Then... Choose a newfound sense of dignity. Choose when to drink Choose your friends Choose when to tell your past to fuck itself. Choose when to embrace the sun. Choose when to live your life on YOUR terms Choose when to embrace yourself Choose when to look at a mirror with hope. Choose when to smile, and learn, and love. Later, way later I realized how beautiful this film is, about lost innocence, friendships in hard times, fragility of young adults, lonliness, empty life, (lack of) will power. Unforgetable!!!

About five years clean here. Those like us are eternally broken somewhere inside but we still draw breath, we still love and we still hate. That is more than I can say for my friends who succumbed to the warm, soft clutches of lady H. They will never again know the sight of a sunrise or dew on morning grass. But we will. So we owe it to them, the tragically lost, to fix our brokeness and live the lives they were robbed of. Ryan, Chris, Gabe, and all the rest. I'm sorry I haven't lived my life fully, but I hope the living I have done is enough.

Trainspotting is a movie that only a true heroin junkie can appreciate and understand, I know it has a profound effect on those who can relate when they watch it for the 3rd or 4th time because you've lived it, everytime you watch it you'll see it in a different way years later you'll see something you didn't see before, sometimes I can't believe I'm still alive after all these years, I'm almost 63 now and I look back at all the friends family and aquantinces that are dead but live on in my heart and memory, I'll never forget them and those days as long as I live, to those who have a good idea of what I'm saying I hope you're doing ok and living a good life and not dwelling on the past and people you loved and lost, PEACE.

Several years ago, I was in a very similar situation like Renton. Drugs, Booze, Hookers and F*cked Up friends who would force me into these things. Whenever I hear this song it reminds me of a glimmer of hope, running towards freedom. Specially for the young people stuck in some dark places. Peace!

This film is the best antidrug tool
@Albanez395 жыл бұрын
It's not an antidrug film, believe me :)
@trickydick29095 жыл бұрын
@@Albanez39 Actually yes it is. It does seem to glamorize drug use at first glance, but if you actually pay attention, the message is the fact that heroin is so dangerous precisely because it is so great. This makes it so much more persuasive than most other movies about this topic that usually boil down to use drugs>become prostitute>die. The undeniable appeal of heroin is what drives people to keep doing it. Heroin is fucking great until the day you wake up and realize that no matter how much you use it's not enough. Showing the real, legitimate reasons why people use in the first place is exactly what makes Trainspotting an effective anti-drug movie.
@Albanez395 жыл бұрын
@@trickydick2909 You've never taken anything except alcohol and caffeine, right? The film's message is not about drugs, it's about money and modern society. It's a critique to these two to be exact... And this is promptly communicated by the opening and closing sequences of the "Choose Life" speech. It clearly explains how our shallow and whining minds try to entertain themselves with useless products, luxury and comfort, without ever finding the necessary satisfaction to lead a happy and fulfilled life. An ex drug addict, or just drug user/experimenter, is aware of this flaw, and doesn't indulge in such behaviour. Reasons? Who needs reasons when you've got heroin? Drug addiction is more common than you can imagine. We are all addicted to our work, or hobby, videogames, sex, music, lies, food and so on. It's a primal behaviour explained by philosophers thousands of years ago. It's called gluttony, and it's not just about food. When Renton finally steals the money, he is aware of the power and freedom that it guarantees. He decides to stop using heroin in a bat of an eye and keeps on smiling, walking and explaining what he's about to embark in. The film both glamorizes and demonizes heroin. Looking at select scenes of the film, you will become curious or disgusted by the effects it has on your psyche and social life. But the final and integral meaning of the film has nothing to do with heroin and drugs :)
@freya11365 жыл бұрын
Tricky Dick completely agree for example when he ODs on heroin later on in the film it shows the calming sinking feeling he feels and how he’s enjoying it, glamourising it but when you see how he’s dragged to taxi to a hospital instead of an ambulance being called, left lying outside the hospital by the taxi driver and carried through the hospital through the a&e with everyone watching in disgust as if to say ‘Another junkie’ it shows how it’s not glamorous at all and shows the complete lack of dignity in that moment. Another example is when the baby in the film dies from cot death whilst they’re all off their heads they didn’t even realise till later

Karl Hyde said: "We used to go out drinking in Soho and I ended up in the Ship on Wardour Street. All the lyrics were written on that night. A drunk sees the world in fragments and I wanted to recreate that. I was inspired by Lou Reed's New York album and Sam Shepard's Motel Chronicles. I was into flash photography as well, so I was walking around Soho with a notebook and camera, just observing things. In those days I'd open the book whenever a musical idea inspired me. Rick [Smith] came up with a rhythm and I started singing over it. The vocals were done in one take. When I lost my place, I'd repeat the same line; that's why it goes, 'lager, lager, lager, lager.' The first time we played it live, people raised their lager cans and I was horrified because I was still deep into alcoholism. It was never meant to be a drinking anthem; it was a cry for help. Now I don't mind. Why Born Slippy? It was a greyhound we won money on

First time I watched this film when I was 19. I was pretty young shocked by it(in the good way). Brilliant and impressive movie, brilliant ending of the story, intelligent directing. I am glad to know it is going to do the sequel after so many many years. Love the soundtrack very much. Every time when I hear this song just reminds me the good time of 90' films. Trainspotting always be the classic one in 90'. Looking forward for the sequel.

The washing machine, the car, the compact disc and electrical tin opener, good health, low cholesterol, dental insurance, mortgage, starter home, leisure wear, luggage, three piece suite, DIY, game shows, junk food, children, walks in the park, nine to five, good at golf, washing the car, choice of sweaters, family Christmas, indexed pension, tax exemption, clearing gutters, getting by, looking ahead, the day you die.

It was at the time , maybe the funniest dark humour flic I had ever seen.The casting,cuts,direction,camera work were all meant for it to be so.It was not, nor ever came close to,... the pain and reality of the lives of true heroin addicts. I can still remember exactly who took me to see this film,I have seen it many times in different languages since.Studied the screenplay to improve my English. The 20 yr Trainspotting 2 is in the works. I am not expecting much. I have changed,the world has changed, but if anyone could pull it off,it would be that great cast and director,all of whom were dedicated to their crafts,and alive and well today.My favorite actor of the bunch was, and still remains, Robert Carlyle.But they were all good.
@NellSmith7 жыл бұрын
Don't forget the author. You're actually looking at the brilliance of Irvine Welsh, who WROTE Trainspotting. You probably know that, but still: many people don't even KNOW it was a book first. And better than the film... although the film was very good indeed, of course. But couldn't even exist without the book. Cf: Lord of the Rings.
@justcallmeassinine7 жыл бұрын
Nell Smith There are some very good recent interviews with Irvine Welsh on YT. He lives in Chicago.
@trickydick29095 жыл бұрын
@@NellSmith I thought it was actually a very faithful adaptation. Of course, the book gives you much more insight into the supporting characters as well as characters that don't appear in the movie or were made into composites to suit the film. But overall, I think it was one of the better book to movie adaptations I've seen. Much of the dialogue was lifted directly from the book. I also love Robert Carlyle. He was great in The Full Monty as well.
