Interesting comparison, when I joined the Army, I was told where my first posting was going to be and that it was for 2 years. I made plans accordingly. Just before I went, I was then told it was going to be just 6 months. At the end of that headed off to posting number 2, for 2 years, apparently. Deployed 5 months in, for 6 months, and total time in the posting ended up being just 14 months. Off I headed to job number 3, after having completed training only 2 years and a few months earlier. Job 3 was 12 months, job 4 was 6 months, then I was told Job 5 was going to be in another new location, but the job was the same as I had already done in posting 2. In the meantime, could I go back to job 3, for 2 months to help out as they were short staffed. My stuff had been in storage for 8 months by this time, literally living with what I could fit in my car. Finally got confirmation of Job 5, which had changed again, supposedly for 2 years. No surprise, I was on the move again after 1 year and 8 months, during which I did 2 residential courses, one for 2 months, the other for 3 months, in a different country from where I was based. My final job, (Job 6), this started after having served 6 years, despite the Army's target of averaging posting durations of 2-3 years, was 2 years and I extended to 3, because I put my papers in and left them with no option but to leave me where I was. To add, I put my papers in because I was given 2 weeks notice to pack up a 2 bedroom house, and move to another country to start another new job, which was the final straw. At the seniority I had by that time, this was totally unacceptable. Similar to what you describe, each move entailed upending every aspect of your life, location, friends, colleagues, and often moving to another country (I managed 3 countries I was posted to, and another 3 countries including deployments and training) over the course of 9 years by the end of it all. It is a lifestyle that doesn't suit everyone. You certainly can't put any roots down, and as for holding down a relationship, impossible. Do it whilst you're young, but definitely have an exit strategy when you want different things out of life.

Hey Lucy, good information! I noticed you said "hoover" for vacuum. Is that a British thing to say? Growing up (in America), my mom used to used that same term even if it wasn't the brand name of the vacuum cleaner. Also, cute blouse!

Well, it's not the cruise line that she (and many others) work for directly, rather it is a company that contracts to the cruise lines to run various operations and staff. Such as starboard and harding running the shops on-board, and steiner running the on-board spas. So yes, while it isn't common, they can transfer you from one ship / one line, to another, in order to fill a staff position if necessary. So, no a royal ship isn't going to transfer their own personnel to a carnival ship (such as p&o), but the independent companies that staff various operations can. I hope this helps clarify? 😀
