Yes it is totally ethical to take advantage of a business marketing ploy to get you to sample your product. You sampled, you left. Totally reasonable. Sometimes you might want to keep the subscription, if it has value to you. I keep a calendar with cancel dates, account number, and phone numbers because this information can be difficult to find when needed.

Recent wins: 1. I called around to find better home insurance and went from $1500/year to $1000/year. 2. I cancelled my TV and got my internet reduced by 50% to $35/month just by asking. 3. Switched phone companies. I'm still paying the same rate but I now have some data. 4. Kept talking to different people to try refinance my mortgage. I got 3 NOs and 1 maybe so I'm running with that. It's a little unethical. I do a blend and extend with my bank to try get out of the 16k payout penalty. Then 🤞 the penalty reduces to 3 months interest for a little while. If it does, I'm going to switch banks. If this works, I'll have some extra money to put to my student loan every month.

BG - I keep a 2-pages-per-month generic planner right next to my computer where I see it multiple times each day. If I sign up for something free, I mark on the block for the DAY BEFORE expiration, "last day free XYZ" so I know to get online or on the phone and do what I need to in the event I didn't want to keep whatever the "product" is. It's also a reminder, for when I make out my budget page each month, to include that charge on the appropriate line so I can check my credit card and see that the amount I expected was charged and I can check it off.

I personally never look to get free stuff where I have to commit to a subscription. To me it's not worth the hassle. Free stuff appeals to people who are broke, or have a mindset of scarcity. Once you're affluent, you need to reset your mind to understand that time is much more important than money. Based on your story, I think you should start making that adjustment. Doing so will make your path to affluence much faster and easier.
@Megan_Truly3 жыл бұрын
I agree that time is money, but sometimes it's easy to cancel these offers and sometimes it's not. So to me if I want the product then it's worth it. To each their own. Let's say Sarah makes $30 an hour but it took only 10 minutes to cancel her subscription or even 20 minutes. Plus maybe the 30 seconds to mark it on a calendar/set up a reminder to cancel... but the leggings are $50 leggings. It's worth it. She didn't spend over an hour. So that money she saved is money she can put into a savings account and "pay herself." Now 4 leggings x 50 = $200.00 that's a good amount to put into a savings account!
@SherryEllesson3 жыл бұрын
Your statement about "free stuff...broke or have a mindset of scarcity" sure is painting with a broad brush! I am neither broke nor do I have such a mindset - in fact, I do very well on a modest retirement income and feel blessed every day. Merchants offering free-to-try subscriptions have a business model that is working for them, and there is nothing in the way of scarcity provided we all understand that these are the rules on this particular playing field. Your comment comes off sounding haughty and rude.

I think many of the 'Millionaires Next Door' would disagree with your statements. But you are correct that time is money, so people need to be aware of where that LINE is, where the time spent does not justify the savings. Because there is a line there, and you need to be aware which side of it an offer falls on to know if it's worth it to you or not.

TL,DR everyone placing roof claims is probably why your insurance went up 20% I live in Florida and work in insurance. A big thing going on right now is roof AOB(assignment of benefits) and frivolous lawsuits for new roofs. I don’t know a lot about Texas’s insurance but down here when you sign over your rights for them to deal with the insurance company, you have no say in how it goes. Yes they will handle it, but if the claim doesn’t go through they will go to you looking for it and if you don’t have it they will put a lien on your house. The other part is if your insurance company refuses to pay they can sue the insurance company in your name so it’s on your record. Because of these two issues insurance rates in Florida went up an average of 36% in 2020 with central Florida going up around 50-100%. Im not saying you had an illegitimate claim, but when you sign over your rights to make the claim, they take a lot of extra money from the insurance company and you end up paying for it. And now there is a claim on your record.

Big caution about those cancel anytime subscriptions. If you order, say some socks on subscription, where, like you, you just pay shipping. They frequently start the "30 days" on the day you order, not the day you get your product. Keep this in mind if you want to try it out, as you may not receive the items for several weeks.

Absolutely ethical to sign up for a free or discounted offer and cancel right after. If they offer it, then they should assume some people will truly cancel at any time. I do this, do the offers a lot and cancel afterwards. Only issue was with a company called lipmonthly I followed their directions they charged me another month. I wrote in and they ignored me, I had to talk with my credit card company and I reported it as a fraudulent charge. So that was a HUGE pain in the butt and inconvenience! Hi Sarah ! Good Going Girl ! You may have already taken care of this, but do you have an umbrella insurance policy .. just in case someone who was working on one of your three properties - your apartment your tenant's apartment and now your camper gets hurt ? Just a thought (even though $2,500 may have been too much to ask of the roofing company), but moving forward whenever you have a deductible for a job to be done check to see if the company you hire will eat the deductible or a portion of it. Wins: putting multiple items back at the grocery store. Calling the bank immediately when an online purchase was declined by the bank for reasons of suspecting that the online site was fraudulent. Never had that happen before and was so glad I bank where I do! Remembered that all I have to get is a clay flower pot to make sure I can be warm if the heat goes out this winter. Fails: I haven't called the local contractor to come and finish the work that's started here. I haven't called the contractor who's been working on the place (I thought) I'm moving to. Good deal Sarah, we have to cancel those subscriptions as soon as we remember or within the allotted timeframe, just to protect our wallets--Not unethical at all. Playing by the rules. I find chat works just as well as a live phone call, alot of chat agents are superior customer service agents. I think that is fantastic you are trying to get back into derbying! What a workout! Great for you, i would think reffing is alot more gentle on the body than the actual derbying, wise choice! Hmm, did you learn what you needed to with the free law course? I am tempted to do something having to do with a will--as in a free trial. Will have to look for an offer. Thanks for the superior content, always look forward to a new video.

Hi Terri! It was actually access to pre-made contracts, not a course. I needed something specific, but not necessarily to pay $15 a month for ongoing access!

I actually keep the monthly fabletics subscription. BUT! I don’t pay for it because they give you the option to skip each month so that when I’m in need of new leggings I can actually still get the member pricing. They send emails one the 1st of the month so I just go into the email and go to my account and click skip. I’m good at checking my email daily so I’m good at remembering this every month. I don’t really find it to be unethical to cancel right after taking advantage of deals like that. I certainly shouldn’t since I keep a membership but don’t pay thanks to a loophole lol.

Well Done! I LOVE Subscriptions and again like you make sure I try to cancel but have fallen into the trap of forgetting. I don't think it's unethical to do some because they are bigger companies who can afford to do this - (smaller home based businesses I would not) - you also mentioned the company here and no doubt others will go look them up and check them out and you might even order from them again in the future if they have a sale. You gotta try before you buy as they say!

Agree! I also don't think a small business would offer this kind of loss-leader deal, simply because they couldn't afford it.

Your homeowners insurance maybe went up because you filed a claim on it. Your next insurance will see the claim as well and will charge accordingly. Insurance is definitely skewed in favor of insurers. I’ve also seen on the news that insurance went up because the value of homes has increased so much over the last two years.

I wasn't clear in the video, but it went up prior to my claim!

How cool! I looked into the phrase a couple years back when I started by merch and its not trademark-abe as its a pun on a trademarked phrase and is common enough to not be owned with a copyright. All that to say anyone is welcome to use it (i have it on a water bottle from years ago and have seen it on tees from different companies). Very cool name for a channel and I wish her the best with it!
