It's a husk of a studio, much like bioware now. Shorty after prey 2017 wrapped up, a lot of the key staff, including the studio founder (Raphael Colantonio), who spearheaded Dishonored and Prey, left arkane studios due to the severe mismanagement by their publisher, Bethesda during prey's development. Him and his team later established an indie studio and made a game called Weird West.

@@Wrekkshoppe I personally really like it. There's gold in that game, but depending on your tastes it might be difficult to get past some of the more questionable decisions. Like I was really put off by the top-down camera and twin-stick shooting, but once you get a feel for it and start learning how to take advantage of stealth and environmental systems the game really opens up. I'd still rather a first-person immersive sim, but I can appreciate that they were trying to do something different. But other than some minor gameplay-related gripes it's a really good game. I like that it kind of just dumps you in the middle of nowhere, in a familiar but definitely bizarre world, then more or less leaves it up to the player to figure out what is going on, who the major factions/entities are, and how each hero's story connects to the overarching plot. Just the concept of building up a character by playing through their story, finding them as the next character, then adding them to your party so you can continue to make use of their skills (along with sharing any information they dug up about what is actually going on) is really cool to me.

@@datatsushi2016 team does play a role but imo vision and leadership plays a greater role. Just look at Fromsoft's dark souls 2. That game did not have miyazaki's involment for the vast majority of its development and the quality of the game speaks for itself. It's significantly worse in just about every aspect to the point where (prior to dlc and patches) it wasn't even considered a good game. Games that are made by just 1 person are widely known btw. Stardew Valley and rimworld are great examples. Not to mention dwarf fortress which is the granddaddy of a whole genre that was made by just 2 dudes. Triple A games have a lot more moving parts and there the team work becomes more important but still at the helm, if there's no good vision for the game and it lacks strong leadership, it ultimately fails at delivering.

There can be objectivity in analyzing a game, but there is almost no such thing as an objectively good, bad, or mediocre game as a whole. Someone might love a game while another hates it, and a third might think it's just ok. That's simply what an opinion is. Remember when the first thing I said was that I personally liked it? That was because I understand that while I enjoyed it enough to see what was great, I can recognize that there are some decisions or flaws that some people might find grating. But either way there's nothing I would call straight-up bad. Now as for the meat and potatoes of your argument - you can't just say "x is poorly implemented therefore game bad". That's neither critique nor analysis, and it isn't even a fully formed opinion. What about it did you not like? Seems to me that using cover to avoid enemies works, like many other stealth games. Seems to me that sneaking up on enemies works, and so does setting traps, skulking on rooftops, climbing through back windows, picking locks, pickpocketing, etc. The game accounts for you using these mechanics despite them often not being the obvious solution. So what about it is poorly implemented? The question you should be asking yourself is "what would I do differently?"

The truth is, almost all of the great people who led games like Dishonored and Prey are no longer at Arcane. It strikes me that many of the things you (and many others) are pointing out are simply placeholders for things that were intended to be fleshed out but never made it. Either that or the rush to release was so hasty that many barely functional systems were shoehorned into place regardless of the consequences. It looks a lot like "I'll just put this here for now and get back to it later" syndrome, or "I don't give a fuck what your opinion is, this mechanism HAS to be done by Friday or don't bother coming in on Monday" syndrome. Such a shame to see another great studio fail.

You know what is even more depressing than Redfall's quality? That Redfall costs 70€ on Steam, while Metal Hellsinger including the(currently one) DLC costs HALF that and sweeps the floor with it. comparing Redfall to Deathloop is the perfect example to compare the current philosophys of both Xbox and Playstation.. both companies hired Arcane to create an exclusive for them.. and while Deathloop wasnt great, it still was basically working at launch, and we'll received overall.. Playstation cared enough about the game, despite it's obvious lesser priority, to get it out the door finished.. Redfall on the other hand, is the perfect game to demonstrate how Xbox feels about exclusives, and has since the 360gen, which was the gen they didn't care about build quality and hardware design so more than half of all 360s red-ringed.. but that's another conversation.. Xbox didn't release a single good exclusive the entire Xbox One generation, and didn't even have a AAA launch title or exclusive for the Series X for an entire year.. it's almost like Xbox knows it's over for them, and if Microsoft didn't own them and keep pumping money into it, Xbox would have been ejected from the market years ago.. it's almost like Xbox is intentionally making shite exclusives, so gamers in general will be gaslit into believing, 'exclusives are bad for gamers' .. and if you believe that, would you really be okay if every Sony exclusive disappeared overnight? I used to like Xbox but I am so sick of their crap, especially when Sony consistently releases decent exclusives.. although, Forbidden West and Ragnarok didn't quite live up to expectations for me, objectively, they're still great games, especially from a technical and graphical standpoint.. and now Xbox owns Bethesda? I mean, Bethesda was already circling the drain (Redfall 76), and got bailed out, imo, the worst purchase/investment in gaming history.. we will see about Starfield, but that game was originally intended to be multiplatform, until Xbox bought them out, desperate for exclusives that people will play based on the fanbase alone.. hey, you gotta respect the evil genius.. just go away already Xbox, you're awful for the industry if youre just going to be wasting resources and talent like you do.. smdh

These corporations want to make games that are stupidly easy to play so that they're more accessible to mainstream casual gamers. Meanwhile all of us seasoned gamers are disappointed. As much as I've enjoyed the Resident Evil Remakes, they've suffered this streamlining in many ways as well. The way Redfall plays now should be easy mode, so they could add in a normal mode for a more engaging experience. Tougher Ai, more layered missions that aren't just fetch quests, etc.

Mayo have you watched any of Whitelight's reviews? The way he applies the concept of intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation in video games directly addresses the issue you have with some games that do not encourage you to do anything but the most boring, ez-win type strategies. Extrinsic motivation is like in Doom Eternal, you're forced to play the fun way (switching weapons and moving fast) because the boring strategy of relying only on the Super Shotgun doesn't work. Intrinsic motivation is like in a fighting game that gives you many flashy and stylish ways to attack enemies, even if using them doesn't actually reward you, you want to do them anyway because they look cool.

I think the first video of yours I watched was a love-letter to a particular game. Vampires having souls depends on the lore--but the lack of a reflection part of the mythology was due to not having a soul.

Since nothing has a "soul", vampires would not have one either, unless the process of making a vampire includes giving them some kind of new component in addition to the brain. If a vampire is a dead body, they would require some strange device that can somehow manipulate that body, such as nanite infused consciousness or perhaps an advanced AI system is operated into them that can replace the dead tissue with unknown technology. So the answer is yes. The vampire must have an updated OS system that can manage what the brain no longer can do, the Soul 1.0 OS, if you will.

Thanks for this.. Honestly Prey is such a good game.. It puts some real respect on the in-sim subgenre, and honestly was an experience that ONLY a video game could do (yes.. the intro). I needed closure on the whole matter of accepting that Arkane truly isn’t the studio it used to be, likely due to key staff leaving, and this helped a lot.

It's really unfortunate to be an Arkane fan right now. Arx Fatalis, Prey, Dark Messiah, dishonored series - i love these games, they're among my favorites. Deathloop was a fumble but that just happens sometimes. Redfall is just sad to see, there's nothing to salvage.

Interesting that you bring up the "die and fight until you win" style of gameplay. Borderlands has always had this type of gameplay, if you're in a fight solo or co-op and you're killed the enemies don't respawn. Ive never had this issue with Borderlands, mainly because you've got options and movement in fights, but also because after death all the enemies fully heal. This forces a reapproach to boss fights especially, since youve got to redo it all again. Plus you lose like 10% of your money upon death, which sucks.

In theory, everything is a matter of opinion. The clothes that we like to wear today may (will) be scoffed at down the road. But there is also craftsmanship. There is good quality, and there is bad quality. Redfall is a shoddy product whether you like it or not.

3 weapon slots is not enough for this game. During my playthrough, I mostly ran a shotgun, stake launcher, and sniper rifle. The only way to take out those mist things was with a UV gun. So I'd have to switch to a UV gun and back to my main 3 constantly if I wanna take those things out. So I just said "fuck it" and just ran through the mist and heal up after.

Whats going on at Bethesda and Xbox? There should be a law that makes it so companies can't hide what it is they are doing. They should be open to investigation and discussion at every stage of development. Not saying we have a right to know, we as in the buyer, but someone has to know what the hell is going on in there at all times, and be able to explain the what why and how of it all because sitting here and having the entire industry scratch their heads at Redfall's existence is a horrific look for anyone in any creative industry. Most people aren't even giving Redfall a chance, and for AAA first party exclusive, thats embarrassing!

This game reminds me of Star Craft 2 when it came out for PC. I spent over 50 dollars for the game (at that time) when it was released only to find out I needed to have an active ethernet connection and login into battlenet to play CAMPAIGN. That alone turned me off from SC forever even though I was an avid fan of the franchise who logged in thousands of hours with a respectable online record. That is the last time I bought a game from Blizzard and I am not missing anything.

I wrote off this game from the very beginning. It's such a shame, as I love all the Dishonored games and DLC, and of course Prey. I enjoyed Deathloop at the time but its looter-shooter mechanics really put me off, and I don't really want to play the game again. Arkane used to make the kinds of games we basically never saw anywhere else, but these past two games feel very much like trend-chasing. So unfortunate. Oh *AND* the game is $120 on Steam in Australia. $165 for the "Bite Back Edition".
