I have been fishing @ Tippy Dam since the early 70's, my parents were avid fishermen, I love that place it's AMAZING when the Salmon run, me and my son have been there, I am going back this year, LOVE THE SALMON RUN!! I also go to Little Manistee, I have to say though, the Salmon back from 70's thru 90' were slot bigger, ALOT!!! We used to bring the salmon to the DNR filet stations from the boats, we would drag them they were soooooo heavy, just 3 of them to a stringer, and the filet station was free, as long as you was willing to give up the liquid gold, ( eggs) we got paid per trip, as kids we made out just dragging some fish

Awesome footage! I was just there for a steelhead clinic with the DNR and even tho I didn't catch anything I had a lot of fun and learned a lot as well. They said that this week was the first run so the numbers are pretty small. I'll be going back in a couple week with lots of bait and a cooler...yeah buddy

Thanks for watching Dan, Caution, Go Pro can be addictive. Snorkel style, I like getting in the water with camera on short pole for good close up shots, but in Tippy current I waded out with a long pole also. Yes I simply start the camera and let it run, while enjoying underwater view I try to get unique or action shots. That's the thing anyone can do it. It's amazing how close you can get to fish. Then the fun part editing! no I'm serious! I love amateur 101 editing, also something most can do

All pics at dam were taken on the stair side from cable to falls, other pics down river and little Manistee.

Up by the cable out only twenty feet or so, rocks dropped off quick, that's where close up of trout and brown was caught. down by the falls only two feet away from wall I could wade out further so about forty feet from shore, looked like six to eight feet deep. If water was still like a pond you could probably see the fish from shore.

And I was going to ask him what he was using, well it looked like a small fly or hook and he had a jar of bright or fluorescent bait that he would get five or more cast before replacing, scraps on ground where piling up. He did release the fish.

you spelled "shinook" wrong it is Chinook, and steelhead are not salmon, they are a trout that has access to the ocean. so it should be Chinook- Coho- salmon and stealhead trout. by the way great video. I am an avid 14 year old ocean fishermen.

the end where the brown trout is being reeled in and BLEEDING ALOT from his gills just shows that the tackle was waaaay to big for that fish. I don't understand why people keep browns, and go barbless, cmon

Won't be long and Lake Michigan will end up a dead sea like Lake Huron. I'm from the east side of the state and the days of catching chinook are long gone. From what I understand Lake Michigan is set to crash also. Just in time for the jumping carp so the lakes can become giant carp ponds. I read that Kentucky Lake has a school of jumping carp over a mile wide. I can only imagine how many can grow in the great lakes. I remember the good old days fishing the St Clair River in the early 2000's. My buddy and I caught 50 walleye in 4 hours. Now we're lucky if they can get 5 each. The great lakes are being decimated by invasive species not to mention the pollution. The algae blooms on Lake St Clair in the summer suck all of the oxygen out of the water. They had to close the beach 5 times this year because of the raw shit I mean e coli being pumped into the lake.

wantsome480 Well not quite, yes the Asian carp is an issue but they are rebuilding the electric wall that holds them back and 2, lake Michigan is now seeing natural reproduction, an increase in bait fish etc. Also this year as of 2017 is said to be one of the best years for fishing in quite a while (I know personally). So if anything, lake Michigan is actually growing. Not saying you are wrong though.

Seems to be some confusion on where these videos were taken. I live and fish here every day. Many prob reconize my photo. I can clarify easily. The parts where u see salmon everywhere in rocky bottom shallow/fast water is most certainly not Big Manistee at tippy dam. In fact it is the weir on the Little Manistee located in Stonach off Old Stronach Road. At the intersection of Stronach and Old Stronach Road there is a sign "Little Manistee River Weir" with an arrow pointing. Its about 1.5 miles down Old Stronach Road. NOW some of this video where u see slow/deep water (espec with all the small trout and zebra muscles on bottom) is the Big Manistee at Tippy. The salmon at the weir stack up on top of each other as shown in this video every year shortly after they close the gates norm around labor day. Sometimes by the hundreds even thousands. It is a hatchery. Great video. Hope this helps to the confusion.

Yes snowsic u did include Little Manistee River in Title. But never the less there seems to be lots of confusion here at Tippy Dam. I've had many many many people from all over the state and from out of state tell me "I'm here fishing for salmon. Saw a video on youtube with so many salmon that u could walk over them." They just didnt know that the part of that video where there were many salmon with the shallow fast water was indeed the Little Manistee River. Not Big Manistee River. Just been seeing a major influx of disappointed salmon fisherman here at Tippy Dam thinking they were coming to that exact spot with all those fish when in fact they were not even at the correct river. Yes there are salmon at Tippy Dam. But not nearly as stacked up on each other like the part of ur video, that u filmed at the Little Manistee River after they closed the gates at the weir/hatchery. And u cant fish within the hatchery 500ft. So just as long as the fisherman watching this dont get their hopes up, spend hundreds if not thousands to come fish here and then be disappointed. Again I love this video. Best video on youtube in my opinion. Just been alot of confused fisherman up here.
