Brett and Owen for me is one of the best rivalries of all time. It never had the length of others, but every match was quality and all the story telling around it was top notch.
@mattm77982 жыл бұрын
True, but Owen never had the charisma Bret did. He could do flashier moves and was just a good a worker as bret, but his promos were awful and he just didn't connect on the same level bret did. He had two opportunities to rise to the next level: this feud with Bret and his return after Montreal. The first was his fault. The second was not. Had Owen not died the way he did, I think he would have been looked at similar to Lance storm: a great worker and nice guy.
@steve5by52 жыл бұрын
@@mattm7798 I think Lance Storm is amazing but I believe Owen would have gone on to hold multiple World Titles. I don't compare anyone to Brett as Brett is the greatest of all time in my eyes but there's plenty of people Owen was better all round than that went on to win world titles. That connection would have eventually happened if Owen went full heel as thats when he was at his best.

There program throughout '94 is really phenomenal. I love how drawn out it is. Starting back at the '93 Survivor Series and culminating at the '94 Survivor Series. If I have one issue with it, it is this: the Survivor Series match should have been #3 between Bret and Owen... and I don't think it would have hurt anything to give the belt to Owen. It may be lost on fans who largely knew Owen during the Attitude Era, but in '94, he was every bit a believable championship contender. I sometimes dream on the idea of him holding the belt to Mania, screwing his brother at the Rumble to ensure he didn't have to face him, while providing a quality coronation to Deisel (imagine how good Owen would have made Deisel look) at WMX, maybe even w/ light interference from Brett, and an eventual blowoff between the 2 brothers, maybe at the first In Your House PPV to give the new PPV credibility. Oh well. It was still an awesome, well built storyline.

Undertaker striking his pose at the curtain with the backlight is iconic. Also, I always found it hilarious that the new generation featured King Kong friggin Bundy.
@JeremiahEcks7772 жыл бұрын
Bull Nakano is just freaking awesome and underrated. She was a better wrestler than a good chunk of the men on the roster at the time. Bret vs. Owen is a fantastic match but you're right. The stipulation doesn't make sense for Bret at all. Owen, well, yeah, he's a chicken s*** in character but Bret should definitely not want to escape. King Kong Bundy is just more proof of WWF's hypocrisy, pushing 'the new generation' but like with Bundy, IRS, Piper, Jake the Snake and the British Bulldog, they're very willing to give significant screen time and pushes to the same type of people they were mocking. The Undertaker thing is phenomenal... until the match starts. And arguably what should have happened is New Gen Taker should have totally demolished Underfaker in seconds. The angle was potentially interesting but two Frankenstein like wrestlers, where the ending is a fait accompli, and one isn't yet a fully proven commodity, was not a great main event.

I'm a big fan of Bull Nakano. I've seen her matches in Japan during the late 80s, and she was one of the most brutal lady wrestlers I ever watched. Her matches against Alundra, while a step down from her Joshi days, were still really fun to watch and seemed to serve as a layout for today's modern women's wrestling because Bull and Alundra didn't act sexy, they just threw down and beat the stuffings out of each other. I've always wondered what would've happened if Bull hadn't torpedoed her WWE career by getting arrested with cocaine in her car. Maybe WWE wouldn't have scrapped the women's division and reduced the women on the show as valets who occasionally had cat fights. (Chyna, obviously, being the only exception)

6:31 It makes me sad to see this match where the woman were portrayed as respected athletic competitors, where the crowd treated them legitimately, where they were actually allowed to wrestle, knowing what would come a few years later. It proves that wrestling crowds were always ready for female wrestling to be taken seriously since decades ago, and if they had actually tried to do something with it at this point there could have been some great things done. Instead women’s wrestling in America completely reverted to seeing them as nothing but jokes and sex objects just a few years later, and that’s how it would remain for two decades after that. WWE tried to promote its women’s revolution as something new and progressive for their female talent, while ignoring that it was them who deliberately suppressed all of woman’s wrestling in America because the few perverted men at the top just couldn’t see them as anything but sex objects. I’m not criticizing WWE for going through with relegitimatizing women’s wrestling eventually, of course, their women’s division is probably the best in America today- but it’s still a little sickening to know how different it could’ve been.

I personally had a soft spot for Leslie Nielsen since the first Naked Gun the went back and watched him in Airplane and the Naked Gun series, I pretty much love anything he's in. Gotta say though it was weird seeing him in Wrestling ! Loved Naked Gun 33&1/3 though. Love your channel and content stay you Zane!👍

I actually audibly said “what?!?” When you showed the horrible graphic of undertaker apparently going to heaven and I rolled my eyes so hard when the spot light “soul” of the undertaker was in the urn, when did the deadman become an Angel 🤣

I watched this PPV on VHS like 7 times as a kid lol. I didn't think the "Main Event" was THAT bad.
@lutherheggs4512 жыл бұрын
It wasn't that bad but some people just love to shit on everything, meanwhile ALOT of those same people cheer for you broke mah videa gaemz matches, promos to drones, dude with their hands in their pockets in slow motion segments, jazz hands, invisible hadokens that the opponent actually reacts to in AEW

God I love Bull Nakano. Joshi heels were just absolutely on another level in the 80's.

I have never seen this ppv so I'm looking forward to watching this! Edit: I know Bret has never been amazing on the mic but, he never had to be at least for us in Canada, his promos were just real sounding if that makes sense? like if one of your friend's brother's was wrestling, or somebody that lives down a couple streets from you, and it was just neat.

As a fan of both pro wrestling & the Chicago Bears, respectively, I loved seeing Walter Payton make a guest appearance at 'WWF Sunmerslam 1994' during the season Ramon/Kevin Nash match. I was 5½ when this event took place & looking back on it, now, it's too bad that both Razor Ramon & Walter Payton have since passed away.; Walter Payton passed away in early-November of 1999, I believe & Scott Hall passed away, 22½ years later.

When I was a kid, Undertaker vs Undertaker is what got me hooked on wrestling again after not watching it for about a year.

Alundra and Bull Nakano had really great chemistry in Japan and putbon classics The WWF matches are watered down. As for Nuckekball, it was also a statement that the WWF NEVER goes on strike. Undertaker v Undertaker should have have gone a few more months. It's underrated and underappreciated. Truly a 5 star match & match of the night.

Now that you mention the whole reasoning behind Shawn & Diesel being tag champs, it just dawned on me that aside from the few days between Survivor Series & the MSG house show where Diesel beat Backlund, Kevin Nash was a champion of some kind consistently for about a year and a half from April 94 till Survivor Series in November 95. Very interesting Stat.

I remember "Watching" this show with my grandfather with only the audio and the screen scrambled and staticky. It has a special place in my heart regardless of how bad it is.

This holds a special place in my heart. Being a wee lad at the time, I remember watching it on sky sports in the UK. They had adverts as weren't showing PPVS live back then. They would put little captions as they went to break. I still remember to this day the caption after the steel cage match said, "Brets alright, but Owens a loser". Made me laugh as a kid. I also loved the return of the Undertaker. He was my favourite wrestler and when I saw him adopt purple in his gear, I was so happy as that's my favourite colour! 🤣 I was easily pleased as a child! 🤣

Throughout wrestling history, there have been examples of the main event not involving the world title working out. Bret/Bulldog at SS92 and Taker/HBK at WM26 are prime examples. Taker vs. Faker is not one of those examples.
@Don-Loves-Vladdy2 жыл бұрын
I agree but tbh that SS92 was at Wembley Stadium. Just having Davey Boy in the main event was going to blow the “roof” off, so to speak (it’s a stadium)
@jackcarraway47072 жыл бұрын
@@Don-Loves-Vladdy Plus there's an interesting story to tell since Bret and Davey are now brother-in-laws. Definitely interesting enough to fork over $40. But Undertaker vs. a fake version of himself with Leslie Nielsen somehow involved doing comedy skits...how does THAT take precedence over Bret/Owen in a white hot feud blowing it off in a cage?
@Don-Loves-Vladdy2 жыл бұрын
@@jackcarraway4707 can’t argue with that logic, Jack. I’d like to throw in one of my personal favorite non title ppv main events and say Bret v BamBam at King of The Ring 93. After the absolute gem Bret and Curt put on in the semi’s, I didn’t expect them to really be able to follow with much to compare. I was wrong!

The Undertaker vs Undertaker match was my first exposure to old school Taker back in the early 2000s via the DVD version of the "He Buries Them Alive" DVD so despite its shortcomings, this match will always have a special place in my heart.
@Kaltagstar962 жыл бұрын
Bull was awesome and it really says something when she and Blayze don't have much time to work with and still put on one of the matches of the night. Also really cool to hear Jeff Jarrett praise, if you ignore any time he's given a main event push, Jarrett is so damn good in almost everything he does.
@mattm77982 жыл бұрын
He was def a solid upper mid card heel. Right in that IC belt level and you could argue deserved a short reign as WCW champion, but not 52 time TNA champion and all that. Problem is he was also just a decent worker. I could hold up his end like the Shawn Michaels match, but I'm not sure he could elevate anyone to higher level. He seems like a nice guy in real life.
@Kaltagstar962 жыл бұрын
@@mattm7798 Honestly, I think of Jarrett is being a perfect dude for a US or IC title, like a mid card to upper midcard dependable heel that can make pretty much anyone look good. I think if he didn't have his main event run, people might look on him more favourably.
