Absolutely marvellous. It hasn't changed has it? My son has done the trooping twice. What a wonderful tradition. I wonder how many of these soldiers died in WW2.

My wife’s grandfather paraded with the whole 2nd Canadian Division for King George V in 1915 before they left the UK for France. He was with the 31st Bn CEF (Alberta).

The drill movements are different to today, they do not raise their legas parallel with the ground, all the guards are of a simular height. There are a lot more guards on parade.

?? Considering that they did away with height restrictions some years ago, that is puzzling to read. Their heights are divergent now. They were far more equally tall then.

strange to see how much the foot drill has changed since this was filmed, the arms are swung only waist high and the knee is only half bent unlike todays guards drill. the arm is swung shoulder high and the knee is always bent with the thigh being parallel to the ground before the foot is driven down to the ground in a smart and solider like manor. up the micks

On a sidenote, the Roman(!) Empire DID in fact strike back when during the Year of the Four Emperors, in 69AD, Civil War broke out in Rome. While the Romans were fighting each other in Italy, they had withdrawn many legions from the Rhine, leaving the frontier dangerously exposed. The Germanic tribes (Batavians) used this opportunity and massacred the Roman garrison at Vetera and proceeded to burn and loot the Roman towns and forts along the Rhine. When Vespasian had consolidated his power, he send nine legions over the alps, reclaimed everything for Rome, avenged the garrison at Vetera and rebuild all Roman military installations with stone.

Yes, It is called “Figaro” and is the slow March of the Coldstream Guards, the regiment i hope to one day join. Mozart presented the regiment with the piece and i think he was even inspired by watching a changing of the guard as a young boy.

The drill and standard today is not on a par.
@king_goose
@king_goose 5 ай бұрын
You must remember though that back in those days, The Coldstream, Grenadier and Scots guards all had 3 Battalions, the Welsh and Irish guards having 2 (i think) and they were full sized battalions, of 700-1000, not these “Battalions” we have today that are 400-500 strong. Now each regiment has only 1 battalion and 1 company to do all their war fighting and ceremonial duties, whereas back then they had 2/3 whole full sized battalions, they could dedicate an entire one too doing drill all day everyday for a period, whilst the other 2 could be on infantry duties, the army was also much bigger so could fill in for infantry duties, whereas the guard now form a quarter of our infantry regiments, and a sixth of our infantry battalions, so the army is thinly stretched and they just cannot dedicate a large number of soldiers to just drill for extended periods of time like back then, and considering this, they do extremely well.

Both the UK and Germany have great military traditions, uniforms and marches. I honestly prefer more traditonal uniforms (such as the British Household Division's uniforms) for ceremonial purposes.
