Thanks for posting (& recording) this. Interesting to watch how another pilot operates. My personal rule-of-thumb is one mistake (forgetting to back up the server, flying too fast in a final glide) is 'normal', but more than one requires really careful consideration.

Domas, thank you for sharing. Quite scary indeed. It felt like you could have slowed down to best glide way sooner which could have saved you from outlanding. But also the decision to outland was very late and low. I'm glad you're here to share the story yourself. Not to mention how close your wingtip was from the ground on that final turn. That was dangerous. 😱

I thought that he would intercept the cloud street on his left , or perhaps it was further away than it appeared in his video. Cheers from Downunder 👍🇦🇺😷😷😷. PS every outlanding that is successful is a good landing. Every power pilot should challenge himself and gain a gliding endorsement. . Only then will he appreciate the virtue of accurate landings and realise that every landing is a forced landing when gliding as it lacks the luxury of a go-round . This can also add confidence when dealing with engine problems that may result in having to make a decision whether to carry on the flight or find a spot to land .

late in the day the best line is always the woods. Maybe a slight deviation to the left and avoiding the sink above the corn fields would have also saved you ? I think the last turn was OK because you had enough speed.

It's hard for me to judge height on these videos, so my comment may be way off base. I always have a place to land in mind. As I move along course, I pick another one. At some point, say 600 ft AGL, you need to commit to landing. Changing your mind can be a killer.

He slowed down to land. If I’m trying to make those good looking clouds at the end, would it not make sense to slow down before the clouds to maximize your glide to get to the good stuff? This seems like a risky landing that could have at least been delayed if not eliminated.
@SuperReasonable3 жыл бұрын
Quite odd. Boring along at 80 knots with no lift and good clouds in the distance. Why not stretch the glide at max L/D to make the good lift ahead?

@@gonegliding2966, last Year I've damaged undercarriage on really good airport - there was hole and was totally invisible (sinkhole?) as It took some time to find it and it was wheel size. Unfortunately, my o pro was out of juice.. Talking about this video, there are mistakes made to avoid outlanding, and mistakes made after outlanding become unavoidable, I think. I quite good know this region, because it is within few kilometers from home airport.. and there is a lot of woods if you go straight, as I am scared of woods.. I made big deviaton to right to have some field options. It was first outlanding with this glider. Thank You for Your comments! Fly safe!

Wow, that low 180° was a surprise to me. At what point did you have your field picked out and approach plan?
@MrBerzulis3 жыл бұрын
I think at about 400m I've accepted the fact that I won't land in my home airfield as I deviated to right (to go straight to airfield was scary with that height, because it goes thru woods, no place to land) to have options of airfields. My target was one of the airfields across the road because I know this area.That specific airfield I've picked at height of 50m as I saw a power lines on approach to next one and others seemed not so good.
@TheSoaringChannel3 жыл бұрын
@@MrBerzulis read your comment. In your comment you say there's nowhere to land over the woods. But on your latest one: you say there are. Where is the decision path for carrying out an outlanding? At 3000' a general area. At 2000' a specific area. At 1500' 3 fields. Fly a pattern across them to find hazards. At 1000' enter a pattern and land at one specific field.... Ok so in meters you'd be at 300m and flying a pattern. None of this happened. Please explain why you aren't giving yourself safety margins for arrival height. Screw the competition. Make the safety height yourself. I will not arrive less than 1000' at my airfield. Period. It makes it less stressful and more enjoyable, ya know. Ok, try it with 500' arrivals? Good grief. 😳

Yes, same airfield, same direction, different conditions. There is 2 years gap between videos and july vs august (airfields is changing fast), different conditions - different wind, experience, preparation. Actually, this method of heights and patterns is essential and works perfectly in unknown area - it is never a great idea to land out on a rush. But also, during gliding competition nobody does final glide with such height margin - always converting it to speed. It is not just about being undertaken - going fast means that you are going to jump all the sink fast. We are discussing subtle things and details is really matters. Cheers! Stay safe !

@@MrBerzulis This video was scary to watch, but I have had several situations which would have been scary to watch if they were filmed as well. I think back to them often, and all we can do is learn from the situations. They are, without exception, all during competition flying. It seems to be a natural thing we do to reduce margins when we are flying in competitions, which I think is important to realise and actively compensate for. I haven't had a really marginal final glide or scared myself for a while now, and I am happy about that, I have learnt from my past experiences as I am sure you have from this. That doesn't mean finishing every task at 1000' though! Suggesting you start looking for fields at 3000' is just ridiculous. You aren't flying in the alps here. We often fly on days with a 3000' cloud base! Arm chair pilots will tell you this and that, like you have said, it is very different in the moment. So is starting your pattern at 1000'. Those blanket rules mean nothing as you could be in an area where you could shut your eyes, point the glider into wind, and have landed in a suitable field when you open them. One thing I would mention is, although it is very hard to tell distances on video, you seem to stop routing and fly straight from when I assume the computer says you are on final glide. The further out I am, the more I route to energy as I would during a normal glide between climbs. My routing becomes narrower and fly more directly to the airfield as I get closer and am certain I am in. Thanks for sharing, what not to do and an explanation of the thought process which lead to the situation is helpful for all.

Do you have an audio vario? Or was that linked to your radio problems. You flew right through two sources of lift without even slowing down. Two weekends ago I flew 50km in a libelle with not a single bump of lift, the sky was blue so I flew at maximum L/D which is only 51 knots. I don't fly competition, but many now have a minimum ending height to try and avoid this situation.

Yes, one of the way to get home is to fly slower in early stage of a final glide and increase your safety altitude flying slower than your MC. But if you are low and slow - heavy sink will instantly end your day

@@carljacobs1287 don't get me wrong, this video was posted with no aim to be instructional video "how to make safe outlanding". I can see a lot tactical and executive mistakes In it. I have posted it as a DON'T. How not to get in situation like this and how not to do if You realise that you are already in a situation like this. But there is few points I can't 100 % agree to you. You are talking about reserve as a height, but energy is not a height only. It's a speed also. That's what saved me from crash. Landing gear has a secondary effect and I've extracted it late with purpose not to loose energy. The worst thing in executing this landing was sideslip that wasn't "meant to be" and with lower speed would be critical. I am always checking myself, thats why I am filming almost every take off and landing to check it after. That was first outlanding with this type of glider in my life. And in fields near my airfield. After this outlanding I've made few hundreds of flight hours, dozen or more outlandings and my safety margin of height is definitely higher, manoeuvres are more coordinated.
