1:42 the pilot aligned with the taxiway as he thought that was run 28R because he was at that airport many times and runway 28L was shut down for maintenance, meaning the runway light were turned off. the pilot though run 28R was 28L and mistook the taxiway for 28R. along with an unhealthy dose of human error the air Canada flight and the second plane in queue went within ~10 feet of eachother.

Thank you for the explanation. I was wondering why 3 or 4 planes would be lined up like that in the middle/end of a runway. Undertow and waves were pretty harsh, but I suppose I knew it was up to me to get out before high tide; sun was setting soon. Crazy experience. Jacked up my ankle SUPER badly, lots of skin was shredded by rocks (yet "cleaned" by salt water), and lost my glasses. Harrowing experience, but I kept my wits about me. 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨

#6 linseed oil. Often used for it's plastic-like coating which waterproofs. Its very cheap and very flammable while curing. So volatile it can self-ignite from wind blowing across it's surface.
@jason3421
@jason3421 Жыл бұрын
I learned in a building trades class I took that you never use compressed air to clean spilled oil because the rush of oxygen could touch it off. With that in mind, your suggestion seems very plausible. Talk about a freak accident! Wow!
@elilla331
@elilla331 Жыл бұрын
@@jason3421You got good advice. We use linseed oil a lot around the farm for curing the wooden part of tools. Even the rags can self-combust in a closed container, stuff is crazy exothermic. But humanity has been using it since antiquity because it's just so good.
@rick5078
@rick5078 Жыл бұрын
was about to say the same. Boiled linseed oil is indeed the most likely culprit. Maybe they used a rag to protect the furniture from getting marred by the straps but forgot the rag had boiled linseed oil on it. Rags allow the wind to pass through it, exposing a larger surface area to the wind causing it to dry very fast, triggering the spontaneous combustion of the boiled linseed oil. That is also why it is always recommended to leave the soaked rags in a fire proof container, far away from flammable materials so that if the rags spontaneously combust, they can burn safely without risk of igniting anything else.

Ah. That explains what happened when l worked at a wee art-house cinema a few years ago. The woodworking shop that backed onto the cinema had been closed for hours when we had to evacuate cos of a fire starting in some rags they were using to polish their wooden rocking horses.
@elilla331
@elilla331 Жыл бұрын
@@nikiTricoteuse Yep. Lot of the stuff we use in woodworking whether it's stain, linseed oil, shellac, or varnish, durathane/urethane/etc., can all self-combust. Always toss your rags into a burn bucket just in case. When I was in grade 6 I think, we had woodshop and the old fellow there showed us kids just how easily it could happen by tossing three rags into a bucket at the start of class then walking away. At the end of class 55 minutes later, the rags had started smoldering all on their own. Very ingenious way to teach all of us, and that memory is still clear to this day almost 35 years later. Sadly most schools even middle schools here in Canada have long since gutted anything vocational like that. Our kids learned it because we home school, the neighbors kids who are the same age, they haven't even learned home finance in grade 7.

I like to think this is a glass half full/half empty situation, mixed with a little mis-education, Backwards thinking, and that "Hell no, I aint gone done nothing to nobody" thing that some people do when trying to deny something, (That the only thing that goes through their mind s that they're trying to say "No" so they put no EVERYWHERE.. and the sentence that follows is a double negative, triple negative, and the rare Quadruple negative sentences). You're suppose to be pessimist if you're thinking that a glass is half empty, and it's running out. An Optimist if you say it's half full, still half left. Ideally, You'd want to say "Look, the plane nearly hit!" optimist-tone because you're glad they didn't hit. and You're happy that the glass isn't emptying all over the streets with flying corpses and jet engine parts. but what tends to happen is that the average Joe in the streets would say "Look, the plane nearly hit!" in an excited manner, and his friend standing next to him would say "Why are you excited? Did you want them to hit?" Yes. Because I want to live in a world where Tim Burton is God, and the creator of all things. So what happens, or has happened, is somebody, somewhere sat around a table with a bunch of friends and discussed at length what, and how, people should refer to planes nearly hitting. and one person ejaculated with excitement, and was immediately kicked out of the room for public indecency. and another guy exclaimed "Hey, Why don't we just not say the word 'hit', Let's not conjure up the image of the planes hitting, Avoid using "hit" altogether and we'll refer to any planes that nearly hit and a "near miss". and everybody else agreed. and that's that. 0:36 You didn't show the "near miss" of the airplanes. My question is, *whose error caused the plane to attempt landing on the wrong runway?* A mistake made by the pilot would be immediately reported to the NTSB because airport would want to clear their names of the error because airports have their own scoring systems. If it took 24 hours before *anyone* notified them, this implies that air traffic control was in the wrong. Traffic would never wait before reporting such a mistake unless they *needed* the Blackbox recording to overwrite itself.

Plus that measurement for how low the plane came is only measuring from the bottom of the plane and doesn't include the landing gear, which would've been down as it was landing. The point here is that it came more than low enough to hit another plane.

If you leave it too late not only are you putting your life on the line but you can cause extreme inconvenience and damage to firefighters/trucks, with the thick smoke neither of you can see very far and it can cause a major accident, it’s better to leave extremely early then too late. 🙁 There is a reason our fire season slogan is “PREPARE. First rule of living in the southwest- at least have a go bag for emergencies just like this! The first one is wrong, it was not on a runway, they were about to land on the taxiway, the taxiway is NOT a runway. Its like saying a car was driving on the wrong road when infact it was driving on the footpath. A footpath and a road are 2 totally different things.

That ‘wrong runways story being the closest near mis of the decade is wrong, I was on a a flight where they accidentally had 2 planes taking off that would have collided had 1 of the planes (the plane I was on) had not put the brakes on just before the wheels lifted off, everyone slammed forward (thank god we all were wearing our seatbelts) the had to go around and then we say for 30 mins so the pilot could calm down, it was a red eye flight from Atlanta to Hawaii, Hawaiian airlines flight. The pilot literally said “thank god we were able to stop!” Then nothing else for that 30 mins and only then did they tell us what had almost happened, that they had the two planes taking off in a way where if we had taken off we would have slammed into the other planes side, like T boned them? I believe is what it’s called.

That Air Canada airplane flew its final toward a taxiway, it wasn't even a runway! The pilots ignored multiple clues: (1) They weren't on the ILS beam. (2) Runway lights are white, taxiway lights are blue. (3) There were 4 airplanes sitting on the approach end of the "runway".

It is illegal to allow the cockpit voice and flight data recorders to continue recording post incident. The pilot should have pulled the circuit breakers on both to stop the recorders.

@@mikeh8228 So true! NTSB does note whether the pilot flying follows its rules and that fact appears in their final report.

8:12 - "We're not sure what caused the fire, but we can take a guess..." Really? Wet paint? That's your best guess? 9:41 - "The clip ends with a plane flying overhead. They were either evacuating or spraying the ground with flame retardant." Right, because there are neighborhood planes that take off from the streets to evacuate the residents. Do you guys actually think before writing the copy for these videos?

The CVR of the pilots in the planes that were on the ground is available on YT. It was actually another pilot that alerted Air Traffic Control the Canadian plane was coming in on the wrong runway.
