I watched all 6th scenes. Thank you. It was really helpful, especially for a someone whose English is her third language and doesn't know shit about old English literature. I read the story two times, but didn't get it at all. Watching this made my day. So thanks.

Thank you for helping me better understand this complex short story!! It’s definitely something to ponder over in our own lives but to not ponder too much, in a balance of naivety and knowledge there is happiness. Too much “knowledge” so to speak would only end in gloom as did with Mr. Goodman.

Hawthorne is much deeper than just the moralist you make him out to be. And he remains a deeply Protestant writer. After all, a person has no power over its dream! There's no choice for Brown, as there is no choice for anyone. Brown was a lost person. And the dream, the unconscious only showed him his path which lies beyond the faith/Faith. And then Brown lives out his life, already realizing that he is lost.

I’ve read this story many times and very much enjoyed your thoughts on it. Thank you. As a side note: the “domestic worship” of the deacon near the end was a daily family worship practice made up of Bible-reading, singing, and prayers, almost always led by the father of the family. In some very conservative Christian circles “family worship” is still prevalent.

Really excellent explanation and analysis of this amazing short story. 👍👍👍 I always thought it was an indictment of the New England propensity to always look for the weaknesses and failings in one's neighbors. This tendency still exists and it's built in part on a false sense of superiority and self-righteousness. It's a very complex subject, the Puritan mindset, and you brought up some really excellent ideas.

Hawthorne was also plagued with the knowledge that some of his ancestors were also part of the Salem Witch Trials and they were not the completely Godly people that were venerated in early New England History, for lack of a better way of putting it. Their hypocrisy and involvement in such an event was shameful to him, to the point where he changed the spelling of his name and added a W to Hathorne. So, evil touched his ancestors although they were considered Goodmen, as it touches all of us through our big or small acts or social mores of the time, ie. the belief in witches, religious bias or prejudice. A little background on Hawthorne's family history would also add to the depth of why he wrote this story I think.
