There is one character in particular that stands out, and that's the one known as "goner kid" (looks like monster kid). He talks about that in another universe, he may not exist, and that thought terrifies him. When you bring an umbrella to him, he says something along the lines of "why do you have an umbrella? it's not raining". This quote relates to his other one as rain may not exist here, but "it's raining somewhere else", suggesting that its raining in another universe. Finally, remember he says that the thought of him being non-existent from one universe terrifies him, yet he only appears in a certain number of "universes" each time you play, so his fear has come true.
