Being out of high school now it’s become a goal of mine to be sophisticated and a lot of the people I look up too have that and a great memory to go along with it, I’m just so hesitant on taking aderral because for one I don’t want to have to depend on medication and what if you become addicted? Even at 62, I'll NEVER forget the first time I took a stimulant. It was as if my brain re-booted for the first time. It wasn't a prescribed medicine & the use of illegal stimulants in an effort to stay "booted" certainly didn't do me any favors. It was after an honest talk with a good Dr that I finally had a legal & fairly safe way of treating this. I believe the rise in stimulant use may be caused by folks self-medicating as I did & the addiction is more to the feeling of thinking clearly than the actual drug, at least at first. Anyone else relate?

I feel you. I have the same issues. I actually switched to audiobooks because it takes me so long to read a book due to reading the same paragraph multiple times, or having to go back several pages to read something again to get context for something later because I either forgot what happened, or...... shit.... oh yeah, completely missed something. Even with audio books, I find myself rewinding upwards of a half hour because I zoned out and missed a bunch of shit. I have been independent of my medication for 5 years now. I am a full time student and working full time. For the first time in my life I have maintained a 3.8 GPA and am set to graduate next year. Just wish I hadn't waited so long to return to school sometimes. My biggest issue that I am dealing with while being unmedicated is like he said, putting things off until it's more of an emergency. My procrastination has gotten so bad, but I am able to complete all of my coursework in about 12 hours and submit within an hour of the deadline no problem. My biggest fear is if I continue staying off my medication, that I will not be able to enter my career field and be successful (computer programming). Programming deals with deadlines, and I am incapable of completing things prior to a deadline in my current form. Perhaps I should find a doc and get back on my medication, but I have gone so far and proven so many doctors wrong who told me I would never be able to function without it. The doctors were simultaneously correct, and incorrect. I can function fine, I just have a hard time with time management. In fact, I have no sense of time. 5 minutes can pass, and it will feel like 5 hours. 3 hours will pass, and it will feel like only seconds has passed. I only know the days of the week by whether or not I work, or whether something is due and I need to knock it out in an hour......... It's frustrating, but sometimes I feel like a superhero at the same time. Now that I've finished this comment, I need to rewind about 5 minutes.... I think. [edited to make the comment less word vomit] [edit again, I completely forgot that months will pass without me realizing it as well... But I think that may have to do with aging.... Though I'm only 30, so time shouldn't be moving that fast yet...]

I have ADHD and I've got goosebumps from watching this as this sounds as an accurate description of my life, as if someone just stalked me and described it. Thank you for spreading awareness! And thank you for the reminder that it is not the matter of willpower and people with ADHD are not just "lazy" or "care free" (or whatever people around them label them with). I might mistaking because I am not a professional but I have an assumption or a hypothesis that neorotypical people are more linear in their development, meaning that if they can do a "hard" thing they also can automatically do something that is considered "easier" on the scale, whereas for ADHD people the complexity levels system is rather nonlinear, which is why e.g. people can't understand why I speak 4 languages, play music instruments and study a technical study field but can't remember or can't make myself doing laundry/dishes or do a lot of accident mistakes while filling the bureaucratic forms or can't concentrate on something very "simple". That's why it's considered to be laziness, because the level of complexity of the task is not linear anymore, so other people who know what you achieved *assume you should not have problem* with the tasks that are "simpler" compared to your previous achievements (without taking into consideration such parameters as boredom, the level of emergency, if the task is monotonous, if it's something you can hyperfocus one day vs. something you have to remember to do everyday etc.). However, please correct me if I am wrong because I am not sure with about this "linear/ not linear complexity" hypothesis P.s. I just got out of depressive episode caused by ADHD related everyday struggles and trying to get an ADHD diagnosis appointment but it is hard to find one for state insurance in Germany

I love that a video about ADHD is 28 minutes long Edit: I have no idea what to say, but I cannot thank this video enough. I'm not even kidding, it is responsible for my diagnosis. There was a night in August last year where I listened to this video in the background and just listened in awe, realising that practically everything this doctor said, was something relatable. I had suspected it was ADHD well before but we didn't have absolute proof. In September I got my actual diagnosis and was provided with medication (But this is not the only solution to ADHD! Some people find that alternate methods work just as well, everyone is different), and ever since, it has been life changing. I've been getting the support and arrangements needed in school, I can finally relax a little bit and not be so hard on myself for who I am, it's just incredible, and it wouldn't've happened if not for this video. So huge thanks to Understood for uploading, and to Dr Thomas E. Brown!

Always tried to 'just focus' and push myself, thinking maybe it's all in my head, but it never worked. Man I am so tired
@bradblask3 жыл бұрын
You are not alone and there's nothing 'wrong' with you. ADHD can be maddening but it can be managed. Your brain is not defective it just functions differently than other's. Medication has helped me considerably. I understand that may be hard for you to get where you are but don't lose hope. I know exactly what you mean when you say "I'm so tired", I could never count the number of times in my life that I've said out loud to myself "Please just shut the f*** up!" when my mind seems to be filled with noise that I can't make stop. It can be exhausting but don't give up man. Do the things that you are good at and do your best at the things you're not and keep looking for help. The fact that you are here means that you are working to improve your situation and that matters.

I don’t think ADHD is actually a disease but rather just a difference in how we as human beings are created. You may find a place to just be yourself without expectations in the virtual world of Second Life. I usually don’t comment here but your comment touched my heart.

@@alex_poly1147 What you're saying certainly leads to more comfort and relaxation. But unfortunately, ADHD isn't a problem with someone's thoughts. I love reading books and watching movies at the same time. I work in chemistry and material science. I love working on several projects at the same time. I develop other products during the down time, while waiting for my current projects to finish mixing and or running thermal or aging tests and or adhesion testing. Thats my ADHD. I drove my co-workers,parents,step parents, teachers, and my wonderful German,highly organize,and virtually perfect wife crazy all my life. But I love being ADHD. I learned everything from how to... water purification, explosives, armor, horse shampoo, pie baking, nuclear radiation shielding, industrial coatings, and a dozen other interests that no one would believe or understand. When you are so called diagnosed with ADHD celebrate! You are going to drive so called normal people crazy all your life,but you are a rare and really cool person,with very few friends if any. My wife and I both work in mental health and even when she knows everything about it from the textbooks and working with her patients at, she doesn’t know what it’s like to live with it. I also think the fact that we can’t describe what ADHD is really like makes it harder for the ones who need the medication‘s to talk with their providers about it because a lot of us know that people like to abuse and amphetamines and Ritalin and will pretty much describe everything that we know from experience and it’s hard for the clinicians to tell the difference.

I am 52yo & always knew that I had many learning difficulties but it’s only been within the last year that I’ve been officially diagnosed with adhd & it’s only today that I hav a much clearer idea of how it works & the impact it has had on absolutely every single thing throughout my entire life. I am so sad & kinda happy, confused yet more informed on this topic than I’ve ever been before! Hi, my name is Dion & I suffer significantly with adhd.

The whole intelligence bit at the beginning really was important. I've been diagnosed with adhd since I was 7 and ,in school, teachers always just assumed I was a troubled idiot. Jokes on you, I'm smart, just in things that don't matter

I’m literally crying, sobbing out loud from relief seeing this man explain how i’m not broken; that other people aren’t ‘better’ than me because they don’t have this condition. I am 34 years old, diagnosed 6mo ago. Top student at school but life fell apart when I had to start ‘adulting’. This is me. Thank you, THANK YOU for this video 🙏 Best of luck to everyone else here with ADD/ADHD…please share it to everyone you know who has it too - it’ll make their day ☺️ x

i almost cried watching this. my parents always would get mad at me for not doing things and would get annoyed when i tell them that i cant focus and have problems falling asleep they always just answer "its the computer and the phone" meanwhile im sitting there crying because a cant get things done and thinking its all my fault and my lack of willpower that i cant menage things. its been probably about a year now that i seriously started thinking about me having ADHD and after watching this, where i related to like 90% of the things that were said here, i think its time to finally confront my parents and force them to take me to someone that can diagnose me and maybe help me.

The worst thing in ADHD is when it gets treated as a moral problem, that you're just "not trying hard enough" to stay on task or organize things.

Having adhd with a stubborn dad is the worst. He refuses to believe my disability exists. It's just an excuse to him
@sandytoes29813 жыл бұрын
That's sad, i hope you have someone eho will listen and help you get the tools you need. It can be a blessing or a curse if not handled. It's like your eye color always with you. At least you know, get the help you need and move past your dad's opinion. I'm greatful I got treatment.

I’m sorry. I’m a mom and both my sons 17&19 both have ADHD and it’s pretty bad. As a parent I can tell you it’s hard. It’s a fine line. I want to be understanding but also hold them accountable for their behavior. I’ve seen parents blame all on adhd because it’s easy and others who just “no excuse” because they want to teach kids to learn not to “blame the adhd” It’s just so hard for a parent. I try my best to understand my sons and love them and show lots of mercy. It’s a view from a parent. Try to (if you can) send educational videos to your dad. That helps a lot.....

I grew up with this. All I can advise is to do your best to get through and talk to anyone who will hear you out. You know and understand how you operate, so you have to adjust your surroundings as best you can and adapt to what you can't change as best you can.

I just don't understand how there are so many people with depression and ADHD, yet I am seemingly the only one. If more people knew what bullying, depression and attention problems are, there would be more (or any) people understanding me. I guess it is very rare but the internet kind of brings us together. Just know that somewhere on a different continent someone is reading your comment and understands.

Reading this comment section really makes me feel less alone. Awareness & understanding of ADHD is spreading, slowly, but it's happening. If we share our experiences and things like this video we may reach a point within our lifetime where we not only have to adapt to the world but the the world might take a step towards us, too, making it easier for all of us to better co-exist.

Your comment, like this video, resonates so deeply with me. There’s such a dichotomy with having ADHD, and that could be why many people who have it are prone to getting easily frustrated. Internally, they are saying to themselves, “Get it together already!”
