Having cemented their place in the ’90s underground techno scene, the group’s definitive breakthrough came in 1996 when their timeless anthem ‘Born Slippy (Nuxx)’ became the soundtrack of a generation after it was featured in the film Trainspotting. The success of that single catapulted the band from the underground into the heart of the mainstream.
The following two decades saw them build on that success while never compromising; selling millions of albums, performing countless sold-out shows, providing scores to productions by Academy Award winning directors Anthony Minghella and Danny Boyle, exhibiting in galleries, and sound-tracking the Opening Ceremony to the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The critical and commercial success of the band’s Grammy nominated 2016 album ‘Barbara Barbara, we face a shining future’ saw them headline stages at Coachella, Glastonbury and Summer Sonic.

@Underworld I lived in northern Thailand back in the late 90s and on a weekend we would hit a particular well-known ChiangMai niteclub where the beats was fresh and the vibes was chillin'. What was lacking tho was a bit of Underworld. So, one Saturday nite I approached the d.j. booth with a well-travelled copy of Beaucoup Fish in hand. I asked, implored, cajoled the dudes to play Jumbo. They wouldn't. Then I wore them down. They grudgingly assented, probably thinking, ah, just some farang music .... Well, of course, within 60seconds that joint was jumpin', smiles a mile wide, prejudice shot down in flames. We all won. Super 🌼

I've already made a slightly frivolous comment about a year ago, but I re-listened to this lovely song just five minutes ago and I'd like to add: I used to live in Brighton, England, and our building was just near the beach, and every morning I had the privilege of walking to work along the seafront. Vast skies, the coast of France visible across the channel, seagulls, the scent of ozone and seaweed, the crash of waves on shingle, and in my headphones... this. God I was so happy! Thank you Underworld.

Ethereal yet tightly structured and intense. Definitely music for left-right brain people who need creativity and structure. They made this song exactly the way I've always dreamed of making music. They blend the unfamiliar with the familiar with those weird ringing and click sounds built over that, should be overly repetitive bass line, and the whole thing works like magic with the bass line slowly pushing you to a higher place. For me personally, the feeling of a door opening (from council flat hell) into a vast other world and finding a sage under a tree is what it feels like to let go of all the pain and transport yourself to another place to live a bigger, uninhibited, version of yourself. This song represents the peak of the progressive house era (like the Pink Floyd of house) before it became drum and bass and the mindless cacophony of toilet rumblings that electronic dance music has mainly become. Revive this era of music - it was the best thing to come out of the 90s along with Sasha/Digweed! I'm no psychologist, but I wonder how much this song was a result of Karl's struggle with alcoholism and wanting to escape something dark. Thank you!
