In Zimbabwe, FAO has been implementing a four year EU funded project to improve food and nutrition security of vulnerable rural communities through participatory sustainable forest management and value addition to forest products. Part of the project includes assisting the government of Zimbabwe in the formulation of a comprehensive forest policy.
The video tells the story of John Masangu who is a communal lands farmer from the Mutasa region of Manicaland, Zimbabwe. John is part of the forest FORCES out-grower program. Close to his homestead is a tree plantation nursery which is the source of seedlings for both the forests and his communities’ commercial eucalyptus plantations. From this education John has planted over 2000 eucalyptus trees among other varieties just under a period of 2 years. Like most communal farmers around Zimbabwe, John is part of a development trust in this case- the Mutasa Agricultural Development (MADA) trust which was formed with the help of the Forest FORCES project.
Through this association farmers collectively sell timber to Manica Boards and Doors, one of the biggest timber consumer and manufacturing plant in the country. Apart from the market linkages, FAO has supported them with startup implements such as fencing materials, polythene bags and nursery sheds. Their interests were further supported by participating in the formulation of a national forest policy.
This video shows how the Forest FORCES project has been key in promoting agroforestry where trees and crops are intercropped to create a productive, profitable, ecologically sound and sustainable land use system and livelihoods to communities.
