So much great, useful info ! In Dec. 2004, Ohio had a massive ice storm that shut down most of the state. We had never experienced anything like it....not even close!....in our entire lives. We had no power, no heat for a week. We survived by huddling in our small kitchen , using our gas stove for heat just during the day. All businesses were shut down. Nothing could operate. It was incredible.....& I hope to NEVER go thru an ice storm again.

I too started my prepper journey with trying to keep my critical sump pump opperating during a power outage many years ago. Started out with a 12v marine bilge pump with a cord modified to clip onto our car battery. Now have a true sinewave inverter and a small gas generator, while the latest iteration is untested under fire, they will serve us well. I love the inverters because the car running draws way less attention than a noisy generator and the car will idle for days on a full tank, providing limited power. In recent years it kept our two fridges and one freezer going during a 4 day power outage caused by a summer storm.

@larryware12 жыл бұрын
I'd say not. Kerosene is $3.99/gal here in Peoria. A gallon will last about 3 days if heating exclusively from the heater. Electricity is definitely cheaper, but if the power is out, kerosene is a great substitute.

It’s these Mr Heaters, what are you going to do about the fuel prices and difficulty getting propane because of price & supply? Again the same with kerosene?

Mr Heater makes a larger gas heater (30,000 btu) that can be mounted permanently or free standing. I have have one that's natural gas and it's located in the middle of my house and provides some serious heat during power outages or to supplement my furnace. It does have an electric fan but isn't needed to operate. I don't have to mess with kerosene it just sits there ready to go to work when needed. They also make a propane model and both have low oxygen shut-offs. You mentioned that you store your kerosene in your garage. Kerosene has a higher flash point than gasoline but it should still be stored in a shed away from the house. You might want to mention to only run your generator during daylight hours when there's a long term power outage. People steal generators and one running at night can be heard a mile away. I keep mine chained to my truck when it's running and at night it goes in the shed. I also run it on ethanol free gasoline (bought at co-op) and I use Stabil gas additive so my fuel doesn't go bad. Shelf life without this is 6 months and with it is 2 years. You mentioned the AGM battery charges at a lower voltage compared to an automotive flooded acid battery. They actually charge at a higher rate (14.6v) than a car battery (13.8v). Remember that one is none and two is one. Always have a backup plan for your backup plan.

Larry, I see kerosene heaters like yours all the time on marketplace for cheap, but buying clear K1 at lowes or home depot is very expensive - $10/gallon right now! When you buy K1 at a gas station, does it come with the red dye and if so, do you notice a difference in how cleanly it burns? I'm really enticed at the prospect of getting one cheap indoor-use dynaglow that can heat up to 1000 sq ft for emergencies, but I want to make sure I can use the dyed kerosene from the local fill-up without (excessively) stinking up my house.

My dad in the 80's had a truck that ran on both gasoline & propane, it was very safe, but he had to run the gas to keep hoses from drying out on occasion.

Thank you for these videos. They are very informative and so helpful. We have learned a lot from you guys. We live in Nevada and it gets very very hot here in the summer. I am worried if the power goes out or the grid goes down what we can do. Sometimes in the summer it can be a 110 or a 115 easily outside. Do you have any ideas or advice for those of us that live in warmer climates that will help us not roast to death if it's boiling outside? Moving away is not an option lol.

Hi Marianne. I can only say that Hope and I both grew up without air conditioning. We used fans at our house to cope with the heat. During the boiling hot summer of 1936 both of my parents lived on farms. During the hottest nights they actually slept outside on the porches. Certainly drinking a lot of liquids and dressing cool will help, but Hope and I really don't have any personal experience with super hot climates. What I would recommend is a back-up generator that is big enough to run your AC. Or, if you can't do that, get a room air conditioner (5000 BTU) that can cool a room that can be run from a smaller generator. I would do a search on KZbin for other recommendations. I'm sure many have addressed this issue. Thank you for you kind comments - Larry.

Solar. You have an abundance of sun power. Old folks used to wet down large towels and hang them on screen doors. Air coming thru the screen and towel helped with cooling.

Recent subscriber and I love your channel. Could you link your video about setting up solar panels? I searched for it but can't find it. Would love to watch it as we are setting up some now.

The link to the sine converter goes to the little red one you showed. Is there a link to the larger blue one you have in the video?

I found a cheaper Samlex SSW-350 (that's the brand I have) at the Alt E store. Do a search for that model. They have that one for $116.60 right now. That's a lot cheaper than the Samlex PST-300-12 that I have (which is $180.00.)
