Today news broadcast is about a train derailing in a nearby field. The driver says he saw a piece of wood on the tracks and tried to apply the brakes to slow down, but it was already too late. The driver bailed out of the cab and the train derails with both engines and few cars derailed.

Wrong, the tie can dig one end into the track structure and rip up the track under the locomotive. Also, whenever you put a train into Emergency braking you risk a derailment due to forces on the train.

A cross tie placed on the tracks like, in this video could, very well cause a derailment by at least two caused. The crosstie itself could cause it and it could tear up the track under the engine.

The real accident was on the BNSF El Paso Subdivision and the train was an autorack train (BNSF V-PHXELP4) at Vado, NM back in mid last month

Several million $$ in damage occurred. The person who put the ties on the tracks has been identified and arrested. He is being charged under Federal law with causing destruction of a train. Except that it didn't. Ties hold together really well and don't readily fall apart due to being processed with creosote and other chemicals which preserve their strength and longevity. Hence why they can be used as ties at all. In the derailment, the snowplow initially moved it out of the way, but as the train traveled over it, it flung back up and got wedged under the wheels, lifting them off the track. Trains do hit ties quite a bit because of teenage saboteurs thinking they always derail, but it's pretty rare.

Hoping you didn't derail! How about having someone break a switch lock 🔐, set your switch points so that you would enter a siding and, crash into a railroad car? It happened on the P&W way back then in RI. (The culprit was said to be a TR, young aged, around 1990. I remember the name well!) Another happened on the MassCentral RR, at their Forest Lake Junction south of Ware, MA. Likely due to some crew member forgetting to re-line the switch back to its normal position. Of the two chop nosed GP-9's the first one was destroyed and scrapped.

@@bhamrails Worse yet, how about that Amtrak derailment in Hyder, AZ, around 1995? The saboteurs knew something about a track's circuit! First, they maintained the circuit's connection so to ensure a green signal prior to the site, then, they unbolted the joint and forced the outside rail out at a small trestle! In my opinion, this was, without a doubt, an act of vengeance! It is said that a vehicle was seen in the distance departing after this derailment!
