On my first run, I killed every boss (except Papyrus) mainly out of frustration because I kept dying whilst trying to spare them. Not only that. Ghosts are incorporeal and can't be hurt or killed, unless they have a physical body they inhabit. Since Alphys is the one who gave him one, it's because of her that it's even possible for him to be killed.

Except Mettaton was the one who went off the rails and attacked you in the first place. Come to think of it, even in Pacifist, Mettaton was kind of a dick. He started out as a good ghost, then he turned into a mindset of "My dreams can't be put on hold for anything" (ACTUALLY SOMETHING HE SAID) and ABANDONED his cousin Napstablook, which is why Napsta is so depressed. Then, he bullied his friend into making a body for him. After the body was made, he barely spoke to her. When she asked him to help her "guide" you, he decided to attack you instead, insulting her multiple times in the process. His only reason for attacking you was so he could take your soul and abandon his audience and the rest of the monsters underground for his own selfish purposes. Even his closing sally in Pacifist was a tribute to his own ego. "Without me, the Underground would lose its spark." I honestly don't know why so many people like this character. He does literally nothing to endear himself to you.

It gets so much worse in the ending if both Mettaton and Undyne are dead. I felt awful. When you put together some dialogue about Alphys that you get from Undyne on the neutral route, there is an *extremely* dark implication behind the fact that no one knows where Alphys is in that ending.

Mettaton's death in this route is really... sad From his perspectuve, he can't me mad that Frisk wants to kill him, he tried to kill them first, so he probably felt that he earned his own murder, that that's what he deserverd for the way he tried to become even more famous. During most of the time we see Metatton, it's all just a funny game, he makes us do puzzles, he dresses as a princess, he makes us dissarm bombs that were probably just jokes, even if some of those did that the intention to kill us, for Mettaton it was probably just a game, he wasn't taking it seriously. But then he has to fight us, and in his battle is where he realizes, "this human is going to kill me, and it's not like I am innocent here". We don't play a long his funny spectacle to rise the raitings, we don't perform in from of him for his audiences. We just kill him for what he has done to us. Or at least that's what would probably come to Mettatons head, in realiry we just kill him for the ending or to see that specific interaction, but for him this is real... And then Alphys, she is probably feeling so horrible after we kill Mettaton, all of this was mostly stuff she planned to look like a hero and be our friend, she built Mettaton(or well, his body), she set up the puzzles, and at the end, she is the one who give us the information on how to damage Mettaton. Basically, not only she must feel so bad because she lost a friend, but also because she is the reason why he was killed, and she can't even blame us because at the end She made the human pass for all of these troubles just to try to become her friend... Despite the Genocide route being the "dark timeline", the Neutral route probably has the most dark and sad narratives, in my opinion

Mettaton's motivation for trying to kill Frisk was almost entirely heroic, no less than Undyne, or arguably even more than her. Asgore has made it clear that once he kills Frisk and takes her soul, he's going to destroy humankind completely. And since Asgore is ridiculously powerful (his ATK and DEF are 80; the only reason Frisk stands a chance is because Asgore is holding himself back out of guilt) there's no reason for Mettaton to think there's any possible result from letting Frisk pass other than human extinction.
