Couple interesting notes about the Fairy: - Flight works with heavy armor (it's magical and doesn't require wings) - Flight works in wild shape (same reason) - Fey Passage has no size limitations, so you could fit through 1-inch spaces while huge size (moon druid or rune knight fighter)
@NotYourAverageNothing3 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard claims that the Owlfolk’s flight works in Wild Shape too because it’s technically not a numerical speed, preventing it from being “overwritten” by whatever you change into. Plus it’s a racial feature. Not sure I agree with it though, because the relevant rule in Wild Shape includes, “if the new form is physically capable of doing so.”
@sillvvasensei3 жыл бұрын
@@NotYourAverageNothing Owlfolk flight relies on the wings though, and is not magical in nature. Therefore, being physical in nature, you lose the ability if you lose the wings. That's my understanding. "You retain the benefit of any features from your class, race, or other source and can use them if the new form is PHYSICALLY capable of doing so."

I really want fairies to be tiny sized, it would create an interesting exception and would make sense. -But I could see it as immersion breaking when a tiny creature can deal as much damage with its weapons as a quasi-large one -especially with the newfound aversion to stat penalties. Maybe a built in weapon attack debuff vs bigger creatures, like not adding their ability modifier to the damage rolls of weapon attacks and unarmed strikes to creatures 2 sizes or more larger than them? -then maybe compensate with fey ancestry or magic save advantage.
@jimmybob78733 жыл бұрын
My solution would be to simply halve the tiny-sized weapon's damage dice before adding the modifiers. For example, if a Tiny creature hits with a tiny-sized mace and then rolls a 6 on the d6, the damage roll is halved to 3 before adding the creature's strength modifier to the total. Also, I'd rule that Tiny creatures can't effectively wield Heavy and Reach weapons (though they could still be used as improvised weapons in a pinch), as well as imposing disadvantage on attack rolls made with normal-sized weapons that aren't Light.
@elliotbryant34593 жыл бұрын
@@jimmybob7873 ya, most reach weapons are at disadvantage for small or smaller creatures due to the heavy property so that makes sense. -but a tiny fairy riding a fire beetle wielding a normal reach lance [which lacks the heavy property] seemed absurd haha. -I feel wielding a reach whip might be fine though. -This is under the notion that they are using either non-magical weapons sized for their race and that magical items adjust to the wielders size. -Alternatively, there is always faeries traditional fear of/aversion to iron -which could be consolidated as metal objects [like how druids refuse to wear metal armor]. give them disadvantage to everything while wearing/wielding metal, or a charisma or constitution save to avoid the poisoned condition? Could throw them a bone and give them the shillelagh cantrip to compensate. -this is looking more extreme than a mere stat penalties though, lol.

When I've first seen the fairy, them being small, being able to hover, and being able to squeeze through 1-inch spaces despite their size, I immediately thought about playing them as small hovering fey slimes instead of the traditional pixie- or sprite-like humanoid with wings. I've seen people saying that not making Fairy Tiny is a flavor fail, but in my opinion, it does create a uniquely D&D 5e version of the concept far separate from the sprite and the pixie found in the moster manual (which you can play as anyway using the sidekick rules in Tasha's cauldron). Flying glittering fairy slimes for the win, even if it is slightly terrifying! :D

I'm super happy they are considering more fey-themed stuff, but overall I was disappointed with this UA. I'm fine with the lineage rules and not defining stereotypical racial stats unlike some. I think I'm smart enough I can infer what the generic stats would be. But what disappointed me about this UA was two of the races can fly, which is an auto-ban from my games and the third is just a fey-flavored hobgoblin (boring). The only neat thing is I guess the fact we can have bunny people now which need some serious rebalancing. Until they fix it officially, I'll be house ruling that instead of jumping 1-12 feet, they jump 5 ft if they roll odds and 10ft if they roll evens on the d12 roll because apparently wotc forgot grids go in increments of 5 feet. Ill also be changing the hare-trigger ability if not outright eliminating it. maybe I'll like these things more when they release a book with lore to go alongside it all. maybe ill also downgrade the fairy's flying to simply hovering. I also think they should have the option between being a small and medium creature, but the squeeze through 1 inch spaces thing also leaves a bad taste.
