@darrinbrown51593 жыл бұрын
What makes this soundtrack absolutely amazing is the references in the melodies. This soundtrack is a great example of leitmotifs, and just to explain what that means to those who may not know, it is a recurrent theme or themes throughout a musical piece. For instance, the beginning of 'Heartache' can be heard in 'Asgore's Theme' because of the relationship between the two characters. In 'Hopes and Dreams', you can hear references from 'Once Upon a Time'. I could go on and on about the many references that are in each song. That explains why you hear the same melody in different songs, but in a different rhythmic pattern. Anyways, 'Undertale' and 'His Theme' are my absolute favorite because they aren't intense like the battle songs, but evokes a different emotion and tells a story within the pieces. Each character, location, and event all have their own songs, ranging from slow and calm to absolutely intense and fast-tempo. I'm glad you did a reaction video to this because it shows that this soundtrack...a video game soundtrack...is one of the best things I've ever heard. One last thing, don't forget the hugs for goat bro and goat mom! Thank you and take care!
@MusicTheoryforGamers3 жыл бұрын
Yes. And one thing I did not discuss is that Megalovania could also be seen as a variation on the first theme. Think about it, the descending base line in the melody...
@KeaneJ1233 жыл бұрын
@@MusicTheoryforGamers Megalovania is actually the only song who doesn’t have references in melodies from the game because Toby Fox originally created the melody for his Earthbound Halloween hack in 2008.
@MusicTheoryforGamers3 жыл бұрын
Doesn’t it though? The descending notes in the melody show up in Megalovania. Themes and variations.

@@MusicTheoryforGamersYes, but I don’t think its intentional, because he first created the song in 2002.
@dylanwebster26563 жыл бұрын
@@pillowcaseee He could derive the same themes from Megalovania. There are also hints of Papyrus' leitmotif in Megalovania because of the characters' relationship. Edit: Sorry I think the leitmotif is only in "Song that might play when you fight sans" but still it is derived from Megalovania so yea there's still a connection.
@ValueNetwork3 жыл бұрын
My favourite Undertale fun fact. Obviously Toby loves his leitmotifs, and almost every song connects to the first few you hear. But the most iconic song, Megalovania, is Completely independent… except for a very small bit of “bring it in guys”. in the middle of the Papyrus theme he sneaks in a little bit of Megalovania (1:45:14) The song is definitely hidden to hide that a fight with sans Even exists, even having the fake “song that might play when you fight sans” in the official soundtrack to trick you into thinking thats the fight music. (although the internet quickly ruined that idea when the game blew up, and the secret route became the most famous)
@hasargel3 жыл бұрын
There's a theory that Megalovania is the players theme since sans has the first turn, and the existence of the unused "song that might play when you fight sans" matches that
@clemente39663 жыл бұрын
So, Idk why Toby put it in Undertale to begin with, but the first reason for it to actually be completely different would in fact be that it was made for the Earthbound Halloween mod that Toby made first, before it got a Homestuck and an Undertale version (whatever the order between these two are).
@exist40463 жыл бұрын
@@clemente3966 Homestuck first, Undertale after. Megalovania seems to almost be like his "watermark", in a way.... It evolves as his musical writing skills evolve. I'm hoping he ends up bringing it into Deltarune tbh, in some way at least.
@ToyotaCoronx2 жыл бұрын
@@hasargel i always thought that too because when a monster approaches you, their theme plays. You are not even considered a human at this point, so it could work like that. Also, Megalovania means something to do with being obsessed with power, which is what you are at this point. And finally, there are no leitmotifs from any other monsters theme, signifying that you do not belong in this world.
@Palgrave2 жыл бұрын
@@ToyotaCoronx Well, Megalovania is a riff on the word "megalomania" which means "obsession with one's own power" It certainly is fitting if it were the player's theme

I think the sound that plays when most of the musicians leave is the “Void” sound, a track that’s not on the official soundtrack, I think because it’s technically just a sound effect. But it plays after a Genocide Run is completed. It’s supposed to be a bit eery. Fitting considering what happens when you finish the game that way... since you asked what’s going on in the story at this point, this will be a spoiler, and a pretty heavy one at that, so for anyone who chooses to read on, you’ve been warned: There’s a character that is referenced throughout the game, but only appears at the end of a Genocide Run, a long-deceased child named Chara. One way or another, whether by surrendering it to them willingly or refusing and getting killed by them as a result, they take possession of the player character’s soul (which has the crazy power to manipulate time and the world of the game itself) and use it to “erase” the game/world. At that point, this “Void” sound plays and future attempts to start up the game after this behave as if Chara “rebuilt” the game with all the player character’s SAVE data erased, which is why the two remaining musicians play the basic version of the menu theme after the Void sound is done. Not everything the player did is erased, though, because Chara haunts the player no matter what you do from then onwards, even if you attempt to do a True Pacifist run again. Chara’s present in every ending after a complete Genocide Run, implying that they intend to continue wreaking havoc no matter what you do or how cooperative you choose to be with their wish to erase everything. For appearing to be like a game for children, the story does get pretty dark. Needless to say, Chara’s a murderous psychopath. Chara flat out states that while the player character may have made the choice to start killing, they chose to make it more enticing, stating that they’re the embodiment of the feeling you get when a number increases, and the addictive quality of that feeling for the player character in this story. They’re purpose in the story serves as a way to explain the enticing nature of level ups for people who have played RPGs before, and what drives players to want to fight and kill things. Some meta-storytelling, if you will. So yeah, in addition to having a great understanding of music, Toby Fox has a tremendous understanding of gaming as a medium, in addition to how people think about games outside of whatever story they may be playing. As for a little personal commentary, even though Megalovania is amazing to listen to, I can’t do the Genocide Run myself, certainly not just to hear it play in-game. The True Pacifist run’s ending is too perfect to taint it with the presence of a demon child later on. If there’s one side of Undertale’s story that I really wouldn’t want to spoil for anyone, it’s the Pacifist side of the story. The Genocide Run is supposed to not be fun, and most people figure that out after starting it and learning what is required to complete it. The sort of ending you get is kind of a foregone conclusion at that point, and because of that I personally don’t mind spoiling it too much, though the fact that a player who completes a Genocide Run still has to face the appropriate consequences for their actions is rather poignant and good storytelling. But for me, it’s not worth ruining the story for future runs, especially when I care about all the characters in the story enough to want the best for them all and see things work out for them. Needless to say, the Pacifist Run has a great story I don’t want to spoil. It’s really good and worth experiencing first hand, if you’re able.

I fully agree - amaizing OST. Even tho the arrangement wasn't made by Toby Fox himself, he still wrote the score. An amazing score at that. It's a pitty, they didn't include whole OST, but i can understand that - it would be too time consuming and also quite a few pieces are just a variation of each other. They probably decided that main theme repeating in many variations already enough. Also, have a question - how often main violin have replacement violin near him\her? I don't think i ever saw that in concerts in the past.

I doubt you had an order in mind when you listed all of the things Toby had to do when designing Undertale, but I just want to point out that he's always been a musician first, and a designer later. He had the concepts for the game, then made the music, then created the characters based off the music he created. The more impressive thing is how he created the game as someone who knew nothing of coding or game design, and how the designs came through some concepts and his music. It's really nice he's actually getting help with Deltarune now. It allows him to shape the game in the image he wants and put more of his focus onto making the music top notch.

I could go on for hours about how much I love Undertale's music, how it makes me feel oddly nostalgic despite not being that old, how the music itself makes me feel a whole range of emotions on it's own, how I can easily identify the story through the game's music as well as what the music is trying to communicate... Toby Fox was self-taught when it came to music, he was more well-known for his compositions than anything else before Undertale, and he also admitted that he creates a character after he created their theme (at least for Deltarune, not sure if that was the case for Undertale), so clearly, music plays a big part in Undertale's story and overall presentation. That might be why I see jokes and memes about how even if people will admit Undertale isn't a perfect game or how they're find with people crapping on the game, they get REALLY defensive and angry if people diss the soundtrack. People say it's "banger after banger", but I like that Undertale has a full range of various kinds of music, each for it's own unique situation. They're all great in their own way, even if I do have my favorites. If nothing else, I hope more people come to appreciate Toby Fox's music. Edit: 2:00:54 "And when are they gonna come back? Are the gonna come back?" ... ... ... But nobody came.

Came from stumbling across your Undertale soundtrack review, was overjoyed when I saw you did the concert too! The concert is stunning, and I've watched it though several times. I loved how both here and in the OST I could go "oh he'll love this part" and be correct, despite the fact that I play piano and not guitar. This whole concert puts a massive grin on my face. Thank you for reacting, and I highly recommend you play it if you haven't already, connecting this music to the characters and story really solidifies everything! :)

I am EXTREMLEY late to the party but just wanted to point out they did the transitions into the songs very well, so well in fact that when I was zoning out having this play on a second monitor I didn't even realize they already finished Metal Crusher and were playing the intro into Spider Dance until the melody actually dropped at 48:40. Fantastic stuff.

This was very interesting as I guess it was my first time seeing someone react to an entire video game ost (that is an orchestral arrangement of it, but still). One thing I did see you get a bit confused with were the different themes and leitmotifs that keep popping up. Like there were a whole range of themes you considered "the first one" even if they never played in the first song (Once Upon a Time). I understand that at the end of the day it's subjective, but as someone who has probably listened to the entire ost at least a hundred times, to the point that I can basically memorise many of them down to the note, I thought I might help in listing the main recurring themes. Some of them are similar, but can be distinguished based on the context of the song in the game (which I believe you have not played?). Also, this channel seems really cool, considering subscribing. Fallen child theme A: 3:09 11:55 59:07 1:01:56 1:04:02 1:22:46 1:26:21 1:29:12 1:32:18 1:32:28 1:38:07 1:48:24 1:49:10 1:50:41 1:51:54 1:52:26 Fallen child theme B: 3:38 4:38 12:30 1:01:19 1:26:47 1:39:06 1:48:49 1:49:32 Fallen child theme C: 4:08 5:07 1:27:13 1:30:02 1:31:10 1:33:00 1:34:15 1:40:20 1:49:54 1:52:15 Underground theme A: 6:16 6:37 6:58 28:22 30:18 35:43 37:07 37:30 37:53 38:49 1:14:31 1:15:25 1:27:33 1:42:42 1:46:21 1:54:24 Underground theme B: 6:26 6:47 7:08 29:01 31:14 37:18 37:41 1:14:44 Dog theme: 8:17 40:59 1:44:46 Determination theme: 13:27 1:08:03 Dreemurr theme A: 15:07 15:37 16:10 1:06:48 1:07:46 1:23:45 1:53:01 Dreemurr theme B: 15:31 15:49 16:46 1:07:37 Papyrus theme: 20:38 22:45 26:31 1:45:08 1:53:15 Snowdin theme: 21:05 24:13 25:10 1:45:27 Friendship/love theme A: (you kept calling this one the first theme) 24:51 25:35 1:31:33 1:41:19 1:45:49 Friendship/love theme B: 25:46 1:32:07 1:34:04 Royal scientist theme: 27:54 29:51 32:03 51:04 53:17 1:47:07 Undyne theme: 32:18 33:25 35:09 36:29 1:08:42 1:46:02 Asriel theme: 34:18 58:28 1:01:56 1:13:27 1:34:47 Alphys theme A: 44:43 26:17 1:18:40 Alphys theme B: 45:16 1:55:32 (Somehow you consider this the starting theme?) On September 15, 2020, I spent the day wishing I could do something special to celebrate Undertale’s anniversary. That evening I started the concert, figuring it would be good but not great. The concert was fantastic from beginning to end, and it was the highlight of my day. I loved every orchestral arrangement, but one of my favorites was Small Shock. It’s a nice quiet moment that contains both hope and sadness. Also, I always get chills after the pacifist run, when the full game menu theme suddenly transitions into the dark genocide opening-complete with mournful bits of Toriel and Papyrus’s themes to mark their deaths. Anyway, I loved your reaction to this wonderful concert! Thanks!!

1:11:20 This was definitely one of the songs I was most interested in seeing how they handled and can't say i'm dissapointed 1:29:28 You'll find that motifs are a big part of the music of Undertale (i.e. the use of the main theme). If you pay close attention when you listen to the soundtrack, you can spot a few melodies that Toby retooled from earlier songs
