glance take. Sometimes I wonder if the Rococo reputation for being so much cotton candy in the annals of history isn’t a bit harsh. people today seem to be very into this particular artistic fantasy period. Definitely makes you think about modern times. This week I’m going to the Frick to see the whole fragonard progress of love series in person. I’ll decide for myself whether I see cottton candy or something more.

What a fantastic summary of the Rococo movement - rich, sickeningly sweet, over the top, and a little bit naughty. Welcome to the stage, Rococo Chanel!
