@danielgeronimo55384 ай бұрын
@@metaverse9883That doesn't ruin experience really, it can be argued that when a game is at its most challenging it is the intended difficulty for the game. With some exceptions of course, like WaW's grenade spam on veteran is still bullshit. But this is like playing expert realism even though you're new at a game. In a sense it is one of the intended experiences, but not the one meant for beginners. So it doesn't really ruin anything, it's just not what one would expect on a first run.
@metaverse98834 ай бұрын
@danielgeronimo5538 Sometimes a challenge is too much for the player to the point where it's unfun and frustrating. If there are other difficulty options then it's clear that the player should usually want to choose one that matches their skill level. If it doesn't and goes way over, even if it happens to be the intended experience, it's not as fun and that's what matters the most. If the game is hard but not fun that will definitely ruin your first experience
@danielgeronimo55384 ай бұрын
@@metaverse9883Yeah I get that, but to OPs point what I'm saying is that, there is perhaps two types of intended experience. One for beginners and one for veterans. If it can be summarized by just one line and definition of experience then yeah it is ruined. But the idea that you can choose in the first place and with the recommended starting difficulty for veteran of the genre and newbie for the game technically makes the experience rather valid still. Mayo did not ruin it, he just picked the wrong difficulty to start it with. And tbh games that let you face consequences for choices you made always needs to be respected. Outside of that, the game has problems, but difficulty isn't one of them.

For some reason the idea that the enemies are humans is a lot more horrifying than fighting parasite infested villagers. Mayo's complaint that DMC5 locks away the hardest difficulty setting hits kinda different now that we know he'll ruin a game for himself by picking the hardest difficulty setting plus adding a difficult optional challenge (no checkpoints) on his first playthrough of a game. I feel bad for the developers who seem to have gotten a more negative-focused review than the game deserves. I'm a fan Mayo but this just doesn't feel like your finest moment.
@danielgeronimo55384 ай бұрын
The problem with DMC5 is that it's one of those games that requires you to go through normal first but gives you all of the orbs you need to unlock everything in the game. So the intended progression and experience is ruined from the get go. Everything then becomes a slog and it's a while before you make it to Dante Must Die. RPGs like Diablo gets away with things like this because it doesn't give you immediate XP for you to complete your build on the normal run of the game. If DMC5 doesn't give you the orbs that you need in order to immediately become strong, then it would have worked. The issue of this game is completely different from that. This is more like a new player choosing to play Expert in L4D2 without fundamental understanding what the game would be like except for the fact that it's survival horror. The game has real problems, but it wasn't ruined by difficulty. But a Veteran difficulty is much needed for people who already understand the game, not for those new to it.

You need the flame thrower and medicine to help the medic but you need to go all the way around multiple times if you do not have everything in one go and it's so long. I also agree about chapter 3 , when i first got there i got lost a little trying to work out where to go until i realized the tunnel was the way to go with the pushing of the carts ( which by the way was used only once as far as i remember). Something else that happened to me, i never used the fuel, never got it explained but i guessed it was to burn bodies, but the rats even if they infect you your health does not drop down much and it has a limit of where it drops to, so you can run around infected if you want, my box got too bloated with items on soldier

Rather than being very tightly designed areas, its more akin to what the areas would be like? Not sure. Kind of doubt a significant portion of the maps are not necessary to explore for progression's sake, as that would just make for a mess for players to trudge through.

Your whole ordeal is why I play many games on easy mode nowadays, I used to be a "normal or above or you are just a noob" kind of guy myself but if you play on easy you are basically playing on the difficulty where you can make the most amount of mistakes and get away with it so when that difficulty spike or if a game is way too hard, you are on the difficulty where a first time through awkward checkpoint system or design quirks you don't like is at it's most tolerable. If a game is not very good on the lowest difficulty then it's a bad game period. As for this game, I was probably going to play with checkpoints and unlimited saving on anyway, I get you want that old school survivor horror challenge but not all games are made equal and not all every game in the same genre is as well designed as certain ones. I play so many games now and this might play a big role in why I view games as I do now, but it goes to show that difficulty in video games is just a question that will never ever get a universal answer.

That is a good tip to everybody. As someone who loves to set games to the maximum difficulty because I like to think I'm good at games, I can see why others would do it too, but I f'ing hate inventory management from horror games which aggravates the backtracking (which is also something I f'ing hate), so I set it to the recommended difficulty on day 1. But the atmosphere, pacing and the shooting mechanics are just awesome. Idk why devs in general find it so hard to use this simple method of 1 click to shoot and 1 click to cycle the bolt-action rifle. Last time I've seen this was on Red Orchestra 2. But, everyone has its limits, and I found out Conscript's dev's limit when I asked him to let us reload the bolt-action rifle by holding Mouse2 + pressing R for each bullet we want to insert. This way we get 2 things: more immersiveness through perfect mechanics and you don't get stuck auto reloading all 8 bullets to only stop when you get hit in the face by an enemy. If you're facing this, btw, he said that you can press Esc to cancel the reload and that he is working on some basic mean of fixing this issue.

So you opted to pick the hardest difficulty for your first playthrough and proceed to moan about it being difficult. You must be the brains of the KZbin gaming scene. Give your head a wobble mate.

I'm not moaning about it being too difficult. I'm sharing my experience that I mistakenly put myself through. I thought that would be honest and interesting. I'm very glad the high difficulty exists. Me having trouble with it doesn't mean it's a problem. I just don't want anyone else to negatively impact their experience of this great game.

can you stop misusing "metroidvania"? Metroidvania is about ability gating, not interconnected map
@underthemayo4 ай бұрын
Meh. There's plenty of parts of the map that are "ability gated" because of items you have to find that finally give you access when you return. You don't need to be blowing holes through walls with laser cannons for the map to be Metroidvania style.
@CeceliPS34 ай бұрын
I say the same thing. If the game has a huge map that forces you to backtrack for hours trying to find where to go, my friends and I call it metroidvania.
@surobyk4 ай бұрын
@@CeceliPS3 then you are objectively wrong, I don't know what to tell you
@underthemayo4 ай бұрын
@@surobyk I understand that you're saying "finding the fire extinguisher to put out the fire from hours ago" isn't the same thing as having a new combat/mobility option that now also gives access to an old area. But they're similar enough to not be so strict about the term's use when they create identical thought processes, I think. I also didn't call Conscript a Metroidvania. I called it survival horror that crosses the line into Metroidvania territory and I think that's right. It gets closer to that side of things, without being an outright Metroidvania like Exophobia which I also recently reviewed.
@surobyk4 ай бұрын
@@underthemayo I was actually replying to the other guy and haven't played conscript myself, but I appreciate the answer. And honestly, I didn't just meant this video as an instance of term misuse, but in general. Personally I am trying to not dilute the definition of metroidvania as people started calling dark souls metroidvania when just having an interconnected map isn't specific to any genre. Supplice is a pure boomer shooter with the most interconnected maps I've ever seen, yet nobody would call it MV. I appreciate the honesty, about this and the badly chosen difficulty.

Yeah. And I liked conscript. This isnt a video about complaining it's too hard. It's about showing how I personally screwed up my experience, which I thought was an interesting thing to share to make the video more unique. I'm glad the game is difficult. But I wanted to use my experience as a warning to others not to do what I did, because I want people to enjoy this great game. Is there some stupid response video to this or something?
@liamwilmot77974 ай бұрын
@underthemayo I watch a lot of your stuff and have done for a while now so my feed is usually crawling with response videos 😭 people will like what they like and hate what they hate, I don't really like reaction videos especially to something like an opinion or story about a gaming experience but it's really funny how much people love coming to your comment sections to actively spout how wrong you are about things 😂

I totally agree with you. While I enjoyed very very much this game i thought that it would be much better if it was a bit shorter like 5-6 hours shorter :) By the hour 12 i was like ok I had my fill with this game i dont want to play it anymore but it was still going and going :D Its not bad for people who search for vallue for their money cause on normal difficulty you can easily clock 20 hours in ^^

@@SomeGuy1234XThat only applies to certain games though. Crow Country for instance is way better in hard or The Witcher III being best in Death March, while L4D2 becomes a bit too easy after you've played normal a lot of times.

@@underthemayoIt’s a lot better to start on the safer end and if too easy go up in difficulty. You can do it the other way but you may just get stuck in a mindset that once you learn the mechanics you’ll be fine and only realize you were in over your head 3 chapters in.

Conscript is not "isometric", not even close. It is top down, though
@underthemayo4 ай бұрын
Yeah its too down but it's still got an angle to it, and there are levels that have your running diagonally so it looks a lot more like an isometric experience. Last time I called a game in this style "top down" people said it was isometric. So, dammed if I do damned if I don't.
@MKwadratPodcast4 ай бұрын
I get it, there is a lot of misconceptions around "isometric", despite it having a very strict and established definition. From my experience, when I read something is "isometric" or "cellshaded" it's more often not, than yes. /SimplexPL

This game was far too tedious and long. Didn’t reward thorough exploration. Rats were annoying. Stamina bars in this type of game suck. Special buff items have no room in my inventory for. I’m saying all this before even watching your review. It’s good in art style and thematics but isn’t deserving of all the praise. The dev has said he’ll fix a lot of issues in an update sometime next week. We’ll see. Regardless of the problems I have with it; Its an awesome achievement for one guy to create, and I think that should be celebrated. The game just isn’t a 10 or even a 9 for me. I love classic survival horror but this didn’t scratch the itch as much as I was hyped for it.
