Understanding Vacuum, Systems, and Parts

Mark McCollum, Principal Research Engineer at the Holonyak Micro & Nanotechnology Lab at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will guide you in how to think like a gas. So if you have gas at a pressure less than atmosphere, this a great opportunity to get in touch with your inner molecular identity. All the parts of vacuum systems will be discussed and may give you insight into why your vacuum chambers work (or don’t work) the way they do.

What if you used peltier style devices that could simultaneously bake the walls of the chamber while providing a cool surface to condense the molecules?

This video really helped me with a question that bother me for years. My next question: approx. 90% of atm is pumped out quickly, a lot of what is left is water and will outgas slowly. Will a flow of N2 bring the remaining water out of the chamber faster?

Heated N2 is even better... remember water freezes under vacuum. Heat will help get the water moving to be pumped out...
