The elevator pitch for Undertale from the moment the kickstarter began, which I think is safe to say, is that Toby Fox had a thought: Everyone wonders where the random JRPG trash mob is, no one ever asks how it feels to be a JRPG trash mob.
@MrPerson61 Жыл бұрын
I'm glad you decided to listen to these all in a group, they have such similar instrumentation that its best to listen to them all at once. There are tons of Motifs in the song, and as others have pointed out Hopes and Dreams is the first part of the final boss, Save the World is the 2nd part, and Last Goodbye is the credits sequence. I'm pretty sure that all the music is synthetic (? I mean as in using samples, not performed) except the piano segment at the end, hence why you can hear the mic noise during the piano parts, as he actually played that himself and integrated it. Plus the fact that back then he had only the kickstarter money and afaik wasn't extremely wealthy like he is now since the game's popularity and sales. Also if I'm not mistaken he is a completely self-taught musician, no formal training in musical arts, which makes the soundtrack very impressive. The songs on the raw OST do have definite start and ends that are meant for looping the song segments in-game, but the uploader of the video took out the transitions and spliced them together. I myself did that and also tried to eliminate or decrease the mic noise during the piano parts years ago as well just to see if I could with only basic free editing tools lol

Listening to this made me remember why Undertale is such a masterpiece, there are few games out there that actually use the fact that they are games to it's full advantage, stuff like The Last of Us could be a movie and it wouldn't be any different, Undertale can only be a videogame. From the use of the instruments (synth or real, it does makes a difference narratively), to the use of game terminology, HUD, how people even approach a videgame, it's all utilized.

The thing with the game is that there is an optimal way to get the best story, but if you do that then you can lose out on other interesting stuff… Some fans will want you to do one, while others would prefer the other… Depending on if you care more about what the game does or the story or whatever else… It has lots of fun secrets to discover… So this is why people both want you to be blind,but might also want to backseat lol

One of the most fascinating things about this piece really is how it's built up. Undertale has an EXTREMELY strong leitmotif game going for it, so these are all effectively melodies you've heard before in different contexts but this is the first time any of them really go this hard. And yes, there's narrative reasons for that, but even just musically it's a hell of a trip to go on.

This is... a lot like that. A lot of credits sequences do that, too, so it makes sense that's the vibe you got. This song can hit people really hard because the game is good at getting you to connect to the world and to care about its characters, so it can really strike some emotions if you're buying what it's selling. Also, it's really cool how the guitar struck you as out of place, because it fits the context weirdly perfectly.

Undertale is fun. The Fandom is... complex? To be polite? It is one of those games where you wish you could just replay them without memories. That is why nobody wants to spoil anything. Edit: I can maybe add something non spoilerific. The Game itself is held in an Art Style that is to expected with the Midi music, induces a bit nostalgia, but also makes things modern. Toby Fox previously did some earthbound mod`s(? is it called like that if you make your own story with the game? ) I do not know too much about it. Gameplay and narrative in undertale are very ingrained in each other, so it is hard to tell anything without spoiling too much. BUT the game is also not too long, and it is something else.
@AREAlhero Жыл бұрын
To answer your question about mods, mods are an umbrella term that just covers any alteration (or modification, hence the name) to a game (or really any software but lets keep it in a gaming context for now) made by a body outside of the original development team. Other terms that have been used are ROM hacks or just hacks, which mean much the same thing but kind of have a slightly different connotation, since now mods can be made official in some contexts via stuff like Steam Workshop and hacks still kind of embody the original definition of altering a game. Now both these terms cover both full on game sized modifications and smaller things, like fixing a bug present in an original game or changing an image file into another. Because of the coverage of this term being so wide, the modding/hacking scenes more often use the term "fangame" or rarely "mod game" to describe mods or hacks that change an entire game. I first really noticed this shift in culture regarding the readoption of difficult Super Mario World ROM hacks by the Super Mario Maker community calling them fangames (this is most noticeable if you watch any Games Done Quick speedrun of a SMW fangame, where they will call it such rather than a ROM hack or mod). So by that metric, Toby Fox's previous Earthbound project Halloween Hack (despite its name) would be called a fangame since molds an entirely new story out of some elements from the original Earthbound (and other games like Nihon Falcom's Brandish)

@RonTheTryhard Жыл бұрын
I think one of the main reasons why people love the Undertale music as much as they do is because of the sentimental value behind each song. The game is very good at evoking emotion and certain feelings as you play it. So I think people are kind of reliving that emotion they felt during the parts in the game when they listen to each track. The music is also really good on its own, don't get me wrong, but from what you were saying, as a complete outsider who has almost no knowledge of the game, I can totally understand your viewpoint on it all. I myself am a big fighting game nerd by heart and to me going into the game it definitely felt a little weird. But after I played all the way through it, I can say I have a lot of sentiment for the game and the music now and I do appreciate going back and listening to the soundtrack once in a while outside of the game, but I think if I hadn't played through it the music just wouldn't really keep me tied to it like that. I think Undertale is definitely one of those games everyone should experience in their lifetime, and I'm sure you get this all the time from rampant fans, but you definitely should play it at some point--whether in private on your own or on stream or something. Just fair warning though: if you ever do happen to stream it, make sure to ignore chat entirely otherwise you'll get spoiled and/or backseated, and it will ruin your experience with it. Like people all say, you want to play this game completely blind--no backseating, no spoilers, nothing. That's just because the first time playing this game really is something different. I can say that from experience because I was lucky to play it completely blind myself. And playing it again will never fully recapture the feeling I had from playing it through the first time. But watching others play for the first time, it's almost like you can live vicariously in them and experience it all over again. It's why lots of people love watching others play through it on their first go.

IMO, the different components of the OST you can isolate speak perfectly for the context of what is going on in the moment. The almost harsh sounding guitar in the background reminds you of the severity and seriousness of the situation at hand. But the lighter, more whimsical foreground pushes you forward regardless of the adversity. The classic fantasy setting of a great and terrible evil that you combat with the power of love and Determination. Commonly used, but ambiguous enough to allow such diverse variety of said trope. (NyxTheShield created a beautiful remix of the first two songs titled "HOPES and DREAMS Will Save the World," which speaks volumes for all of the context you need)

Some final boss musics are epic orchestra. Some are dark and gloomy. Some are mythical. This is one of the final boss music when the fate of the world lies on your shoulder, and YOU CAN'T LOSE. Edit : 'Hopes and Dreams' is for phase 1 of the final boss, 'Save the World' is for phase 3.(Phase 2 is called 'Burn in dispair' and is some noisy death metallish guitar) So you fight the final boss with everything you got, the boss fight back to break you, but you refuse, and stand back up to save the day. The soundtrack makes more sense if you have played the game and understand the themes. And the reason why it sounds so discordant is because it is both melancholic and triumphant and using leitmotif (mostly the motif of the main theme, so it's a shame you didn't listen to that yet). So, the music is literally going in multiple different directions at the same time with chord progression and melody. I feel like the riffs are the main driving force and it's simply tied together by familiar melodies to maintain a thematic consistency, or more specifically in my opinion: this version shifts the tone of the main theme to give it new life and meaning, the same way a person can gain perspective on trauma and get inspiration out of it in order to heal and move forward. It also represents emotional closure for the characters and the audience since part of it plays during the epilogue. Also, it is multiple songs combined, but they just happen to fit together as a medley and occur in sequence near the end of the game.

This has two of my favorite Undertale songs so I gotta comment on this one. I haven't played Undertale fully myself, I played a little bit but I'm far from the end of the game so I'll just be talking about where these songs take me. First song, it has the motif that's throughout the game. I think it's the main motif but idk; the guitars sound great here. Not too much grit to them but just enough edge, the strings are just really nice here. The melodies here are the kind that I always associate with the Toby Fox, the key change is phenomenal and the whole song makes me think of one word which is determination. I've heard that has something to do with the game but I honestly can't remember atm. I think it goes right into Save the World? Which is just more Hopes and Dreams which I'm always down for. Since it has a lot of the same elements as Last Goodbye I'll save my comments for that song. I gotta say but the really emotional part is really really nice and is just super heart felt. Last Goodbye is just perfection, love the guitars that come right after the piano part. Just awesome, it has an even more hopeful feel than Hopes and Dreams, the ending is emasculate. It is a perfect continuation of Hopes and Dreams. I love all of these songs, Last Goodbye is probably my favorite Undertale song. I still feel like this games soundtrack is Toby Fox's best work.

Undertale is a game that intentionally presents itself as a smaller scale project than it actually is. It restrains itself from using live instruments until the most pivotal moments of the story to catch the player off guard when they happen. It will use midi tunes for scenes with levity, and step up to sampled/synthetic music for scenes that are to evoke a strong feeling, and live instruments only for the most triumphant or dire moments. These "musical surprises" are one of the major factors for why people recommend going into the game without any prior knowledge, and what got such a small time American indie dev hired to work on some of Nintendo's mainline properties like the recent Pokémon games and some other ones, (I want to say he did some animal crossing songs, but I may be misremembering because he also did the entire soundtrack for little town hero, a lousy game with an mazing soundtrack).

the musictracks are good, but the reason they are so popular lies in the game itself. they carry the emotions you will have and upgrade the music in the most beautiful way possible. it is not crazy, if ppl tell you to play the game without get any information about it, because undertale is not just a video game, it is an experience. if you did not play the game until now, you should in the purest form possible. without any influence from others. it is made, that every one who plays the game the first time will have a unique experience nobody else had. just let nobody take away from it

Toby Fox's work on Undertale was heavily influenced by his time on the Homestuck music team. Years in the future, but not many, you will understand the import of that statement.

If you like this composer, Fox also did some of the tracks from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, including the absolutely ethereal Area Zero theme. That game has several great tracks by a few different composers. Another one i suggest from it is the Team Star battle theme. It sounds like a 1990s Capcom game.

The reason people are telling you to not look anything before playing is (apart from spoilers) because it has various endings and some part of the fandom will try to force you to complete one specific ending first, instead of letting you complete the ending you want

Aaaand you have just spoiled a massive part of the game. God we really suck at this.

@@The_True_Mx_Pink where is there a spoiler? The amount of games with several endings is large enough that it isn't a shock when there is several for a game
@The_True_Mx_Pink Жыл бұрын
@@amnesiacapothecary Just learning that your actions can have serious consequences to the point of having several important and vastly different endings is enough to _greatly_ influence the way you play the game. If you want a truely blind experience to the game, sharing information is completely antithetical to the point unless they are getting frustrated without it or they specifically request it.

The unfortunate part.. is that most of these songs have leitmotifs that you won't catch without having experienced the game first. Undertale fans don't understand that the reason the songs hit so hard is the rest of the game forms a backdrop for these tunes. Good songs, but without the other parts of the experience it's more confusing than anything.
