Our viewer Sanaa's main skin concerns were uneven skin texture and dark spots (hyperpigmentation), so she sent in her skincare routine for Susan Yara and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Annie Chiu to critique. Watch this video to see what they had to say!
Want us to review your skincare routine? Upload a video of your skincare routine to KZbin and make sure it’s UNLISTED so we can view it. It does not have to be public. We’ll also need a few pictures that show your skin without makeup on. Send the video link and pictures to skincare@mixedmakeup.com.

Thank you so much to Susan and Dr. Chiu for reviewing my skincare routine! While I’ve been interested in skincare for a bit now, I’m still learning and trying to learn what products are the best for me, so definitely simplifying my routine down to a few great products is going to be key! Thank you so much💛💛

The Ordinary has a alpha arbutin mixed with Vitamin c (L ascorbic). You could use that in the morning if you wanted to.

@Sybille J, as the ladies mentioned in the video, the product you mention from The Ordinary actually does not contain L-ascorbic acid. It also only uses ascorbic acid 8% (without the L, which was their concern) in combination 2% alpha arbutin.

Sanaa, since you’re already liking some of the ordinary’s products, you should try their moisturizer. It’s really amazing. I was skeptical because of how cheap it is, but it’s become one of my favorites (other favorite is belif’s water cream) and has HA in it as well.

For a true face sunscreen: Try the La Roche Posay Anthelios Clear Skin Dry Touch sunscreen. It's got UVA/UVB protection, and slide smoothly on; no white cast. And mostly important, its OIL-FREE. As someone who has oily skin, this has been a lifesaver. Dr Davin Lim (Derm from NZ) had mentioned it in one of his videos, and it's become a top product for me.

I use Timeless Vitamin C E + Ferulic acid. It has a pH of 3.0-3.2 and comes with a 90-day guarantee to not oxidize. I buy clean dark dropper bottles and split it in half. I use half and store the other half in the refrigerator. I don't know if it truly is "as good as" the Skinceuticals because I've never tried it, but I can't afford $166 on just one product. Now, has my skin become brighter, my skin tone more even, and the hyperpigmentation decreased, yes. I've been using it for 7 months now.

I really wish I knew these things when I started doing "skincare" at like age 13. I used the harshest astringents and stripping cleansers and roughly exfoliated multiple times per day. I'm 22 now, and thank goodness I've started understanding healthy skin habits. I have dark spots, uneven skin tone, and very dry skin, and I'm also on a college student budget lol. It makes me feel so good when you talk highly about a product I use, like The Ordinary glycolic toner! Glycolic acid is an essential for me now.
@sammkr87

In recent years I’ve definitely wondered if, for many of the teens back when I was a teen (those super drying cleansers were popular at the time), the skin issues they dealt with throughout puberty had more to do with not adopting an effective yet gentle skincare regimen combined with good habits (water temp, gentle yet thorough physical handling of skin, proper frequency of cleansing, changing pillowcases frequently). Like, maybe there was some effect due to puberty, but that alone only would only have contributed to very mild acne. By the time they reached late teens/early twenties, they might have then attributed an improvement in their skin to puberty ending (i.e. the classic getting over acne by the end of teen years) when in fact they had just become more experienced (and maybe more knowledgable) and finally figured out a good skincare regime that works for them and developed better skin maintenance habits. Anyway, I’m so glad that you are figuring out what works for you. Susan’s KZbin page and others like it, I think, are great resources that I hope more young people become aware of. We definitely didn’t have this back in the day. Good luck 👍.

One thing you can do now is wear sunscreen if you already don't! I wish I was told that sooner! No matter what products or treatment you do, if you don't wear sunscreen it will cancel out. This sun makes the hyperpigmentation worse. Also visit a dermatologist you may need a prescription strength retinol. Or hydroquinone (although this can be problematic in POC. ) I use Tretenoin (prescription retinol). I wish there was more info out there because this is much needed!

Big thank you to Sanaa for sharing her routine and to Dr. Chiu! I know some of you are big fans of Krave. I love it too! We weren’t saying the best shield is bad, but you can understand Dr. Chiu’s take on it as a dermatologist in the US. I’m sure it’s great! I hear so many wonderful reviews and I really want to try it, but it’s important to point out the regulations are different here than in Korean. And we acknowledge their testing might be better, but we don’t know.

She has some great products in her skincare. But as an Esthetician I think she’s over doing it. People think using a multitude of products equal perfect skin. I think not. All that does is increase your chances of irritation and in her case probably post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, texture and dryness from pairing ingredients that may not be effective when layered or paired together. She just needs to do a less is more approach.

Nope to any fragrances even if your skin isn't sensitive, it can develops some sensitivity on long term and you won't even know.. happened to me. Sephora has a LOTS of products with fragrances, even if it has good ingredients in it, that good point isn't enough to counter that perfumy negative point imo. Wouldn't promote fragrance at all except in a body perfume

First of all, love this series and the concept so we can get a dermatologist's view on our skincare. With the question of whether we can mix vitamin C and Niacinamide I agree that studies show they can be mixed and compliment each other. I'm surprised both Susan and Dr Chiu haven't heard of the myth that you can't mix the two. It's basically mis-information based on tests done in the 70's which are outdated now. The main fear is that combining the two can create the compound niacin which can lead to flushing of the skin but that's not the case and this process can take a long time and requires extreme amounts of heat before even a tiny amount of niacin is produced. Still in most cases, unless you're super sensitive, it won't affect your skin. I wonder if The Ordinary said their Niacinamide can't be mixed with vitamin C based on this outdated study or because of their specific formulation.🤔

Btw, I use The Ordinary's l'ascorbic acid powder- the gold standard for pure vitamin C. It's the best and cheapest form of vitamin C that nobody talks about it. It's like you're getting a fresh batch of vitamin C everyday 🥰. I mix it in with my serums in the morning before moisturiser and then sunscreen and it's amazing. I use at night too. It mixes well with everything. It's not problematic like their original formula which most people said was oily for gritty and too harsh. Try it people, it lasts for ages. It comes with a little scoop to help you measure out the powder (it dissolves very easily too). You could also use it with their resveraterol and ferulic acid serum, which is known to stabilise vitamin C.👌

@@mslori389 hi I have two that I rotate. Altruist sunscreen- it's a mineral (physical) sunscreen that's formulated by dermatologists, fragrance and paraben free AND very affordable. Its available on Amazon. Slight con is that it can settle into creases in your skin over the course of the day and have a very slight almost unnoticeable cast. I use it under makeup and it doesn't interfere with it. I also use the Ambre Solaire Ultra Hydrating sun cream, available at the drugstore. it's a synthetic (chemical) sunscreen. It doesn't leave a cast and absorbs really quickly and affordable. I use with and without makeup. Its fragranced so if you're very sensitive try Altruist. Hope that helps.

I’ve been fighting mild melasma for years and I’m spending more time and money on that than on almost anything else! I just have a good sunscreen now, and a medium cover foundation and I’m calling it quits because there are hundreds of creams that say they will fix melasma but not much happens. I might go the really deep peel route someday to wipe out these darn melanocytes, but that has cardiac effects, so it scares me. I also don’t like the sensitivity I get on my skin from retinol or too much vit. C. I’ll get a prescription for Azelaic acid from my Derm doc(also in La in Torrance). The last time he treated a big solar lentigines(age spot) under my eye, with phenol, and it just lightened a touch. The azelaic acid is not available from the Ordinary but it’s still on the Sephora website. It’s the only thing I’ve heard of actually working for melasma, from my own Derm and his staff. Btw, he is a cosmetic dermatologist only and very conservative in his approach.

I think her point was really that it’s not regulated. Also, honestly, if some of the UVA filter is not FDA approved as an SPF, it can still be tested by the FDA, as there is no real UVA rating in the US anyway, it’s only “broad spectrum”. UVB filter gives the SPF rating.
